What do you think? The school says that it is due to safety concerns. Some are suggesting that the school is politicizing the girls basketball team (they were supposed to go for a tournament). I'm not sure what I think. Perhaps the school knows that a student is "illegal" (I think it's ridiculous to refer to a human being as illegal). When I was teaching in Boulder, CO., we had several "illegal" students and would have been terrified to take them to AZ., after the passage of this law.

I think it's ridiculous. They should be able to go for their tournament. They are being used as political pawns. If they are afraid they have an illegal, then that student shouldn't go, or they should just focus on being in this country legally.

I feel bad for the girls too Dana...they apparently had a wonderful season, and worked really hard to raise money for the trip. It is a hard lesson to learn, but perhaps not a bad one. Most student populations in Chicago are VERY diverse...I don't know this school or area very well, so I don't know what the pop. is like there. Sending highschool girls into (what some AZ residents claim is practically) a war zone seems crazy to me. They might not be asked to show papers in a hs gym, but what about outside of the school? I'm sure that ALL of their parents couldn't make the trip. What if something did happen, and a child was stopped and questioned and their parent was a thousand miles away in Chicago?...I wouldn't want my kids to go there without me right now! The school IS working with the girls to try to find another tournament that is taking place in a less politically and racially divided and dangerous area.

Part of me wonders if it's not just because of the law, but because the law's supporters have been going on about how illegals are running rampant all over the place and murdering people. They've been painting a pretty bleak picture, really.

I'm just going by what I've heard from the women on CoM who live in AZ, and claim that this law is necessary because they are living in a war zone...if it's THAT bad that we have to legalize racial profiling, then hs girls probably don't belong going there without their parents!

Well this is a tough one. With all the unrest going on there it might be unsafe. Of course they could be politicizing...
I just feel bad for the girls on the basketball team who are probably looking forward to going. If there is an illegal on the team I doubt they'll be checking papers at the freaking gym.

Honestly I think things like this are being blown way out of proportion from both sides.

i don't blame them. Even if none of their students are "illegal", I'm sure it's a diverse student body and even them questioning the status would be enough for me to stay away.
