We did The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I focused on the cake because you can take a pic of that and then in the future your kid will know you cared. Ahaha. That's my theory anyways. Most other things were pretty simple. We just had her "friends" over and had a BBQ with the foods from the book.

This is my cake:

She had the sunshine one for smashing. Went over very well.

My only advice is to keep it fairly simple. You don't want her cranky due to being overstimulated.

My son's birthday was in August, so we just spent some time outside with the family and let him splash around in his kiddie pool. Then we went in and opened gifts (we gave him his gifts from us the day before, so that he wouldn't get overwhelmed with too many presents). Then supper and cake. I put up a few streamers and balloons, but didn't go nuts. It worked out really well, we all enjoyed the day, and neither I nor my son were overtired and grumpy. :)

My daughter's favorite toy was a crinkly butterfly...so we had a butterfly theme. My sister made a cute cake in the shape of a butterfly. For decorations I just bought bright solid colored plastic table clothes and balloons. I'm sure if I wanted to I could have found some awesome butterfly crafts online...but I'm okay with balloons for decorations. We held the party at my church because they have a playground and water slide to keep the kids busy. The other reason we had it there is because they have a large indoor space we could use in case of rain (our home at the time was very small). My husband did burgers on the grill. We were all exhausted at the end of the day. We had fun, but I think it was a bit much. Her second and third birthdays were a bit smaller and simpler. This year we did invitations on facebook and ordered pizza. It was perfect.

Jenn, I would never purposely do a smash cake either. I don't like big messes, so if I can avoid them, I will lol.

OK - that caterpillar cake is cute! I reread what I put and I hope I didn't sound bitchy like I was saying that you shouldn't have a party - I just don't go all out like a lot of people do. I also don't do a smash cake - seems so wasteful to me. Maybe I'm just too damn cheap LMAO!

My kids' first birthday parties were small family get-togethers at my house. I personally don't see the point in going all out for a baby - they don't know the difference and big parties are just overwhelming for them.

I agree with Krista. Try to keep it simple. She will probably be tired after an hour and a half to two hours. I also probably wouldn't go overboard with the guest list. Family and a few friends (if she has any).

I love party-planning! I have boys, so don't have a lot of great party ideas for little girls, but I think a cupcake party would be a cute idea.
We're doing a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse party for Zach's second birthday. It's pretty easy to do and he loves Mickey Mouse. Goes around all day asking for "Batchy Bouse" We have a bounce house that we'll blow up, I'm going to make their little wading pool into Mickey Lake and have them fish for "gooey fish," and do some sort of simple scavenger hunt. And I'm going to attempt to make a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake and maybe some cupcakes with Mickey ears on them.
I've been looking at this website: www.catchmyparty.com which has some amazing party ideas - lots of photos. Amazing Moms also has some great ideas for first birthday parties.
