D.A.R.E. emergency Cards

I was recently at the mall and came across D.A.R.E. selling emergency ( id.) cards for children. The cardswill come twice a year until the child is 5, you send a picture and height, weight information and everything needed for an Amber alert is included on the card. On the back is the health card number and emergency contact information. .... You also finger print and collect hair for DNA...

Has anyone else heard of these?

Bought one? ...

Is it a good idea?

If you don't want to pay the price of the cards (i met a seller trying to convince us to buy four cards for each child)

Make your own card, all you pay for making on at home is the ink and paper you print it on. just put down all the information that you  would have put down on their card and keep a really good quality picture of your child (you can update the pic any time you want) and keep all of that where you can get to it quickly.

You can even get your childs finger prints as well, you can get some stamp ink that is non-toxic and have fun. if you really want to be adventurous get a tiny baggy and find a hair of hers with a root on it and without too much fiddling with you can save the hairs for her DNA.

If you want something she can wear you can get a cheap bracelet that looks like a medic alert one and just get her info (her first name and your phone number or whichever you want to add on it) engraved onto it.

The best thing to do if you have more than one child, if you make your own ID cards, is to write on the back where all their birthmarks are or any other unusual markings and also your childs quirks (say if your child is extremely shy or the opposite) this way your not scrambling to remember where all those cute birthmarks are while your in panic mode.

I think an ID bracelet for your young one may be the best idea....along with the card that way if baby gets lost they can identify her and if you lose baby you have an easy way to describe her. Awesome!
