Ashley Madison.com Ads

[deleted account] ( 15 moms have responded )

Since I've seen the sanctity of marriage debated here on many levels - outlawing divorce, should gays be allowed to marry etc., I thought that I'd post this.

For those who may not know, Ashley Madison.com is a website for married people looking to have an affair. They are trying to make a deal with the transit commision in Toronto to allow their ads on the side of street cars - one at first and if it worked out then 9 more ads would be placed. The wrap around ads would be pink with the slogan "Have an affair" in big white letters and the website underneath. There's a concern that it will cause more people to cheat. The deal is being voted on today and it's not expected to pass.

I think the ads are in poor taste but I don't think it will influence more people to cheat. My feeling is that if you're going to cheat then you'll find a way to do so. I'm curious as to how others feel about these ads.

That's what I meant (not group think...but normalization)...when walking down a street with no litter on it...people are likely to hold onto their garbage till they reach a garbage bin...when there is already litter on the street, people are more likely to just drop it.

I, for one, could care less about the ads on a personal level...they do not effect me or my relationship...it DOES effect society though, and I can't agree with it.

While I don't think that it would necessarily influence more ppl to cheat, I do think that it would make people (the ppl who are already cheating) feel like it is acceptable to be doing so.

Quoting Loureen:

It sounds like a decline into the normalization of cheating , i think it most certainly will encourage more cheating as it would be more accessible , i think the add will only wear away the bad image cheating has ( and it is bad ) and glamorize it .

Thank you Loureen.  I saw this thread and have been pondering on it as to how I felt.  And you have put how I felt into words perfectly.

In addition, I do believe that yes, if someone is going to be a cheater, they will be.  But often, the societal taboo will stop that person.  If it is normalised, accepted, then what is to stop that person?  There are people out there whose only fear about cheating is that they will get caught and be judged.  They don't not cheat because the believe they should be faithful to their partner.  So on that basis, making it more accessible and more acceptable could add to the probem.

Personally, I don't know how the creators of this site live with themselves, but that's their problem...... I couldn't.

I agree Loureen. While I think a person who has decided to cheat will cheat with or without these ads, I think there are many people who may have considered cheating or may be incredibly unhappy in their current relationship who might see these ads and think "why not check it out?" If people are constantly seeing ads for a cheating website, it will eventually become normal and an accepted part of life. I don't want my children growing up in a world where it is acceptable and normal to enter a marriage or committed relationship but join a cheating website when the going gets tough.

I think it is odd and in bad taste, but whatever it really does not offend me or bother me only because I won't have an affair with my husband unless as Sara put it vampires are real then that changes the whole scenario. Anyways an ad wouldn't influence me in anyway. I would probably think it was a joke until I found it was an actual real website then I would think what a bunch of friggin losers to use such as site and then I would join just so I could give a little advice to all the members...HOW ABOUT YOU DON'T GET MARRIED IN THE FIRST PLACE OR GET A DIVORCE YOU MORON.

I'm of the same mind. If a person is going to cheat they will find a way. After all they've been able to do it for years without the help of websites.

It is in poor taste though. I wouldn't want to run a website like that. I don't know how anyone could! But then I don't understand how people can cheat either.

I do understand there are laws for advertsing, I'm just saying that these Ashley Madison.com people, however disgusting the idea might be, have the right to advertise. You don't have to like it.

first...condoms and birth control are good things...second...cigarette companies are not allowed to advertise "start smoking" and booze companies are not allowed to say "go get drunk" There ARE laws about what kind of destructive things you can say in your advertising.

I want to ad, I would never, ever cheat on my husband (unless vampires were real, of course). An ad on the side of a bus is not going to change my mind about the commitment we have made to eachother and our own family. So, it just leads me to believe that people who are going to cheat already have their minds made up about it, so is an ad really going to put the final nail in the coffin? Bottom line, people have a right to advertise. Cigarettes are advertised, alcohol is advertised, condoms are advertised, birth control...

Groupthink might be what you're thinking of Laura. And you know, I think that may be true, because since I met you on COM, I've done lots of crazy stuff and I totally blame you! :P

I don't know...aren't people more likely to do a bad thing if they feel like "every else is doing it"? (honestly...I think there have been studies done) I know people who have been to Ashley Madison and they say it's hilarious cause you never know who you are talking to...cause nobody is willing to put their picture up LOL.

I agree with you Wanda. I do think it is in bad taste, but you know I also think it's bad taste to call Obama Hitler, but people have the right to do it. People are going to cheat if they're going to cheat, I'm sure they do it now untilizing other personals websites.
