X-Rays during pregnancy

So I have an infection in my mouth. They have to do an x-ray and I know that is not allowed during pregnancy. My doctor sent a release for me to have one but I was wondering if anyone else has ever had one during pregnancy. What is the harm of one and what precautions should I be taking? I know it will probably be fine since my doctor is allowing it but I am still nervous bc of all the "dangers" I have heard of from x-rays. I am 27 weeks.

You should be ok, just make sure they take the least amount possible. I'm actually in chiropractic school and I'm taking x-ray physics now. The most devastating time to have x-rays taken is when the fetus is 2-8weeks due to development of the brain, nervous system and other organs. However, I'm not saying go ahead and have a full body set of x-rays. You should still be very careful by making sure they give you the most amount of protection possible! I had x-rays of my mouth (due to a necessary root canal) when I was 20 weeks. They only took 2 shots of the tooth they needed and I was wearing 2 leaded gowns for radiation protection!

x-rays shouldn't be taken, however dental ones are typically "ok". your dentist will know your pregnant and make sure that you have all the extra padding to protect the baby. Many women have dental x-rays during pregnancy and are just fine. Typically they prefer to do those in the second or early third trimester.

Also, they say that if you have infenction in the mouth that could cause issues if not taken care of as well, so the x-ray may even be better than trying to wait for the baby to be born to fix it. Many health plans even allow pregnant women to have an extra visit because good dental health is important to a healthy pregnancy.

Good luck!

I had to have chest xrays done during my first pregnancy as i am a severe asthmatic and had lots of problems with it during my preg. I was concerned about it but was reassured that the baby would be safe as they covered my belly in a big heavy lead apron and i was in my second then third trimester. There where no problems with my baby at all. So i would say your bub will be safe but definately express your concerns before having it done. All the best :)

I have had to have an xray during my pregnancy. My doctor assured me that as long as it isnt in the vicinity of the baby it will be ok. I had an xray of my chest and they put a lead belt around my waist to stop any radiation getting to the baby. My doctor told me that if it was going to harm my baby they wouldnt do it.

I broke my ankle when i was 37 weeks pregnant with my daughter and needed and xray to obviously see if it was broken. She is fine and a happy healthy 4 yr old so i assume it should be fine as its not any where near the baby!

they use substantially less radiation these days than even 5 years ago. but, you can have them use a second sheild if you like.

You will be fine!! And so will your baby!! I had dental x-rays at about 20 weeks with my previous pregnancy for a neccessary root canal also and they will make sure baby is covered and taken care of.
