An Illegal Alien's Guide to the Top Five Best Places to Live In America

MOST HELPFUL POSTS

Fair Warning: I'm going to be fairly harsh here, so don't read it if you don't have your thick skin on.

Illegal immigrants are not pests, or leeches, or problems that need to be eliminated, they are PEOPLE.

Have you lived the life of an illegal? I grew up with them--they don't live in the luxurious gov. funded apartments you imagine, most of them live in make-shift huts and shacks in alleys and forests. They have no electricity, no water, no warmth or cooling, and they are lucky if the shelter they built keeps them dry in a storm. They work day labor jobs earning less than $10/DAY and they use that to buy just enough food do get them by. And this is a life that is far better than most of them have ever known.

Our legal immigration process is impossible for all but the richest Mexicans, and they don't need to immigrate. You have to know enough English to pass the test. (You have to take the test in English now) Try learning a foreign language as an adult, but you can't use any books or audio tapes because a Mexican fleeing poverty would not have access to those. To get a Visa, you have to secure a job here or prove that you would be an asset to our workforce, but you have to do that with no phone and no internet access--a Mexican would not usually have access to that.

They come here to give their GRAND-children a chance at a better life. If they are lucky enough to get here before their children are born, they get assistance and put their child in American schools where they struggle because kindergarten is their first exposure to learning English. During their 12 years of education, they learn English well enough to teach it to their children, but college is out of reach for them due to poor performance in school. Most also have to drop out to help support parents who are often in poor health at young ages due to lack of access to healthcare, and long periods of hard labor, so they work minimum wage jobs (a step up from their parents). THEIR children, the original immigrant's grandchildren, have a chance at completing high-school and going on to trade school (or college if they are really lucky and can manage the financial aid process--there are very few scholarships for Hispanic immigrants).

Furthermore, we need them. Like it or not, they do the jobs legals won't do. There is a slaughter house here that proves that time and again. Also, despite a high unemployment rate, every applicant I got when hiring my housekeeper was Hispanic--not a single white, black, or Native woman applied, and no men. Why?

As for the idea that Native Americans are not "native" that is somewhat irrelevant. That discovery proved that we lived elsewhere before settling in the region that is now the US, but we were still the first people to settle here. (Edited to add: I'm Native American, for the most part)

We don't need to get rid of illegal immigrants, or punish them for coming here. We need to help them become productive members of society. How many white, natural born citizens who have every opportunity handed to them do we have on welfare because they CHOSE to throw away those opportunities?

And another thing, if we didn't make it so easy for drug cartels to come over here and buy guns to take back to Mexico, and if our War on Drugs didn't create such a lucrative black market for drugs in Mexico, maybe less people would be desperate to come here however they can, illegally if they have to. Just a thought.

So you're native american then? Because if not, we are all the product of immigrants -- legal or not.

I dont know if you can view it over there but you guys should really watch "Go back to where you come from" A doco putting 6 Australians in the shoes of illegals coming in to your country ...only a person seriously lacking in compassion and empathy could watch it and still not understand their need to escape .

Ronald Reagan gave amnesty to the illegal aliens in the 1980's to try and solve the "problem", it obviously didn't solve anything. I think that we need to enforce existing laws and make it easier for people to become citizens here, help people NOT to be here illegally. Just my opinion. You can never stop people from coming, and we shouldn't. And a fence is a TERRIBLE idea.

Dude, if being somewhere for more than 10,000 years doesn't make a group of people native, I don't know what does. lulz. Nobody is native to some place except for a handful of people in some valley in Africa?

I don't know much about this situation obviously. Being as we border the US and no one else, we don't have quite as many issues with this. I kind of wish we did though. I might be able to get some decent Mexican food.

Btw, anyone read The Tortilla Curtain by TC Boyle? If not, very good read on this subject....interesting intersections of perspective.

there is a HUGE misconception about illegal immigrants that they don't contribute anything to society. they PAY taxes. when they have a job, they get federal and medicare taxes taken out of their checks. when they buy products they pay sales taxes, they pay property taxes if they own a home, and indirectly if they rent. it is estimated that illegal immigrants pay 7 billion dollars in social security that they will never be able to claim. so in essence WE are sucking off of their work, as well. they also never get refunds during tax time for all the taxes they've paid throughout the year. where does that money go?
in 1996 a law was made that made it so illegal immigrants cannot receive welfare benefits, and can only get medical help if it is an emergency. even LEGAL immigrants cannot get welfare benefits for FIVE years after being in this country.

in some areas of the country i WILL give you that they take more than they put in, because there is such a large concentration of them there. but in other areas they contribute much more than they take, it balances out, some numbers out there even have it so they provide more than they take out of the system overall.
i am all for having people come here LEGALLY based on principal alone, however, demonizing these people based off of media hype and ungrounded fears is just not right.

Again with the FOX news .... elections are coming up and FOX is working hard to make folks hate, fear, and vote right

@ Sara ... this country was not just built on immigrants but slavery as well .... don't forget that part ... and now that it is built, now that, as immigrants, our tough job of sailing to these shores and killing all who live here is over, we get to be self- righteousness, selective, and superior.

We get to forget where we came from and feel entilted because our parents had the good sense to arrive before the gates closed.

There was a comedian I saw who felt this issue of immigration ought to be dealt with as a reality show; like Survivor.

So, each week someone is voted off based on their performance over the prior week. For example, Juan, who has been hiding by day in a neighbor’s garage but working each night as a janitor to put his kids through college and feeding the homeless every weekend, gets to stay.

While, Billy Bob, who has spent the last five years living in his mother’s basement watching TV gets booted off the show and out of the country.

Opinion yes but I've read a lot of statistics and facts on how much our government is chipping in to support illegals. Therefore, I don't think it's sheer opinion to say the government is paying severely to support illegals, or that this link I posted has no merit and is all opinion. The basis of saying these cities are welcoming illegals in, is an opinion. However, there are facts in there about city policies I don't agree with.

I do not support amnesty either which how you worded your posting makes me wonder if you do, Sara? I don't think it's okay they are here illegally. It shows they've broken rules and have not respected our system. Have already been 'leeching'. That shouldn't be allowed. So I think sending some packing, increasing our boarder security and well heck a fence or whatever you want to do...... isn't a bad idea. It's a crime, period. They are breaking rules. So no, it's not okay.

I'm anti-illegal immigrants not ALL immigrants. Have nothing against people who do everything legal to come here and live.

Technically Native American's aren't even native to this region either as genetics testing has finally been done. They immigrated here too.

And I agree with you - enforce existing laws.

The problem with illegal immigrants is not that they are here using our resources. The problem is that they are using our resources without contributing anything. America as a country was completely built on immigrants. There is nothing wrong with the idea of immigration. The problem comes when people do it illegally. They use our hospitals and our schools without paying taxes or getting health insurance. Now for the surprise, we should continue to let them use our hospitals and schools. That is not only the best option, it is the only option if we are going to be the country we say we are. If we are to be that shining city on a hill, we have to treat everyone as we would want to be treated. That means providing health care when it is needed and education for everyone.

The solution has nothing to do with a fence or kicking them out; what we have to do is find a way that forces them to contribute. This seems like a silly thing to say, but it isn’t even that hard. Just make them pay for those things they are using now, and they aren’t "leeches" anymore. They are now productive members of our society. How do you accomplish all this? There are several simple things that can be done. First off, it isn’t the immigrants that are cheating Uncle Sam, it is the employers who hire them for the cheap labor. Start enforcing the laws we already have and punish companies that pay illegal immigrants under the table. This means that to find work, the person must be documented. It is as simple as that. Another answer is the way we tax. In Tennessee for example, they have no state income tax. This means that any illegal immigrant pays the same taxes as a legal citizen. If we did this everywhere, illegal immigrants would no longer be a problem. They would contribute just as much to the system as they take out.

There are lots of solutions in the same ballpark as this. It's just that no one will get off their ass in Washington and make it happen.
