My new place has small, black ants coming in from the cold! I have never lived in a place with ants before.

Any advice for dealing with these ants?

Ant traps. They are safe for use around pets and kids, just put them under things or behind things. They're small enclosed "huts" that the ants go in, eat and leave carrying poison back to their families. Works quickly and the only down side is the sweeping and vacuuming of all their tiny little carcasses.

HOME DEFENSE spray is a godsend! Spray around the perimeter of your home and try to find where they are coming in

Peppermint spray!!! All around the perimeter.

And like Amy said in their line, it's totally safe.

I rent and the place is mostly clean because I am just in the process of moving in, so it's not a lived in house. That beign said, I have eaten there and might have dropped crumbs now and then

There is Raid for crawling insects including ants. We don't get them in the winter, but we tend to get them at times in the summer.

If you rent, speak to your landlord first about the issue.

If you own and it's that bad that they're coming in during the winter I think an exterminator is necessary!

We had a problem with ants this this summer in our new place. I tried the ant traps and they didn't do jack. Luckily we discovered that they were coming in through the hole where our our satallite cable comes into the house. So we were able to seal it properly and that fixed the problem.

We always got ants here, until I bought some electrical bug repellers... Little plug ins that emit a high frequency sound that keeps them away. We barely even get any spiders. Only bad thing is they aren't good to use if you have small pets.

We also bought some Home Defense spray and sprayed it around the perimeter of the condo, plus any cracks in the walls. And keep it clean. Ants also don't like cinnamon, so you can try that.

I placed ant powder all along the outside of the house and this seemed to keep the ants out for long periods of time. But now I have a very environmental way of keeping the ants down as I had so many ants it attracted a woodpecker to the garden and now I have none as he has eatten the nests. Good old boy comes every day and has a good old munch. Fantastic and free too!

Talcom powder works well. Here in edenvale South Africa in the summer most of our houses are walked off by the ants coming looking for water and getting out of the heat. We use Talcom powder.

Lysol or Clorox kitchen spray. Spray along the line they are crawling, and they stop going that way. Also remove any fruity shampoos/conditioners/soaps or clean up drips really well.

Ant sand! I put it in all the cracks in the concrete outside and a line of it at the doors and just kept vacuuming heaps and wiping things out until they went away.
