Appliances-Not a Debate

[deleted account] ( 16 moms have responded )

So the etiquette question just had me thinking. What appliances do yo uuse the most? The least? Do you have OLD appliances...handed down to you from an older generation? Are you faithful to a particular brand? How much do you spend on appliances?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For me, I use my cheap-o Mr. Coffee pot daily. It has served me good over the course of 10 years and I see no need to buy a pricey coffee machine. I have a medium sized crockpot from the 70's (it's brown & olive green) and this crock pot is amazing! I love it more than my new crockpot. I need to buy a new Toaster Oven, but the "joke" between me & hubby is that I sold his childhood toaster oven from the 80's at a garage sale for $3! He wants me to scour garage sales for an old toaster oven! I also splurged this past father's Day and bought my hubby a Ninja blender-the kind you see on an infomercial. I love my Ninja!! I use my Hamilton Beach electric knife for roasts, and love that too. It was a cheapy one, maybe aroudn $20 but it works just fine. I have an electric griddle that I would like to replace too.
Oh, I never use my iron either! That's no fault of the iron, I just hate ironing and avoid it at all costs!
Most of our stuff is pretty new. We got a lot of new smaller appliances when we got married and moved into a brand new house right after our wedding, so of course, that came with brand new appliances. A lot of our stuff is Kitchenaid, and we've been pretty happy with it. The dishwasher annoys me sometimes - we get the gritty stuff on the glasses too. But I've started using the Finish (used to be Electrolux, I think) all-in-one action packs, and my dishes come out a lot cleaner now.
As for appliances I love- we love our Keurig coffee maker. I don't really drink coffee, so it's great for dh to be able to just make himself a cup in the morning instead of a whole pot that's just going to get thrown out. And I love that I can use it for tea and hot chocolate too. I love my Kitchenaid stand mixer. Although, we were given the pasta-maker and ice-cream maker attachments for it, and I've never used either of those yet. Maybe someday. :) I do love my crockpot too. It's older, not sure how old, but dh had it before we got married. As for things I never use - we were given a waffle maker for our wedding. Used it once, the plates didn't come out for washing, so it was a major pain in the arse to clean. So we gave it to my little sister! And I have 3 fondue pots, which I have used, I believe, once since we got married! I love the idea of doing fondue parties, but fondue is a lot of work and it just never happens!
we have all new appliances in my house, and i pretty much loathe them all. my stove broke on me 2 years after we got it, and it would cost as much as a new stove to replace, so i got a new stove a couple weeks ago. so far it's awesome, but we'll see. on top of that, my new washer got in january, is making a horrid clanking sound, the repair guy will be here tomorrow, it's still under warranty so hopefully i can stop shelling out money. my newer fridge works fine, but it has this huge drawer on the bottom that pulls out, and the lid lifts up automatically. anyway the lid broke off. the knobby thing that turns the light on as well, broke off so the light doesn't turn on when you open the right door.
my new dishwasher works fine so far...we'll see.
my microwave is the one i've had since i moved out on my own, it's probably13 years old and works fine.
i say all this new crap is CRAP.
I had my mother in laws old frying pan until my son broke it by pulling it off the bench. The legs snapped off it.
It's amazing how much we have relied on modern day appliances! I hate my dishwasher too, and this is the new one! Only 2-3 years old. I hated the old one as well. We have started ot handwash everything and use the dishwasher as a drying rack. I used to have a veggie/rice steamer, but got rid of it. I had a juicer-also got rid of it. Actually, there's a lot I got rid of on Craigslist or garage sales! Our toaster oven sucks at toasting bread & English muffins too :-(
I just realised I use a lot of appliances! I couldn't live without my espresso machine, I use my veggie steamer, slow cooker (crock pot), rice cooker, magic bullet, mixer, electric frypan and microwave a lot. Most of my stuff is newish, well purchased in the last 5 years anyway. My electric frypan was my mother in laws and it looks about 20 years old but I love it it's the only stainless steel one I have ever used that doesn't stick.
Ooo...I hate my dishwasher too. I'm saving my child care tax cheques for a new one. I'm not sure if that's what those cheques are intended for, but I can say that mummy will be cursing less at the dishwasher so it's probably good for the kid's mental state to get a new one. That's child care, right?
I have a new microwave, electric frying pan, electric steamer (best investment ever), dishwasher, dryer and kettle. My rice cooker, crock pot, washing machine, stick mixer, beaters, toaster, sandwich toaster and fridge were hand me downs from my mother in law. I'm faithful to Sunbeam and Westinghouse LOL. I'm pretty sure I'm getting a Mixmaster this year for Christmas. i have a food processor but wouldn't be caught dead using it.
I use the electric frying pan a lot for all kinds of things and the kettle and microwave for bottles. I use the dishwasher and washing machine every day too.
I have no brand loyalty to appliances.I have a lot of used and hand me downs and they all work great. My crock pot is ancient but I love it. The one appliance I do love is my K cup coffee maker. I love to just get up and have my coffee ready in a flash, and I always had a hard time making a small pot of coffee with my old one.
The only appliance I can't STAND in my house is the dishwasher. It's fairly new (5-10 years) but it NEVER cleans the top rack on the first wash! I rinse the dishes b4 I put them in, but there always seems to be this grainy stuff on our glasses grrrr! My fav appliance would probably be my oven. The clock has a light out (the 7 looks like a 1) but it cooks so fast & evenly!! It's one of the things I want to take when we move lol...the dishwasher can stay. hehehe (my dads moving in anyway, he's a bachelor w/2 teenage boys)
I still have my mum's old electric frypan. She got it for her wedding....in 1967. And it still cooks beautifully.
Most of the rest of my stuff is pretty new (well, probably not really, given some of it was given to me as wedding gifts my first time around about 18 years ago).
My favourite is my crock pot. It's not an old one, but it is about 10 years old. I use it ALL the time.
I am also one of those sad people who has never learned how to cook with a microwave. So I have one for heating, reheating and defrosting, but I never cook in it - I cook the old fashioned way :P
[deleted account]
My oven is 1959 original to my house! It has a door that swings open to the side, instead of down. Some of my casserole dishes won't fit in sideways. And I have to turn my dishes around halfway through cooking so they'll cook evenly. I dream of a kitchen remodel and a double oven!
I have a six year old Mr. Coffee that I'm ready to replace. My crock-pot is also six years old, but it's fine. Not sure where our microwave came from, but it's a hand-me-down and works fine. I bought my food processor at an overstock discount store. It's okay. I have a hand-held blender, but my mom told me I can have my Granny's old kitchen-aide stand up mixer. I just need to remember to get it next time I'm at my mom's.
My stuff is all new now because my hand-me-downs from my parents 1977 wedding have all finally died. And let me tell you - I'm not happy about it. I had the most kickass toaster oven. It died at over 30 years old. So we go and replace it with this fancy looking toaster. Fucking thing is awful. Toasts one side and not the other in some slots. Toasting time seems to be totally random. And don't even get me started on the 3 year old kettle death. Wtf is that? I'm not brand loyal. I buy whatever is cheap because I don't think there is any difference between a 30 dollar kettle and 90 dollar one. If this cheap one dies in 3 years, well...the rental cost was substantially less. Ha. The only thing I have any faith in is my Kitchenaid mixer. I use the shit out of that and it keeps going. Oh...my Champion juicer is a powerhouse too. Everything else in this house is junk. And you know they can do better because shit used to last. It's all a fucking conspiracy to get us to buy the latest thing. Meanwhile all these resources are getting used up and shit is getting thrown away. Yay for the world.
