WTF..WTF. this is so sad!

The nine-year-old boy lay on a bloodstained hospital sheet crawling with ants, staring blindly at the wall.

His family pastor had accused him of being a witch, and his father then tried to force acid down his throat as an exorcism. It spilled as he struggled, burning away his face and eyes. The emaciated boy barely had strength left to whisper the name of the church that had denounced him - Mount Zion Lighthouse.

A month later, he died.

Nwanaokwo Edet was one of an increasing number of children in Africa accused of witchcraft by pastors and then tortured or killed, often by family members. Pastors were involved in half of 200 cases of "witch children" reviewed by the AP, and 13 churches were named in the case files.

Some of the churches involved are renegade local branches of international franchises. Their parishioners take literally the Biblical exhortation, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

Yes, it says Jesus will do all this. Not Jesus told people to do all this.

Even if this were true, all your telling me is that the god that you worship is not good and IS evil (by moral standards today).

A lot of those scriptures aren't literal like pouring a cup of wrath

A lot of these scriptures are literal and are meant to be taken literally. "You shall not suffer a sorceress to live". That IS meant to be taken literally and results in a LOT of suffering in the world.

WARNING: This video is VERY disturbing!

Christians know it's wrong do torture people. That is only something that has developed through social evolution. Look at the middle ages where people were tortured and killed for owning a bible in english. Look at the video I have posted. Those are Christian people who have been taught by other Christian people about the sins of witchcraft.

unless they are misguided by someone in power with their own agenda. Like your god?

In the bible, MILLIONS of people are condemned to death and killed by god's order or in gods name. How many did 'the devil' kill? ... 10.

I would just like to add that I am not attacking anyone individually. I just think religion is detrimental to the development and evolution of social morals and peace.

Jessica: you're right there are a lot of passages(especially in the old testament where most of your passages come from) that talk about religious killings and jewish law. However, it's important to read the bible with a historical reference and not just a literal translation. I'm a christian and do not believe that everything in the bible is literal. Not to mention, the new testament specifically says not to commit murder in the name of the Lord. People misuse their religion; Christians, Muslims, etc. It's up to people who have common sense and a true faith and belief to "police" their own. The answer isn't getting rid of all religion. People are going to do horrible things. It's not "religion's" fault, it's just their excuse for why they're horrible, cruel people.

I don't think it's religion that is the problem, it's people using their religion as an excuse for their actions towards people such as hating homosexuals because of their fear that they are one. Nowhere in the bible does it say to kill or condemn others. It says he who is without sin cast the first stone and also that no one is without sin. People have no common sense these days.

How can it be alright to torture ANYONE, regardless of whether they murdered someone or tortured or raped someone. Torturing is wrong full stop. That is the point of my previous post. That torturing IS condoned in the bible. You can't say torturing is wrong, unless the person your torturing did A, B or C. That is just hypocritical.

Yes, hell is a punishment of torture. What *loving*, *caring* and *benevolent* god would condemn *anyone* to an *eternity* of torture? Surely NOTHING is so bad it is worthy of an *eternity* being tortured? I find that rather sadistic.

I have read the bible through and found it's message to be sadistic, phobic and totally unaccepting of people who don't believe what it tells them to.

Now, I don't think that decent people would follow Christianity if they saw what I saw. However, I also find that a LOT of religious people (my family included) like to just skip over the bits that they don't like.

I also think that the 10 commandments are moot in society. For e.g. I am the lord your god. I believe in no god, I do not see any evidence to support or even suggest the existence of a deity. I also see LOTS of contradictions in the history that the bible portrays and the history that science has discovered.

You shall not make yourself an idol. I guess we should never have children then, because we are idols in the eyes of our babies and so are condemning our babies to hell just by having them.

You must not murder. I see occasion (and more) where it would be acceptable for one person to kill another. Self defence being the first that comes to mind.

You must not testify falsely as a witness against your fellowman. Even if it means saving someone's life?

I'm sorry, but although you, as a Christian, may be a wholesome, loving and decent person. I find your religion is not.

One thing that I must add is that religion is not needed for morals and values. They did not come into being from a supernatural deity. Morals and values came through social evolution and the instinct to survive.

Atrocities have been committed by athiests, but never in the name of athiesm. Religion, however, brought the inquisition, the crusades, many civil wars all around the world. People were unnecessarily killed in the name of god and I find that to be unacceptable.

This is from the new testament.

1) “For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV) Clearly the Old Testament is to be abided by until the end of human existence itself. None other then Jesus said so.

2) All of the vicious Old Testament laws will be binding forever. "It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17 NAB)

3) Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17 NAB)

3b) "All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness..." (2 Timothy 3:16 NAB)

3c) "Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God." (2 Peter 20-21 NAB)

4) Jesus criticizes the Jews for not killing their disobedient children according to Old Testament law. Mark.7:9-13 "Whoever curses father or mother shall die" (Mark 7:10 NAB)

5) Jesus is criticized by the Pharisees for not washing his hands before eating. He defends himself by attacking them for not killing disobedient children according to the commandment: “He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” (Matthew 15:4-7)

6) Jesus has a punishment even worse than his father concerning adultery: God said the act of adultery was punishable by death. Jesus says looking with lust is the same thing and you should gouge your eye out, better a part, than the whole. The punishment under Jesus is an eternity in Hell. (Matthew 5:27)

7) Peter says that all slaves should “be subject to [their] masters with all fear,” to the bad and cruel as well as the “good and gentle.” This is merely an echo of the same slavery commands in the Old Testament. 1 Peter 2:18

8) “Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law" (John7:19) and “For the law was given by Moses,..." (John 1:17).

9) “...the scripture cannot be broken.” --Jesus Christ, John 10:35

Here are quotes from the bible about who to kill and under what circumstances. Quite few of which are for insignificant and petty little things. A LOT of which we find reprehensible in today's society.

Kill People Who Don't Listen to Priests

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

Kill Witches

You should not let a sorceress live. (Exodus 22:17 NAB)

Kill Homosexuals
"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

Kill Fortunetellers

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

Death for Hitting Dad

Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

Death for Cursing Parents

1) If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness. (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)

2) All who curse their father or mother must be put to death. They are guilty of a capital offense. (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

Death for Adultery

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

Death for Fornication

A priest's daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, shall be burned to death. (Leviticus 21:9 NAB)

Death to Followers of Other Religions

Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19 NAB)

Kill Nonbelievers

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

Kill False Prophets

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through. (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)

All of that just says to me that it's my responsibility to do the right thing... not capture and kill anyone else who is lying or cheating

Here are some quotes from the bible condoning torture. Reposted from my post after the one I just quoted above.

In his parables, for example, Jesus often spoke of torturing his enemies.

And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors. Matthew 18:34

And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 22:12-13

The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 24:50-51

The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. Luke 12:46-48

The devils expected Jesus to torture them. (And Jesus didn't deny that he planned to do so.)

And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? Matthew 8:29

Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. Mark 5:7

What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. Luke 8:28

God uses a rod to beat those who disobey his commandments.

If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.Psalm 89:31-2

At the end of the world, God will torture people until they want to die. But he will not let them die so that he can continue to torture them.

And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. Revelation 9:5-6

But the ultimate use of torture, a torture a greater than which can not be conceived, is hell.

The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:41-42

If thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. Matthew 18:8-9

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41

...hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 9:43-48

And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. Luke 16:22-24

The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever. Revelation 14:10-11

Lol, no, the new testament VERIFIES and ENFORCES the old testament. I will repost from one of my above posts. These are quotes from the bible.

the new testament overrides the old testament. and i agree it's not all literal and a lot of it cancels each other out, as in god will deal with it on judgement day, not other people. in matthew, mark, luke and john there is the sermon on the mount about loving your enemy and turning the other cheek and doing unto others as you'd have them do to you.

Jessica: You know scripture. Unfortunately, much of it is taken out of context(which is what people who abuse religious beliefs do too). Most of the commandments you referred to in your previous post are the 10 commandments Moses brought down from the mountain. Nowhere does it condone murder in those, and most of the examples of torture are referrences to hell and punishment for breaking commandments. In the end, Christians believe Jesus died to pay the price for all of our sins and through our belief in him and asking for forgiveness(and truly wanting to reform our actions) we are saved from those horrible punishments.

I think the issue here is that these particular Africans call themselves Christians, but are actually practicing forms of whatever previous relious beliefs they had. Most religions preach peace and love of one another. Bad people can twist it to say whatever they want.
What these people did was horrible, but imo getting rid of religion is not the answer.

You seem to have taken personal offense of my comment when it is purely my opinion and not directed at any individual.

Secondly, MOST religions and their scripture condone torture and killing for almost everything that they don't like or agree with.

Chrisitanity for example...

I just watched a disturbing 20/20 last night. In Tanzania there is an increasing demand for albino limbs by witch doctors. There is a vey high population of albinos in Tanzania. Apparently men will show up at the person with albinism's house and hold them down while the saw off arms and legs. They will threaten them not to scream or they will kill their children or loved ones. They believe the limbs will bring them fortune and good luck. Since 2007 57 Tanzanian albinos have been murdered including children and infants.

I agree the bible says one thing but by many the interpret that a different way.Your example of homosexuality is one were many folk may have what the bible says correct but putting there own spin on it too, in many cases i feel thats the problem.

[deleted account]

Its extremely sad how these children are suffering at the hands of those people who truly believe this is what the have to do..the bible is scary when its interpreted by some in the extreme were there doing this sort of stuff. If religion was banned think of the many innocent precious lives that would be saved.
