The top court in Canada's Ontario province on Monday legalized pimping and brothels in an attempt to make prostitution less dangerous for those employed as sex workers.

The landmark decision noted that prostitution is very dangerous and existing laws prevented sex workers from banding together and hiring security guards.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The case will most likely be appealed to Canada's Supreme Court and a final decision is thought to be at least a year away, according to the Globe and Mail.

Communicating for the purposes of prostitution will still be illegal, according to the judgement, the newspaper reported. Keeping this part of the current law in place will likely help assuage fears that the new laws will encourage sex workers into overtly propositioning clients in public, the newspaper added.

hmmm... I can see this being very good and being very bad.

I can see it definitely helping safeguard those in the sex industry. Goodness knows they need it. On the flip side, I can see it being viewed as accepting prostitution in a public sense. Obviously, the Province is accepting that there is Prostitution and that it needs safeguards implemented but what about the regular folk? Are they going to take this as it is "OK" to seek a prostitute?

Thoughts? Do you think legalizing brothels and pimping a good idea everywhere? Do you think this may increase prostitutes to seek clients more commonly in Public?

I fully support changing these laws. I would like to see it regulated, monitored, and taxed. I also would like to see the "communicating for the purposes of" laws changed so that they specify that it can't be done in a "public place". I do think low end, basic survival, drug addiction prostitution will still happen on the streets out of desperation though. But we need to do what we can to protect the women working in this industry and provide safer communities for all.

Having worked in a community from which 60 women from the sex trade went missing and were murdered by a serial killer, there is no excuse good enough for me to support the continued victimization of this segment of society. Even those low end street hookers who will still inevitably be out there need to be properly protected. They are most often victims of horrific childhood abuses, families with substance problems, and mental health disorders. If we want them to not be in that lifestyle and stop the cycle, we need to stop contributing to their victimization.

Women who are choosing to be in the sex trade who are not in the "survival sex trade", should have the right to ply their trade within the confines of a business licence and be subject to health regulations and taxation, just like any other business. I would also hope that this might make it more difficult to traffic women for the sex industry and put a few pimps and gangs out of the business.

Prohibition clearly has not worked, it is time to try something new.

This had best become legal! I live in the core of Hamilton, I have hookers outside my home from spring until Fall. I spend a lot of time asking hookers to leave my area of town, because I have impressionable children. I also dont like the fact that with hookers come major drugs (meth, herion, crack). So legalize it, put them behide closed doors.

Btw hookers ALREADY seek clients in PUBLIC areas. Its called a street corner LOL. At least if legal they can set up a place of business and clients can come to them instead of standing outside my house looking for one.

You made me spit my coffee! Yes, you are absolutely correct. That's not what I meant, sorry for not explaining better. I meant is it going to make the business more prevalent and encourage them seeking clients in more public places, then certain/specific corners. Like maybe the mall? I dunno, just more public, since they may feel this law is allowing them to do their deed. Since the act is not legalized, just them being able to protect themselves is.

Wow, I am sorry that you have to live with this outside your home. I hope for you and other's that have this type of shady activity outside their home, it remains legal and perhaps keeps them off of the corner's as much. A Brothel is a great place for them. Let them ban together and stay together. ;)

However, I agree. I think they should legalize Prostitution. In some places it is and it keeps them off of drugs. They have to take drug and STD tests frequently to prove they are free of both. This would calm a lot of the "bad" parts that come with this line of money making. I mean, I think it is nasty anyway but meh, many splurge for it... Yep, make it legal all the way around. Tax the hell out of it and make them complete frequent standardized testing. ;)

Ahh, I mean those on the corner. ;) I fully support Brothel's, especially those that have strict testing for STD's and drugs. Much better than having them on the corner.

I'm not huffy over sex (well maybe when I am engaged in it, I am a bit huffy), it would just be nice if it wasn't outside people's bedroom windows, perferably behind a bedroom wall... lol

I don't know why people get all huffy over sex...it's the reason why we're all here. :P

Do you live in my neighbourhood Amanda? Ha. It's just getting terrible here. I'd much rather these girls were in licensed brothels with medical care. At the same time, I don't know if legalizing it will help the worst of the worst because they are usually in it for the drugs and I assume a licensed brothel wouldn't allow drug use.

That may be hard.. Go ask the "girls" if they mind putting some long skirts on and carrying a briefcase for a day or two.. ;)

I agree 100%, I assume they will take their marketing to newspapers like the higher end call girls are always in. Clearly they will have to make laws about public marketing to avoid children seeing it. But all around it is for sure a great idea.

Dont worry I am moving soon, if I can convince someone to buy my house LOL.
