A Republican, very pro-gun American friend, who I am tempted to unfriend, posted this on FB. It seems to contradict what I have heard you all saying about gun control, and I think it's produced by the NRA, so.... Just wondering whether it has any basis in fact whatsoever.

No, it appears they have used selective statistics in order to manipulate to their own benefit. I am not sure when that was filmed, but Armed Robbery statistics, as at 2007 are relatively stable (they are the same as they were back in 1995). Armed and unarmed robberies follow similar patterns, so when compared properly, it is a trend that is totally unrelated to gun buybacks, but generally associated with other facts (in fact, times of economic hardship generally presents an increase in robberies overall).

I also see that they failed to report the fact that firearms related deaths reduced by 47%, and that our homicide rate, overall, has also reduced, as has our overall violent crime rate.

Now, admittedly, this may or may not be as a result of the gun buy back. But we don't have 3000 children a year hospitalised as a result of accidental shootings because we demand the right to have guns in our homes ready and loaded as protection. I walk out my door every single day and I feel SAFE without a gun. I feel safe at night without a gun.

Statistics are a wonderful thing when you want to use them for a cause. You can manipulate them any way you choose.

With regard to the sob story about the collector, collectors were allowed to keep their guns if they wanted - they just had to have them disabled so they couldn't be used. Sporting shooters, if they are members of a club, are still permitted to get a licence for their gun to use at the club. People who have a property and shoot on that property, are still permitted to get a licence (with permission of the owner of the property). Half those people in that video, if their gun was necessary for one reason or another, could have kept their gun. Only a select few people objected to the gun buyback. It seems like the NRA found them ;)

These are the crime stats for state of Victoria (in Aust), whichI live in, for the last period of 2011/2012.
If you read the first few pages, it is a summary of the results.
Robberies decreased by 2% from last period of 2010/2011 to 3353.
50% of armed robberies (which account for 48.6 % of robberies) are perpetuated with a knife. 17% are with a gun (this also includes an imitation gun- which happens more frequently than one would assume, as funny as that may seem).
Aggrivated burglaries (45.1 per 100000 population) and residential burglaries increased over that period. The number of aggrivated burglaries involving a weapon or causing injury increased over this period by 6.7% , and accounted for 21.7% of aggrivated burglaries! No weapon type was specified.
There 91 murders for this time period but weapons used were not specified, at least in the summary. All up the homocide rate was 3.1 per 100000 population, where the statistic includes 173 in total, where 140 of these offences were substantiative, and 33 were attempted, conspiracy or incitement. No weapon types were specified. The population of my state is 5.6 million people.
So I guess I would suggest other states may have other stats, though I would highly assume similar. Also, given that my state has about 25% of entire Australian population size, these stats carry a lot of weight for the stats for Australia as a whole.

I don't know about their legal definitions of home invasion, but violent crime rates and robberies with the people still home have both gone up drastically in Australia since the gun ban.
The stats about home guns being more dangerous to their owners than to criminals come from a study that was discredited years ago. It carefully cherry picked homes that had a history of violence and drug use before they got guns. According to the FBI's statistics, law abiding gun owners use guns to deter violent crime about 10 times as often as criminals use guns to commit crimes.

Serious as a heart attack! Anything in the news that was attrubuted to a death you can count on a stupid ass comment like that and that was the latest.

There was even one that said if John McLain made the same decisions Obama has we'd be crucifying him but since Obama is better looking and can read a telepropter better we support him. Seriously...are we that stupid that we follow our President because he's handsome and well spoken?

Seriously Kristi? People say that shit and compare SNOW (i.e. nature, against which we cannot have laws) with GUNS (i.e. man made and marketed, against which we can have some level of control??). ? Wow......

I can barely stand to open my FB anymore for fear of finding one more "Oh I guess we have to ban the snow now, somebody died because of it" post! I just want to scream! I will stop now or most post will be 12 pages long and would mostly likely be flagged and deleted rather quickly! ; )

No, they haven't Sally. Where are you getting YOUR data from? That statement is not supported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, so evidently you are being fed bullshit by the NRA.

Thanks Jodi! That's what I thought, but I thought I'd see what you all had to say. :) I'm getting really tired of all the pro-gun propaganda showing up in my newsfeed these days!

Home invasions are also not up. They have just selected a couple of stories to appeal to emotions.

In fact, statistics also show that if you HAVE a gun, you are more likely to be shot. So.....yeah, total propoganda.
