I know a parent who offered to pay for their gay son to have this kind of therapy and now wonder why he doesn't speak to them.

If someone is unhappy with who they are for whatever reason they should have the opportunity to speak to a counsellor about it. However the motive of the counsellor should be to get the patient to be happy with themselves, not to get them to conform to a lifestyle the counsellor thinks is acceptable.
