" Attention Walmart shoppers, all blacks need to leave the store! "

I think it would do the world good if you all read Joy Leary's POST TRAUMATIC SLAVE SYNDROME. This book talks about trials and tribulations blacks have had to deal with in slavery and there after, and how it has affected all of the African American population of today. We can NOT ignore the injustices faced by ALL americans! We have to acknowledge it and learn how to move on together. Putting our heads in the sand doesn't make it go away! Ignoring an injustice is like saying it is okay to do it! So please don't think if we look the other way we are doing the world good! Cuz you know next time someone might ignore your pretty white ass getting beat by your equally nice white CEO husband who had too much to drink at a charity dinner where he just donated crap loads of money...but I guess that doesn't happen either does it? Women aren't important anyway... We have to voice things to make a change! Read the book, gain a little insight!

Im not saying they need to "get over it" because they are black. While I have no doubt that in that moment everyone in the store was scared and worried about what would happen next. The fact is nothing happened. Its about taking a step back and saying, it was a silly kid, playing a stupid prank. Not Wal marts fault and moving on. If this women really truely fears wal mart now, than she has a lot more issue's going on in her life and this was just the straw that broke the camels back.

I had a very good "black" friend *who has since passed away* (she was actually aboriginal) we both got kicked out of a local store because she was black and I was with her. (guilty by association) I've seen it for myself, I know it happens. But if that situation was reveresed and it was a black kid pulling a stupid prank on white people, do you think it would over dramatic for a white lady to say she was never going back to wal mart..... I think that would be considered racist due to the suggestion that she would fear black wal mart shoppers !

I don't care what people's skin color is, the kid could have aimed his insult at puple martions from jupiter and my reaction would still be the same !

It was a bratty ass child who is now facing charges. As long as people continue to make a big deal out of race - we will never be equal. You're black, I'm asian so fucking what?

i agree that this shit will never go away, but we have come a long way! where i grew up there were not many black people. i don't think there was a single black person in my entire school career. my father had taught me his way of dealing with black people, and that was him calling them racial slurs and me being afraid of every black man i saw. eventually i grew up and began to think on my own and wondered why he felt this way.
my kids are growing up to not question their differences. our neighbor is black, my kids have never once questioned me about the color of his skin. they are 10, 5 and 3. all they care about is that anthony is cool, and plays football with them, and makes them some killer bbq (much better than yours mom!!), and gives them pop all the time.
i feel that the subject of race hasn't been brought up to them so they don't think that there is anything different or wrong with a black person. i think that needs to continue. i know bringing up racial differences, and all the inequality is something that people need to hear about, but i can't help but feel that if all the talking about it was gone, more people would be like my children and not give a crap about the color of somebody's skin. they'd see it more as a difference in hair color and nothing else. i'll stop rambling now......

I don't think we should ever forget what horrible things early americans did or the native slavers in africa. It was a horrible time and heinous things were done.

But they were one throughout the ages. Hell, they used to make eunuchs of men to keep them more docile.

We shouldn't forget the holocaust either. But standing around screaming "entitlement!" doesn't fix anything.

I'll be damned if I'm supposed to pay for the bad acts of earlier ancestors.

I refuse to be judged by what other white people did.

I'm a decent person and I don't give a fuck what color you are. I do care if you stink. Or if you've got breath that could make bigfoots eyes water.

I don't like whiny people either. Just don't accept the injustices heaped on you. Ignore the idiots that can be safely ignored.

I really think it would be best if this woman sued the HELL out of that kids parents. But I'll bet she doesn't. Why? Because she doesn't want a single wide trailer in white trash hell. Which is smart of her. Although I would do it. And I'd lease it out to more white trash and be thrilled that I was just taking their beer money.

I have to go kick my husbands ass, he's being a whiny ass bitch.

Great post Erin. It would be so nice and lovely and rosy if we could all stop noticing skin color and no one would ever face discrimination, hatred, or judgment for their race. But sadly, we are no where close to that happening, and I honestly do not believe it is human nature regardless. As much as we might wish otherwise, there is always going to be racist bigots and the much more common mistakenly racist thinking (those people that don't realize that their beliefs are actually racist). We've all got to own up to our own prejudices and face them head on.

I don't think that this woman should be entitled to sue Walmart, if that is her intention. But I can understand that she may feel very stressed by the occurrence. For me, it seems like no big deal, but then I haven't lived a life time of being targeted by bigots. I'm not saying that this was necessarily the case for her, but it certainly is possible. We don't know why she reacted so strongly, but if it is genuine (I tend to be skeptical of people's real feelings where $$$ and lawsuits are concerned) then we should give her the empathy that she needs. I don't think Walmart need apologize, but I'd love to see that kid get some serious community service time and some intensive sensitivity training.

As for black people "getting over it"... Are people seriously suggesting that the history of slavery and oppression and continuing discrimination should just be forgotten because things aren't as bad now as they once were? Frankly, racism seems to be taking an upswing right now, and everyone needs to stand up and recognize it. Not just pretend we're all great friends.

I've always wondered what a strawberry shortcake was, sounds like a sponge cake topped with cream and strawberries.... would that be a fair sum up ? If so Im slighty dissapointed :( I thought it was something heaps cooler than that !

Tah, I certainly hope I didn't upset you with my posts. Im sure the wal mart gal has alot more going on besides this. My reponse is to her comment about wal mart. I just think based on this single event her response was over dramatic. But your right, walk a mile in her shoe's ! I don't believe ignoring racism will make it go away. I have seen the post you created in the other debating group. I don't think turning a blind eye is going to fix anything. But everything does need to be kept in perspective. I am certainly not racist... I've dated my fair share of multicultral guys. A person is a person regardless of where they come from and what color there skin is.

If any of you do happen to see a puprle martion for jupiter though, please tell them I said Hi !!!

I agree w/the "just getting fed up" but its not a race thing. Its a fear thing. 2 years ago some nut pulled a gun at our walmart (omg what a paragon of retailers it is) during a sale. White, Hispanic, Black... I have no idea. But I didn't feel that safe in that area of the store anymore. Its a relatively quiet section. I found myself avoiding it.

Its fear. She definitely can't avoid being black, although michael jackson did a fair good of it, (sorry sorry I'm kidding sort of) but she can avoid walmart. However this is not walmarts fault. Which I thought was the original question. I'm also pretty sure I read or I inferred from what I read, that this "fear" and "blame walmart" thing is the beginning of a lawsuit.

Dana, I cooked up 3 gallons of japanese curry yesterday. So I'm thinking we'll have curry again tonight, lol.

Followed by strawberry shortcake... YUM!

im not talking about suing walmart..i know some people may know someone who this and that happened too..but she may be wondering what..if anything could happen next..i'm sure she will probably go back into a walmart...but you never know what someone is really thinking and if i was kid who got caught doing something like that i would say it was a joke, and maybe it was..maybe it wasn't..she has the right to feel how she feels..and maybe it was the straw that broke the camels back...thats' why i said..walk a mile...heck..maybe she is from the south where a cross was burned on her lawn and this unsettled her..and i think she has the right to be....some people may overreact..but without knowing her and what she has encountered...how can i judge that she is one of those people..sometimes you just get fed up...

Look, Jess is right. I've lived in the south, I've seen crosses burned on the lawns of my black friends - THOSE people had the right to be scared.

A little turd raised by morons telling all black people to get out of walmart is nothing to be afraid of. Especially since he has since been caught and is facing punishment (even its likely to be mild).

She needs to sue the kids' parents for child neglect and emotional abuse and whatever else her lawyer can dream up and take their trailer, pickup truck and hound dog away from them! But walmart isn't at fault.

I don't see people suing for feedback squeal when someone's baby snags the phone behind the cashier while looking over mommies' shoulder. (it happened the other day and was funny as hell) it hurt my ears! I might develop tinnitus!! WTH?

wow....is all i can say to that...but that's the main attitude people have about things that happen to black people....get over it right??? ok then....she may be nervous about what is to happen next time she goes into walmart...i mean look at the black woman going into the cracker barrel with her young daughter, when a whiite man coming out almost hit her daughter with the door, the lady said to him..and by witness account..it was not in a confrontational way..that he had almost hit her daughter so please be careful..he began to beat this black female military reservist in front of her daughter while yelling racial slurs at her until she became unconscious...I bet she would have welcomed a "joke" in ill taste to that. So yes, when things like that happen, it can make you uncomfortable and leery....but i imagine that is just reserved for the other people who aren't black who have had worst things happen to them....walk a mile...and by the way..i'm fine with being called black...it's the negro i'm not to fond of...

Dana you can't pay with peanuts... we banned those in one of the other debates !!! Are you trying to kill us all ? (im not mocking peanut allergy I promise).

While I take racism very seriously, I just think that women needs to get over it. It was a kid being stupid and playing a prank. Yes it was in bad taste, yes he should be punished and clearly needs some counciling, but its not walmarts fault. Its completely over dramatic to say " I can't go back in there". GET OVER YOURSELF !!! If this is the worst thing that happens to you in your life because of the color of your skin, then you have done really well. People have a lot worse happen to them and they weren't all black. Oh I can't say black anymore, we debated that one too !!!

I take it that this was in the states. Here in England if there was a white pride march it would be a blood bath. There is no way the march would be aloud and quite rightly so. You will always get somebody who thinks they are superior and that goes for all races. We are all getting better with race relations but sometimes this is just politics gone wrong. In England if three white people and one any other nationality be it polish, french or indian go for a job the employer is frightened not to give the gob to the minority because they use the race card. You then have to prove as an employer why that person did not get the job and it all turns nasty. Here it is getting ridiculous and whilst people do this it does not bode well for living in harmony. You now have to send a photo with most cv's and I do wonder if this is to prove the colour of your skin. The whole thing is a disgrace.

[deleted account]

It's not only disturbing, but I am certain that as a minor, he will get a slap on the wrist and released to his parents. Whatever charges that may be put on a juvenile record will be sealed. That is the system and how fucked it is. I would love to hear the parent's point of view: whether they approve of his actions or are actually decent parents and are appaled by the little shit's behavior.

Hatred breeds hatred-plain and simple. If you are raised to hate, then you don't know any other way. In 1997-98 school year I had this nasty kid in my class. Well eventually he spewed how much he hates me and his father is getting his schedule changed because he doesn't want a Jew to teach his kid. And then it snowballed a bit from there with some more anti-Semetism comments and crap. So this kid was taught to hate me, but had no clue why! I would love to hear more about this kid's background who pulled this vile Walmart stunt.
