Losing weight during pregnancy?

I started out, pre-pregnancy, at 215 lbs. I have never been flabby or obese, but a large girl all the same. Now, at almost 21 weeks, I am down to 190 lbs. My baby is growing at a good pace, and is a little larger than normal, according to my doctor. However, I am still scared that my inability to gain weight is going to cause some problems later. Is anyone else having this problem, or did you have this problem?

Don't worry about the weight gain or loss. I lost 25 lbs during my 1st 4 months with he my first pregnancy and ultimately ended up gaining it all back + another 60 lbs during the last 5 months.
This time around, I started at 200 lbs (overweight for me) and after 16 1/2 weeks, I weigh 190. The Dr said the baby is growing just fine, measuring at +/- 2 days from it's gestatinoal age. She just tells me to keep eating healthfully.

Not at all! If you are underweight than it's bed, but if you are considered overweight or obese then they say gain the minimum, and some dr's say to loose weight! As long as you are eating good, that's all that matters. The baby will get what it needs from you regardless of what you eat etc.

Also, I'm 5'8 and started out at about 175, I'm considered overweight and told I shouldn't gain more than 20 lb.

With my first pregnancy I lost 10 lb then from 21 months to when I delivered I gained 40 lb, putting me at 30 above original weight. So you may start to gain weight in the last half.

So glad I'm not the only one....start at 180 and then lost 20lbs.....gained 10lbs back but can hardly hang on to it...lol But my doctor is not concerned with it so....I guess I be happy as long as my baby is healthy and happy.

I think while it's not really 'the norm', it isnt actually a problem to lose weight while pregnant.
Doctors say you shouldn't go out of your way to lose weight, but i think if it's just happening without any real efforts on your part then there is no need to be worried.
I lost weight at the start of my pregnancy, I have actually put on 6kg (i am 40 weeks), but apparently the normal weight gain should be about 12kg so i'v actually lost about 6kg in personal weight.
In my case i would say giving up drinking had a HUGE effect on my weight. I was drinking quite a lot before i knew i was pregnant (broke up with my boyfriend of 4 years) but havent had a drop since i knew i was having a baby.

so yeh, probably just that you are a eating for your baby as well, which doesnt mean eating more, it means eating better and being more conscious of what you need and dont need to be putting in your body :)

good luck with your pregnancy! :D

I lost 16lbs with my daughter and so far have lost about 5 with my lil boy (due in June).. being larger, my doctor was never concerned with the weight loss. It's not even from morning sickness, just that I eat a little healthier when pregnant and I seem to get a lil more exercise in when expecting. My daughter was a healthy 6lbs 7oz and my lil boy is growing right on track :) If your dr. or midwife isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either! Consider it a blessing! And it gives you a nice lil bragging right ;)

According to my doctor I'm 27.5 weeks since I began going to the doctor in October I've lost 40 lbs gained back 5 lost another 3 they measure the baby and the size matches up to what the gestational date says +2 days I'm eating normally I'm drinking normally I started this pregnancy at 344.6 lbs I had hit 350 a few months before and started dieting and metabolism boosting when I began getting the feeling I was pregnant I quit the diet foods went back to normal foods and normal drinks I'd lost 5.4 lbs in a week and it heald there for 3 weeks I found out I was pregnant (4 weeks) since then I spent the better part of my first trimester ill and unable to keep much down so there went 25 lbs but doctor assured me it was ok baby is developing great since the second trimester began I've gone back to normal and still another 15 lbs gone... I don't get it
While pregnant with my son I gained 90+ with my daughter I gained 40 now with this one I wonder if she will cause me to loose the whole time
I'll admit I'm not at the healthier of the weights I've been at in my life but I don't want to loose the weight if it's going to harm my child

I am currently 22 weeks pregnant with my 5th child. With every single one of my children I never gained an ounce. i lost at least 25 lbs with each of them. For the 3rd and 4th children both girls I started at about 185 and ended at about 170 right before i had them and of course i went down further when they came but i have been the same weight now with this baby boy and i have not gained nor lost anything at this point. Still 18 more weeks to go. Wish me luck. and no i have no scientific explanation as to how i lose weight when I'm pregnant I'm just one of the lucky few i guess. Or I just dont really feel like eating durng pregnancy (which i do not advise) i just always feel like im full. (full of baby) :)

im 38 weeks pregnant and my weight has been up and down like a yo-yo, ive been quite sick throughout my pregnancy, one week ive gained weight, the next ive lost it, my doctor says baby is the length and weight he should be, but is concerned for my well being, hes judging me by canadian womens pregnancys, im from the uk, and this is my 6th baby, and i had all this with my last pregnancy, she was born at 7 pounds 9 ounces and my biggest baby so far, im not worried as im a hell of a lot bigger with this baby, im huge! lol, and i know ill be able to eat everything once hes here and start gaining my weight back to my usual self, best of luck with your pregnancy hon and dont let the docs scare you with there statistics, every woman is different

im not a larger girl,i was 115 bls. before i got pregnant, but it i lost about 15 pounds before i found out i was pregnant, then all of the sudden i started gaining it all back.after a few weeks i gain all of it back plus some, and that's when i started thinking something was going on.
losing weight isn't uncommon or bad as long as you gain some(if not all) of it back.

I lost weight with both my second child and in my current pregnancy. My metabolism sped up and burned off extra calories. I worried too when I had reached 3rd trimester and hadn't gained any weight. Now that I am in my 3rd trimester my husband and oldest son have resorted to healthy ice cream milk shakes a couple days a week to help boost my weight through the final stretch.

when i got pregnant i was 250 lbs. i was so scared about gaining weight cause i had just lost 30 lbs never had bad health and always had a positive esteem just i figured it will be healthier in the long run to lose weight.

i was told as far as crash dieting i should not do. but if im not hungry its ok not to eat as long as im not feeling sick from not eating. but to make sure to get plenty of fluids. that i should stay away from dieting meal replacements and its great just to eat healthier and in smaller amoutns being pregnant. i was able to keep that up till i hit the end up my pregnancy, about 30 wks when i gained from then to now 50 lbs. im due in a week and now im looking forward to the heighten metabolism after birth cause your hormones are all messed up and with effort it will be easier to lose weight. so naturally im discouraged for now but i feel id be a much better example for my child if i got to a healthier weight.

my doc has told me its no longer medically NESSESARY to gain the 30 -40 lbs but some are inevitable to gain it anyways and some dont gain at all. so if you dont gain dont worry there is no need to. she told me with the advancements made in the last couple years there is alot of new research that is proving old methods to be very outdated and unneeded.

**not to mention you can burn up to 500 cals or more breastfeeding a day sometimes more depending on often your baby feeds.

With my 1st I didn't gain any weight. I am a big girl. I ate so well & looked after myself. When I gave birth I had lost about 8kg. So it seemed to me that I was losing & bub was gaining. I am now 20wks with #2 and so far haven't gained any extra weight. I haven't been as good with my food as it's hard with a 16 month old, but I was told by Obst not to gain any if I can help it, so fingers crossed.

I didn't start gaining weight with my pregnancy until around 6 months. I actually lost almost 10 pounds before that and the dr was concerned but I ended up gaining about 20 pounds after that point and after one month after delivery I had lost 35 pounds. At this point, 5 months out, I've lost 42 lbs and holding steady, but I credit a lot of that to breastfeeding. I would definitely recommend it!

With my son I gained alot! But im now on my second and was scared cause i was always told you get bigger faster with the second baby, and in my case that was false.. I lost around 15 pounds and finally at around 6 months i started gaining..I am now almost 7 months and have only actually gained 10 pounds, but my dr said everything was great.. he even did a sono to reassure me that she was growing good. I think every pregnancy is just different and you never know what to expect, but as long as your dr is not worrying you definately should not stress yourself!! :) Good luck

Hi! It is ok to lose weight if you eat right. If you eat good things your baby will get all what it needs. Don`t worry about that. Have a nice pregnancy!

As long as your doctor isnt concerned you shouldnt be either. Over my whole pregnancy I have lost almost 20 lbs. I had to go buy a different size regular pant before I bought maternity pants!! When you are pregnant you are eating healthier and that is what is causing you to loose the weight.

Just becareful that when you come to the last trimester you continue to make the same good choices. My doctor told me that the end is when a lot of women gain a lot of weight, it becomes harder and more uncomfortable to move and you have less energy. Just keep up with what you are eating and go for a short walk everyday. I go for about 20 min everyday, and thats it.

I started to loose weight as well. What I found out was that if you are over whatever it is to be considered a "normal wiehgt" for your height, then you only really need to gain 15-20 lbs. As well as long as you do not loose I think it is over 10% of your body fat than you should be ok. Just keep track of it, and maybe do some extra research and talking with your dr. Take care.

It is not at all uncommon for us "larger " gals to actually safely lose weight while pregnant . What matters is your uterus is growing correctly and everything is fine with the baby . We tend to take better care of ourselves while pregnant which can be part of why . As long as your doctor keeps telling you everything with the baby is where it should be things should be just fine .

ALSO ... If you have had bad bouts with morning sickness this can be part of the cause .

I always tend to lose weight and gain a small bit just before having my kids . Usually I am less mobile by then and just tired !
