At what age should I start homeschooling my child?

My son is 3 and since he was born I have seriously thought about homeschooling him for many reasons. He loves art and is very creative and he loves for me to read to him and tries himself.
I have not really got on him about sounding out etc. I have not even gotten firm on teaching him letters and numbers though he does know most of them. By firm I mean sitting down every single day showing him flash cards. I do go over it with him when I drive, when he is in the tub etc.

Any tips for a beginner over here?

I see your post is a little old, but thought I'd throw out some thoughts in case you are still looking for advice. I highly recommend you spend some time learning about early childhood education and homeschooling philosophies (like Classical method, Charlotte Mason, etc.). We never did flash cards with our oldest (now 6) and he has learned his letters, learned to read, and is already advancing in math to cover multiplication, division and fractions. Sometimes NOT doing formal learning until age 6 or 7 actually increases the creativity and fosters a strong desire for learning! I've been amazed at our son's progress in the few months we finally started "formal" (planned with a curriculum) homeschooling.

i started with my son around 2 1/2 (he is nearly 3 1/2 now). in my opinion homeschooling at this age is about play. I have a blog that I try to use as a journal to chronicle our progress, but I haven't been the best about posting regularly. Even our "school days" arent totally regular because I'm still learning what best suits his learning. it sounds to me like you are on the right track with him and could start with some more structured activities, but don't stress them too much yet. At this age just about everything the kids do is a learning experience.
