How accurate are dates from ultrasounds?

I got my first ultrasound and the fetal measurments put me at about 17 weeks and the were able to tell it is a boy. The only problem is i was sure i was 14 weeks at the time of the ultrasound. I knew there was a possibility that i was 16 weeks at the ultrasound but that would mean a change in the paternity situation. Now im unsure about the time of conception and i dont know if i should believe the date they gave me. Is it possible my baby is just really developed for his fetal age?

The earlier the ultrasound, the more accurate it is.
But even so, I have always heard that you can expect 2 weeks leeway on either side of the date that you're given (so according to your due date, 38-42 weeks). It's doubtful that there would be a 3 week difference (that's a pretty big deal that early in pregnancy), so chances are, you are pregnant by the earlier guy (you thought you might be 16 weeks)
