Astrology - complete nonsense?

[deleted account] ( 41 moms have responded )

I have long wondered why on earth there are still star charts in the newspapers etc when astrology seems to me to be complete nonsense.

So this is how it works - a couple of thousand years ago someone pointed at a few stars and decided that their pattern reminded them of a certain animal, and so from then onwards, if you are born during a certain time of the year, you are meant to have the traits of that animal (or some other thing)?? Please!

So what if those stars are millions of light years apart from each other and the shapes maybe have changed so that those original patterns no longer exist? So what if you have already been in existance for 9 months before your birth, why should the moment of birth have such a permanent influence on your personality?

Is it time that astrology be put to bed along with other prehistoric beliefs?

Ok, I am gonna get all....weird with this. We are literally ALL a part of the Universe. Agreed? We were made from star dust....from explosions of different stars, celstial bodies, we share the same compositions as everything else in the universe. I mean this literally. We are so tied into the Universe, but are so arrogant as a species, that we think we are the bomb diggity...we are it.....we are the most important thing. Not really. How could we be literally conjured from all the elements in the Universe....but NOT be effected by the Universe?

Astrology, christianity and any other thing one must "believe" in is complete nonesense. However, if we put to bed astrology then lets put to bed christianity to.
I say let's all be openminded to other peoples beliefs and if you don't like someones belief nod and move on. I don't believe in christianity anymore than astrology. I have my own separate and individual religion. I personally think it is ridiculous that anyone would get on here and suggest that it might be time to take someone elses religion away. Shall we start with yours? What religion are you? Some denomination of christianity? witch? pagan? astrologist? atheist? etc?

What do you include as a prehistoric belief, Buddhism (2500 years) Hinduism (4000 years) Judaism (3000 years) Christianity (2000 years)?
Personally I think it's a load of rubbish but if people want to believe it and it's not hurting anyone else what is the problem?

[deleted account]

Marina you make a very good point and I agree completely with it..... just like you i'm not trying to turn this into a religion vs science debate either but in my opinion... what is so wrong with people believing in this, if its ok for some to believe in god? Makes no sense to me why not just leave people be to what they want to believe in whether its been proven or not... as far as I know the existence of god has never actually been proven either.

Point is... astrology being a belief system for some should NOT be put to rest unless every other belief system is put rest.

I do not believe in it in the slightest. As long as it's for fun, I see no harm in it. To me it's like a Magic 8 ball, no matter how studied the charts are. I've had mine done by an old customer and it wasn't even close, unless I'd really wanted to stretch the links to their most ridiculous extremes. I am a Sagittarius, right plum in the middle, and it really does not describe me much at all. I am also a Dragon in Chinese astrology and that one is even farther from me.

I do think that basically anything, religious beliefs, supernatural beliefs, even everyday practical beliefs can be skewed by unscrupulous people who wish to take advantage of us. I see taking money from people to do their astrology chart as no different from selling them that Magic 8 ball. But when you start telling them which decisions to make "or else" and suggest that this advise is somehow based on evidence, then I have an issue with it. To me, there is no excuse for taking advantage of vulnerable people, even if one claims to be "helping" them. Most of the time, it really doesn't. But then, I have little patience for any sort of made up stories that are supposed to make people feel better just based on lies. I agree with Jen that our real evidence based existence is enough.

i don't think it's credible. there are sometimes that it's dead on, but i don't hold much faith that everybody born in june is just like me. seems silly.

[deleted account]

I didn't care for that film. ;)
But seriously folks (as the comedians say), I would have to see evidence before I could be convinced.

Actually it's precisely because I think humans are an incredibly insignificant part of the universe that clouds of gas that may not even be there anymore would have zero impact on us. To suggest they do because we are all star stuff would mean that it affects everyone at the same time. I could also use that logic and say that a baby is crying because somewhere in the south pole a baby penquin just died.

Why wouldn't it Jakki? So many things are suppose to make a huge impression on us from the day we are born...being held by mom immediately, smells, sense of security feeling love in the room...so many things. Why would it not imprint on you the lining of the planets?

[deleted account]

I could possibly believe that a celestial body, say the moon, could affect your mood or your behaviour at any one moment. But why one earth would the moment of your birth give a permanent stamping on your personality, lasting your entire life??

I just don't see how people can believe that balls of gas floating millions of mile away can have an effect on your daily life or personality - just my opinion though!!

[deleted account]

Perhaps I'm not understanding your point. What exactly do you use it for?

And again, if astrology had any actual evidence behind it, I guarantee you that evidence would be out there. I'ts been tested often enough. It's been reviewed often enough. I wasn't joking about James Randi. They've had multiple astrologers over the years apply. Both the negotiations for the preliminary test and the test results are available for public reading. They end up not being able to do what they say they can do under circumstances they agree to. I encourage you to read them, if only to see what I'm talking about.

http://forums.randi.org/forumdisplay.php...

This is a link to the challenge applications through 2009. The challenge itself went through some changes in 2010 so they didn't have any posted at that point but you can read more there. Enjoy.

"Astonomy has evidence. if you sincerely believe that you are able to chart with accuracy, why not apply for the James Randi Challenge and win?"

Yes, astronomy has (some) evidence. Now, only after hundreds of years of study and improvements in technology! Who knows what 500 years will bring and what "evidence" will it discover.
As for charting with accuracy? My computer does that. Am I able to "predict" with accuracy? No. I don't use astrological insight to necessarily predict anything.... I use it to *interpret* events and peoples motives/reasonings. I try to understand them. I do not use astrology as "fortune telling" nor do I use it to predict the future. Some people are skilled at that (majority are not, or very poorly so, as to render it useless - though there are the extremely rare ones with that kind of insight).
Again, most here have said things that ridicule astrology and people who use it, and all of them pretty much do not know anything about it, nor understand it. My point still stands.

If you say so Jen, I'm at a loss as to how I've put down the Humanist Movement, but if you say I did then it must be so.

I found this;

"New Humanism is based on two basic points:
Solidarity – defined as treating other people the way one would like to be treated and,
Coherence – defined as thinking, feeling and acting in the same way.
The project of the Humanist Movement is to eradicate war, hunger, poverty and economic exploitation across the planet and develop a new system based on the value of human life as the central value, higher than money, power, prestige, etc. This vision of the future is called the Universal Human Nation. The methodology used is to work in groups and undertake personal development activities as well as social projects. Once sufficiently experienced, new groups develop according to their interests.
New Humanists share the following Humanist Attitude:
Placing the human being as the central value and concern, in such a way that nothing is above the human being and no human being is above another.
Affirming the equality of all human beings.
Recognizing personal and cultural diversity, affirming the characteristics proper to each human group and condemning discrimination, whether motivated by economic, racial, ethnic, or cultural differences.
Developing knowledge beyond the limitations imposed by prejudices accepted as absolute and immutable truths.
Affirming the freedom of ideas and beliefs.
Repudiating violence in all its forms."

But I still don't understand how I've supposedly put down anyone with some simple questions since I was wondering and thought someone might be able to answer them. Instead because you don't personally believe, you've tried to put me down or put me in my box and then proceeded to put Aleksandra down.

If you (general you) don't like it/believe it, don't do it. it's quite simple.

I personally think it's silly. Saying that everyone born when I was is going to be like me is just ridiculous. I have never believed them nor will I ever believe them. Altho I will admit, I get a kick out of reading them.

"If we don't believe in something what do we have? What's the point of anything? Why continue on with the human race?
"
And yet in that statement, you totally put down the humanist viewpoint. :)

there is a lot even without anything supernatural. There is so much in the natural world to be amazed at that I don't understand wanting to go outside it to be amazed and spiritually moved. Again, I think it's nonsense which was the original question. I again liken it to adults with binkies in their mouths. It hurts no one but do you really have any respect for the person cashing you out with a dummy in their kisser?

I, actually have been a student of astrology for over 20yrs now. Ok, last 10 were not very active, but nevertheless. I do own a computer program calculating the chart (infact, during this time, I have owned 3 or so) . Now its just as easy to hop online to one of the websites and have a chart calculated. I am by no means an expert on astrology, neither would I call myself an astrologer, but I know a whole lot more than most would. And it is only nonesense to some of YOU, may be because you know nothing of it. Most people, in the dark and middle ages, used to think of the sciences, including astronomy, as hogwash too. Why? Because they did not understand it, or know anything about it. They also lacked knowledge in general. People/humans have this habbit of belittling, insulting and dumping on things they have least understanding of...... Have any of you noticed that before?

Oh, and there was a time where astrology and astronomy were one and the same...lol Funny that.

I also think a bit more like JuLeah regarding this topic - astrology that is - so please read her comments on previous page - quite wise.

Oh yeah I loathe the scam artists too, and you're right, true astrological charts are amazingly intricate and not something I'd do (i'm sure I'd fuck it up), but I'm happy to do, tarot/angel readings, reiki, couldn't do the ruins either or palm reading or take your call (not anymore though I stopped doing calls and sms readings).

*shrugs* I believe what I believe, and I'm quite happy for others to believe what they believe.

Huh.....Interesting conversation. Personally, I like astrology. I fit my sign to a t. Also, there is one sign i do not particularly get along with, and I find out their sign...usually I just say "go figure". It is odd, I have only been drawn to people with a certain sign well before I knew what they were. I think it is harmless fun, and often thought provoking.

It might hurt their pocket book Cathy but it doesn't hurt them. It actually, in most cases, helps them. A lot of the time I found (particularly the night calls), were from lonely people just wanting someone to talk to, to hear someone say, there is light at the end of the tunnel and you can move forward, and you are not alone. People DO care about you, you are not invisible, that they are indeed connected.

Expensive? Yes, but no more than therapy and not everyone is comfortable talking face to face.

I don't really understand the issue man has with wanting to put down everything people believe. If we don't believe in something what do we have? What's the point of anything? Why continue on with the human race?

Let the Christians believe in their God.

Let the Muslims believe in their God.

Let the Hindu's believe in their God.

Let your neighbour believe in Astrology.

and what ever the hell else is out there. It's not hurting you so why do you care what people are believing?

lets not bring extremists into this either, because no faith (imo) is about hurting others, it's just about giving people a little hope. What's wrong with that?

[deleted account]

For me it's entertaining, and what's so wring with having a little humor and entertainment in your life?! I'm a fish ;-)

"But, this is comfort to many, so why toss it out? It hurts no one, helps a lot ... that you don't understand or believe only means you don't need to follow it ...."

Seeing a grown adult carrying a blankie or using a binkie hurts no one and yet there are very few people who think it's healthy. I view astrology and it's ilk to be the same.

It is like many things in our world. You get out of it what you bring to it. You bring contempt, so you get little :)

Others see it as a tool, a guide in their lives and they get more out of it.

It is a way to focus your thoughts ... answers we need are already within us, sometimes we need help 'seeing them'

This can be a great tool ... your mind finds the meaning it is looking for, and you have your 'answer'

There is so much more to this then I know or understand, so for one who follows this, my post will likely sound disrespectful - don't mean it that way

I find sometimes, I am searching for an answer, I can pick up a book, any old book, flip open to any page and read ... often what I am looking for is there - reading the signs is like that to my way of thinking

But, this is comfort to many, so why toss it out? It hurts no one, helps a lot ... that you don't understand or believe only means you don't need to follow it ....

[deleted account]

Astrology is like religion. Some people will never give it up no matter how much nonsense it's shown to be becuase " Well, you just can't prove it's not real."

Like ghosties and ghoulies and long-leggedly beasties and things that go bump in the night.

I agree with you Jakki it is a load nonsense and as long as people use it as just a bit of fun then that's fine - but some people do put a lot of faith in it and I think that's rather worrying!

Edited to add; My hubby has an astrophysics degree and when he told people what he was syudying they used to say things like "So I'm a virgo what does that mean?" He'd have to remind them that was astrology not astronomy - big difference! LOL!!!

[deleted account]

Maybe if you looked more into it and tried to understand it a little better you might get why its still around and why people believe it. What Tracey said hit the mark... astrology was around long before most religious beliefs including christianity. Its not hurting you so why bother complaining about it? Im not a huge believer in it but i think it holds some merrit only because my kids' personalites match their zodiacs to a T its almost scarey.
