Pregnant and sick

Please help. I am 18 weeks pregnant and I have come down with a terrible dry cough that turns into a bark and once I start coughing I can't stop, it’s painful and my whole body is sore from the coughing. I am also not sleeping because I can't stop coughing so I am up most of the night. The Dr has put me on antibiotics. The nights and early mornings are the worst. What can I take or to ease the pain in my throat that won't harm the baby? Any suggestions out there?

Hey Nikki.

I was sick in the last week of my pregnancy and man it sucked!!
To help ease the cough make sure your bedroom is nice and warm, if its cold it will make it a whole lot worse. Have you ever noticed when your outside in the cold you cough or get a runny nose?
There is a tablet here (dont know if you have it where you are) and its called 'Sudafed' and its a temporary relief from all cold and flu symptoms, you take two pills a day and it makes you feel a bit better until you get better. Maybe go to your pharmacy and see if they have anything similar?
I hope you get better soon!

You poor thing! As if being pregnant doesn't wear on you enough, right? :) My doc said that Robitussin is the best thing to use for a cough while you're pregnant. I would do some research on the antibiotic you're taking though because some medicines will actually counteract it if you take it at the same time. And I definitely agree with Heidi on the Vicks VapoRub. That stuff works miracles for me. I hope you get over this quickly and congrats on the baby! ♥

I have really bad asthma and the drs won't let me use my inhaler. When my throat gets really rough from coughing (or saluting the porcelain prince) decaf hot tea with lemon really helps me. My drs also say the menthol rub like Vick's is okay to use too. I would double check with your doctor though, because mine is not so reliable. Hopefully the new OB will be better. And hopefully you'll feel better soon.

I had a cold around that same time and I was told to use Tylenol but that didn't help at all. In the morning I would drink a cup of tea and the rest of the day I would only drink water. Also soup helped me alot. If you need help to breathe easier then I would reccomend rubbing some Vicks on your chest. Cough drops are also helpful but use it as recommended.

Halls, Tylenol, and Isotonic Saline Salution if you have a stuffy nose at some point (it'll clear your sinuses). This was all I could take when I got a nasty cold/cough :( I was much father in than you are now though (37 weeks). Drink a lot of water and get plenty of rest! This worked for me :) Took a week, but now I'm better again.
