Anarchy? Or Communism? Which is Worse?

So my husband and I were recently talking about communism vs. anarchy and which would be the worse society to live in. The thread about Americans living in fear and giving up their rights brought it to mind. This is more for fun or out of curiosity...certainly not that I don't like democracy!!! (I would ALWAYS choose democracy hands down!)

Which society, if you had to choose, would you rather live in and why? An anarchist society with no laws or formal rules and no government infringement on rights, or a communist society with all laws and rules, your life pretty much dictated and government infringement on your rights?

I have not totally decided which would be worse. Instinctually, I feel an anarchist society poses great risks and dangers to ones safety and wellbeing. No laws to say not to murder me because I double parked at the grocery store. But my husband brought up a good point, an anarchist society would soon develop it's own laws...or code of honor more or less. But is that enough? I don't know. I guess in the light of the two, with a family to think about, I would have to choose communism for safety reasons alone. But I'm not 100% positive about that. What are your thoughts?

If I had to choose between anarchy and communism? I'd probably agree with your husband and choose anarchy because people have historically always found the need for a leader. In that sense, there never would truly be "anarchy" for long. I also agree that there would be a sort of honor code (eventually). I really just don't see that someone would actually shoot you for double parking, just because there's no law against it. Could they? Sure. There are laws against it now but it still happens so....I don't know. I just know that there is no way I'd want to live in a society where every decision, even regarding property ownership, would be made by someone else. To me, that is the opposite of freedom.

There are several different definitions of anarchy, communism and socialism. Aside from democracy (which is also my first choice), socialism doesn't seem all that bad. According to dictionary.com (Webster's), this is the definition of socialism that I could probably live with : a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

I think that in it's true definition, communism is close to ideal. Better than capitalism! I like the idea of wealth being shared, no extremes of wealth or poverty, no social classes, equality, etc. I don't like the idea of complete government control, but I think that was likely a perversion of communism. Since I live in a country that is more on the socialist end of things anyway, maybe communism isn't as much of a stretch.

I think it depends on the type of communism. Like LaCI said, Marx's version of communism is NOT Lenin or Stalin's version.
And anarchy..I don't know. I think people need guidance and rules set out in stone.

I'd rather live in a communist society any day of the week. Anarchy just wouldn't last, there would always a be A power that emerges by collective agreement or superior firepower, making into another type of governement. I like the idea of sharing wealth, though no political system is 100% without fault, of those 3, I think communism would be better..

Well, I consider myself a communist. So I'll choose communism. I believe in marxist ideas of a classless, stateless society. So in a way I'm really choosing both. In true communism, there is no state and therefore no government control.

I supposed you could look at it that way. To me, anarchy is about lawlessness, no rules, no limits, no boundaries, no governing forces. Dog eat dog world, each to their own. Communism is more of government control, making everyone work for the same goal (generally wealth) political agendas etc etc etc. I should add, communism and socialism are basically one in the same to me, so either or I guess.

Definitions from the web:

Definition of ANARCHY

1a : absence of government b : a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority c : a utopian society of individuals who enjoy complete freedom without government

2a : absence or denial of any authority or established order b : absence of order : disorder

so·cial·ism noun \ˈsō-shə-ˌli-zəm\

Definition of SOCIALISM

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods

2a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state

3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

com·mu·nism noun \ˈkäm-yə-ˌni-zəm, -yü-\

Definition of COMMUNISM

1a : a theory advocating elimination of private property b : a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed

2capitalized a : a doctrine based on revolutionary Marxian socialism and Marxism-Leninism that was the official ideology of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics b : a totalitarian system of government in which a single authoritarian party controls state-owned means of production c : a final stage of society in Marxist theory in which the state has withered away and economic goods are distributed equitably

(To me, communism implies much more than just simply state owned wealth or production, it's government control. The definition for anarchy is pretty much right on the head of my thinking.)

You would have to be specific, because by my definition communism is a form of anarchy
