Joanna Good's first paragraph is absolutely correct. I am a hairstylist and it doesn't harm you or the baby as long as your not breathing in the fumes!

Do it!
The risks are minimal --- there is a higher risk if you use shower cleaner! LOL
If it makes you feelbetter then do it --- I researched it thoroughly and have since done it through all my pregnancies and am currently 36weeks with a strong healthy bub!

As long as you are in a well-ventilated area there shouldn't be a problem... the chemicals in the dye don't penetrate your skin so they aren't harmful, but the fumes could bother you if you are in a small enclosed room for too long dying your hair. They also say to be warned: pregnant hair doesn't react to dye the same way unpregnant hair does. Sometimes the colors don't turn out the same just due to different hormones.

I've dyed my hair with all 3 pregnancies and haven't had any problems though. But also, I saw henna hairdye mentioned... it's totally safe, but I just talked to a friend today who dyed her hair with henna dye while pregnant, and now can't dye her hair with regular dye. Something to do with henna coating the entire shaft and making it impossible to dye over. Sot hat's something to think about if you want to redye it in the future.

I dye my hair too but I've been trying to keep it to only once a trimester. There is a small risk that it could get absorbed by your scalp and get into your blood stream. But there is absolutely no way that I could go almost a whole year without dying my hair!!!

I have dyed my hair several times while being prego nothing has happened....its best in a well ventilated area just like if you were cleaning with chemicals the only thing that I have heard that would keep me from doing it is that with all the hormones that are going through your body your hair may take differently to the color....i did hear that bleaching is a no no...just cuz the smell is so bad for you!

They advise as long as your hair dye does not contain ammonia, IN THEORY it is safe. That said however, there is no concrete evidence that hair dye will or will not harm your baby. Also, hair dye doesn't take as well to hair of pregnant women.
Personally, it's 9 months. And it's no different to alcohol or smoking... I want my baby to have the best possible start in life and if that means foregoing a few things for 9 months than so be it... It's not the rest of your life. And if, God forbid, a chemical did harm your baby, would it be worth it to have nice looking hair?

my doc. said that i could dye my hair.... id jus recommend getting it done at a salon cuz its open area and the dye isnt going directly on ur scalp, & pry not as harsh chemicals

I researched it while I was pregnant with both my kids. There isn't anything that says it will harm the baby but it's not especially good for the baby. Best to stay away from it was the best advice I found. I agree with it. I wanted to dye my hair while I was pregnant so bad but since it's not 100% proven that it won't harm the baby, I decided that the health of my child is more important than my own vanity. Your hair can wait!!

I refused to color my hair when I was pregnant. I had pretty light roots and black hair. But I didn't care. It's not about me anymore, it's about my son. There is no proof that it does or does not harm a baby, but I am not willing to risk my childs health over something so stupid. Just because children born to mothers that colored their hair ''seem fine'' doesn't mean that it doesn't cause problems for them in the future. A chemical is a chemical. It is ultimately your choice, but the pregnancy really isn't that long. I would wait it out.

I dyed my hair when I was pregnant with my 1rst child and I was told to wait until you are out of the first trimester because that's where 99% of birth defect happen...I plan on dying my hair with this pregnancy but later on :D I'm 13 1/2 weeks now

i have dyed my hair in all my pregnancies...i spoke to my midwife and she assured me that there is no risk to the baby. hope it helps

I did it and my son is normal... just make sure it is ventilated and if you start to feel sick from the chemicals obviously wash it out or get some fresh air. Studies show now that it really doesnt effect the baby whatsoever and is safe to do while pregnant.
