What to feed 1 year old who doesn't have any teeth?

My son just turned 1 last week, and he doesn't have any teeth. He is still on stage 2 foods because he gags everytime we try to give him stage 3. He does eat yogurt, but that is going to get old real quickly. I would like to expand his variety of foods but I am not sure what other foods to try with him. Any suggestions.

I'd gag too, have you tasted jar/can baby food!



Teeth don't really matter at this stage. Anything you can crush between your fingers is a good rule. They can really bite those little gums hard.



Sweet Potato and pumpkin and potato are really good first solids, cut into dice sized pieces and steamed. Little pieces of banana, or I use canned pear cut into dice because at the moment they are out of season and a bit hard, nectarine or peach. Tiny pieces of wholemeal bread with peanut butter or cream cheese on both sides, again dice size. Well cooked macaroni is a good size for little fingers and mouths. Grated cheese. Little cubes of avocado. You can puree veges and stir macaroni or spirals through it so he gets more nutrition. I use wholemeal pasta, it's much more nutritious.



I put one bit on Charlotte's tray at a time, so she's not overwhelmed, until she learned how much she can put in her mouth at a time without gagging.



Don't worry about gagging, it is important that they learn by gagging, how much to chew something before swallowing, etc. Just watch carefully and smile and say good boy, good boy, num num num. There is a difference between gagging and choking and the difference is gagging is noisy and coughing and chewing again, choking is quiet and panicy and lasts more than a couple of seconds. That requires first aid. Gagging on the other hand requires encouragement, so they don't get scared, and they try again. You wouldn't stop him trying to walk just because he falls over.



This is as much about your attitude as it is about him. I eat all my meals with Charlotte, she usually eats what I'm eating, but smaller pieces. Like today we had scrambled eggs and cream cheese on toast, and a nectarine. She ate the mushroom pieces, and the egg, and the toast and cheese in little pieces, and the fruit in little pieces, and a drink of water. She only has her four front teeth, which offer little help for chewing. I also find it more peaceful if I'm eating too, and not focusing all my attention on Charlotte eating.



Lunch will be little tortelinnis and some cheese pieces, and some peeled, seeded tomato. I might make a risotto tonight and she'll have that with us, with mushrooms and brocolli (she loves that, it's one of her faves)



I just try to think at least A Protien, A Carb and Something that grows out of the ground for each meal. There are heaps of baby nutrition sites and books you can check out, they are really empowering.



Steer away from deep fried foods and foods with added sugar. Fruit and yoghurt have enough sugar for a kid, without pushing extra sugar through their immature digestive systems. Same goes for the fat and salt. These first few years their fat cells are set up for the rest of their lives, don't set them up for the many physical and psychological problems of being over their healthy weight.



I have also put myself on the Charlotte diet: if I wouldn't feed it to Charlotte, should I feed it to myself?

Those gums are really hard! he could probably eat almost anything you wanted to give him at this point. I think all babes go through a gagging stage (both of mine have) where they are getting used to the feeling of chunky foods. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong. Try giving soft, slimy things that are easy to gag up, like banana, avocado, sweet potato, melon, cheese, etc to get him used to the feeling of chewing and then you could probably move onto harder stuff. Fruits, veggies, toast...

puree stuff is always good. Mash potatos, yogurt, apple sauce. With meet just chop it up in a mini chopper, thats all I did before my little guy had teeth now he is 13 months and has 12 teeth..lol With the meet try adding soup stock too it so its not dry. Its kind of hard when they have no teeth. I would stay away from the jared baby food in the stores, its loaded with salt and sugars, except for beach nut I know superstore sells it. It all depends where you live. With my son I gave him whatever my husband and I ate. Just chop it up and or puree it till the little guy gets some teeth.

Im in the same boat as you - my son is 1 with only two bottom teeth.

Here's what I came up with:
- A Baby yogurt (put ground up bits of arrowroot bikkies in if you like cause they go mushy)
- One mushy wheet-a-bix with milk
- arrowroot biscuits (good for teething)
- Those whispy looking long baby rice rusks
- buttered vegemite sandwich cut into four bits, no crust (he wont eat smooth peanut butter but I'm still trying)
- Those tins of fruit in juice that you can get. Well they're already cut up :) I just strain the juice out and give him the fruit
- Some how he can eat those tiny tinned corn pieces
- My babys weird and likes sucking on tiny bits of red and spring onion!
- Those pre-sliced fresh mushrooms, quartered after a minute of boiling
- finger sized pieces ripped off of a fresh cooked chook from woolies

These are just some easy ideas I've had.

I'm not a cook as you can tell ROTFL

My #1 recomendation is avocado. You could try tiny peices if he's picking food up by him self, or you could easily smash it up. Its VERY soft when its ripened (you have to make sure its ripe!) and its packed with every vitamin and mineral you could think of, PLUS it has alot of good fat in it, like the omega 3s and unsaturated fats. Bananas are also very good. My daughter also likes asparagus because she can hold it herself and suck on it :)

My Daughter Still Loves Homemade Applesauce...Macaroni and Cheese, Mashed Potato's, Any Veggie, Just Make Sure It Is Steamed Very Well.
Crackers Will Work Too.

honestly you should start trying regular adult food that is soft and in small pieces. My daughter has been eating adult food since 8 months old and did not get any teeth until 11 months old. I just gave her small pieces like a pea at first then started more variety. She now eats chicken nuggets and stuff with no issues. Regardless of teeth they are still able to chew I just recommend start out with food that is easy to dissolve in their mouth like baby puffs.. good luck

sandwiches like pbj's are good..they can gum those or mashed potates french fries whole green beans like you would eat..ravioli spagetti..just stuff thats soft
