How disgusting is this one - it made me cry for the poor little boy. And only up to 3 years in jail.

Mum let son believe he was ill for $260k

A British woman tricked her son into believing he was dangerously ill for six years so she could receive disability benefits.

The 35-year-old, who has pleaded guilty to perverting justice and child cruelty, told the boy's doctors and his dad he had a mystery condition since birth, the UK's The Sun newspaper reports.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, convinced doctors to insert a feeding tube inside her son because of a supposed allergy he had to all food.

She also claimed he had cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis and a throat condition called dysphagia.

The woman, branded the sickest mum in Britain by the UK press, sent her son to school in a wheelchair with oxygen supplies.

She dressed him in over-sized clothes so he appeared ill and told people he could not swallow any food.

The boy, who is now eight years old and living with foster parents, believed he was seriously sick.

He is said to be suffering psychological problems.

The boy's "illness" meant his mother was able to claim a disability living allowance which police allege she used to maintain a "high-flying" lifestyle.

The woman was paid $260,000 during the six-year ruse.

In a TV interview the mother tearfully explained the boy would need to be fed through a tube for the rest of his life.

"It was so hard to think that he'd never eat," she said.

"He'd see his sister tucking into chocolate and ask, 'Can I have some?'"

Police say the deception began after the boy's birth when he was treated in a special care baby unit.

She continued to report the boy as ill and he spent at least six weeks a year in hospital.

But the mother, who sometimes dressed as a nurse, managed to miss appointments that would prove he was healthy.

"The boy went around with a rucksack and a trolley which had a pump in it to control his feeding," Detective Constable Mark Uren was quoted by The Sun as saying.

"His school spent thousands adapting the building to cater for the wheelchair."

When a hospital appointment threatened to expose her scam she told police she had been raped in order to postpone the visit.

It was only when police were preparing to arrest a suspect over the rape that she admitted she had lied.

The woman has pleaded guilty to perverting justice and child cruelty and is facing up to three years jail.

Poor kids.

There was a TV show a few years ago that aired. It was a "Law and Order" show. The jist was a Mom claimed her daughter had cancer. And the kid was sick, but not from Cancer. The mom told the kid they couldn't afford treatments and the mom was injecting toxins into her kid to make her sicker. In the End the Mom tried to frame a Child Pop star (Like M. Jackson) and it didn't work. It was spooky.

And now a real life story...

My Mom worked with a lady who pretended to have adopted a daughter. The daughter got cancer and died. This lady took the whole office for a 5 year ride. In the End a guy who knew her from a past employment came into the office for unrelated business and broke the lie wide open. It was scarey to think my own mom cried for the loss of a pretend child. My mom and her office donated thousands of Dollars to try to help the crackpot with her lie. Spooky.

Have a great day.

I hope the lady in britan has to pay all the money back and perform community service for 5 years. I hope she has to look into the faces of the people she lied to.

So how underweight was your daughter? How much weight had she lost in one hit? I am just curious, because my daughter has been underweight all her life (still is - has been around to 3rd - 5th percentile since she was born, and is still there at 4 1/2), and I would have seriously questioned any doctor trying to stick tubes in her and demanded some answers. I find it disgusting that they don't look into it pretty quickly. Was it purely weight LOSS or underweight? They are two different things.

Don't get me wrong, my daughter was tube fed the first 2 weeks of her life because she was born so underweight, and her blood sugar levels were dangerously low. Sometimes it happens. But an older child, I find it extremely neglectful of a doctor not to question why.

Don't they look into the reasons for weight loss before they start sticking tubes in?

they didnt for us. They put the tube in first find out reasons later, im talking months later. SO them inserting a feed tube is no surprise but I find it hard to believe they didnt look into reasons afterwards. that seems silly.

sadly, doctors are happy to use feeding tubes even in simple cases such as a child gaining a little less weight then normal. so that bit does not surprise me at all.

Yes, but at the very least, they should be doing it for more reason than the mother convincing them.  There would have to be some form of medical evidence that the child needed it, surely?  You would think anyway.....

weight loss is all they need and if the mother had not been feeding the child properly from the start then he would not have the skills later so maybe that was why she was able to convince them

She screwed up a little boy's life for money, and she only gets 3 years in jail for at most. Any system that can allow this sort of crap to go on for 6 years needs a serious overhaul. I am still trying to understand how the heck she convinced doctors to stick a feeding tube in him without some sort of evidence of illness......shouldn't those doctors also be accountable??

but the whole thing is disgusting and only getting 3 years jail is ridiculous

that has to be satisfying a psychological need...I can't believe somebody would torture their own child for welfare benefits...I won't.

I know Laura, it's hard to comprehend isn't it? I don't want to believe it either.

I guess we can't tell her true motivation from one news article, because we all know there is such a thing as media bias. But it sounded like her primary motivation was the money, which is just horrid.

There was a woman here in the states that did the same thing = several women/men actually - but the one I'm thinking of had 3 kids and only made 1 "sick". She stayed low profile but collected 10's of thousands of dollars in donations plus welfare benefits. The others, you could tell it was the semi-fame status and the "oh you're a saint for putting up with this trying situation" that drove them.

munchausen's syndrome...very very sad...that poor little boy

I have my doubts about it being muchausens because of the motivation.  She started it when he was born - she was able to claim while he was in ICU, but then, she used these excuses of him continuing to be sick so she could continue the disability pension.  This appears to be her entire motivation.  Munchausens, on the other hand (from my understanding) is motivated by the need for attention, sympathy, and so on.

It is my understanding that when it is not satisfying a phsycological need, it is not munchausens, it is more likely malingering for another purpose.  But it can often be difficult to determine the primary motive.
