I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with my first child and I have been self medicating with methadone for 2 years now because I lost my insurance and didnt wnt to go to a clinic. I didnt realize I was pregnant until I was 16 weeks when I had to go to the er for something else. I am awaiting medicaid to go through, they say any day now but I am terrified that when I go to the doctor if I tell them I take methadone I will forever be in the system. I am afraid that they will take my baby. I don't want to do anything to hurt my baby, and a friend told me that my best choice is to wean myself off before I give birth. I have myself down to between 5-10 mgs a day. Should I go to a regular doctor and get regulated by them or a treatment center. help, and pleae dont judge me

I am a nurse and have worked with babies of mothers on Methadone. Your doctor will figure it out either through drug testing or when the baby is born. The best thing you can do is be upfront and honest (even though this is scary to do). It has been my experience (and I can't speak for every state/facility), that when you are honest, you get to keep your baby, as long as you are doing everything you can to get clean and provide adequately for your child. Generally speaking I have seen moms referred to social work who assisted them with getting state insurance and then getting them set up in a clinic that could slowly wean them during their pregnancy (some even continue after the pregnancy). The baby then usually stays in the hospital a little bit longer than you do because they need very close monitoring for withdrawal symptoms. Then, as long as you are found to be continuing the treatment recommended by the physicians and NOT self-medicating or using, you'll be able to take your child home with you. Social services will continue to follow for a certain period of time (I think it's babies first year), but mostly just to check in and be a resource for services and help that you may need.

I know the system can be a scary place. I was there when I was young. But, just find someone you trust, and do the right thing. Secrets will get you no where.

Good luck and congrats on the baby and your recovery!!!

It's better to get help now. They do blood testing on you in the hospital. If Its not a prescribed drug to you, than it is considered harm to the baby. I'm not 100% but I don't think any doctor will allow you to take It while pregnant. I'm sure there are other medications they can give you instead of you self medicating. I know that methadone is extremely addictive and withdrawals are horrible! If you do continue on with the medication, just think about what Your precious baby is going to have to go through once the methadone has left his/her system.

Have you gotten any prenatal care? You have to be honest with your doctor.

Good look with everything!
