Coke pulls new Christmas cans

Well for 1- The diet can is a grey color, not white.
And 2- The diet cans CLEARLY say DIET in big black letters.

Maybe all those complaining about it can actually stop and take the time to read what they are picking up. So dumb. I really wanted one of those cans.

[deleted account]

Now I want a white can just to have one.

I can't believe it's such an issue--the coke in the white can tastes different!?!? That is something my overly picky 7 yrs old would say....does say, about his cereal--cold cereal has to be in the blue bowl, warm cereal in the red, otherwise it doesn't taste right :P It's nonsense, of course.

in fairness to coke, we were out to eat the other day and my daughter looked in the cooler, saw no red and ordered a pepsi.

anyhoo, as for the stupidity of the white can in the first place, Coke is donating 10 m over the NEXT 5 YEARS which is what....0.1% of their profits?

God I hate marketing

My husband works for Coca-Cola and he had customers swear it tasted different because the can was a different color lmao. He would have someone ask where the coke was and when he showed them the ones in the polar bear cans people said over and over that they didnt like the way it tasted in the white cans. My husband explained but no one believed it was still the SAME coke inside there. Coke was losing sales over it.

I'm having sudden visions of the film 9 to 5 when she accidentally put rat poison in the boss's coffee because the box looked almost exactly like the sugar-free sweetener.

hilarious!

When I saw that on the news I thought it was ridiculous. I mean, really? Read the cans people! Sheesh.

[deleted account]

Thanks Niki! I realized it was Polar bears after I got off the computer last night lol I think a certain percentage of the sale of the white cans goes to the polar bear fund. Isn't that usually how that sort of thing works?

Did they actually pull them? Because they are still advertising them here. Or maybe Canadians can just read better so they don't have to pull them here! (That was a joke. :)

And I'd like to know exactly HOW they think they are going to fund helping to 'save the polar bears'?! Stick a big freezer up there?!

[deleted account]

I have a 12 pack of the white can in my kitchen. I get how some may grab it by accident, even though the box is white, not gray like diet. Whatever. Pull it, don't. The proceeds still go to the pandas. Diet still tastes nasty and regular still rocks :P (that was a JOKE, by the way) /shrug.

Yea, it's hard to tell the difference at just a glance. Which is why you should pay attention to what you're putting in your shopping cart. :P

I too bought a pack just to own this evil Coke can.

And yes. I consumed the morally devistating toxic body liquid sugar goop that's going to ruin my soul too probably.

It was good :) lol

Soo... no more can debate then :) Why don't we just admit we were BOTH being asses to each other and leave it at that?
I'm seriously being sincere here.

"Your either not aware of how you come off as sounding or you think its just fine."

Pot -----> kettle.
Just saying.

[deleted account]

Your either not aware of how you come off as sounding or you think its just fine. But that is besides the point. Are we gonna debate different colored soda cans or talk about who started what and when?

[deleted account]

To someone who may not collect I absolutely see how it might be just as ridiculous, but for someone who does, its just a shame. :)

[deleted account]

I didn't say you called me an idiot, didn't even imply it "im not an idiot" is also a figure of speech. And if your meaning that I'm being rude, I'm the most polite person in the world until provoked, but thats ok, like you said its a debate. No hurt feelings on this side.
I understanding a company not wanting to chance its profits with unhappy consumers what I dont understand is why people were so mad that the color had been changed, like it has been in the past. I understand the company, I don't understand the people. That's all I was trying to get across.

So are they still supporting the polar bears, even having pulled the cans? If they're still supporting the polar bears, then I don't care if they decide to turn their cans purple. Coke is Coke. It's crap for your body anyway, regardless of the color of can it comes in! If they changed not only the can color but their whole marketing scheme, well, that would be a shame.

And really, when you think about it, being upset that Coke pulled the can because a collector might want to collect it is just as silly as them pulling it because people either thought it tasted different or didn't check what they were buying.

No, it doesn't matter, it was not bragging, I was simply pointing out that if you don't understand the science of branding and had never really studied marketing, I could understand why you couldn't see Coke's reasoning for pulling the can. It doesn't mean I think you are an idiot and I never called you one. Seeing the reasoning and agreeing with it are two totally different things. All I was trying to do is point out WHY Coke would have made the decision. But whatever. I wasn't trying to be rude. Which is more than can be said for some.

[deleted account]

Does it really matter....seriously. No I have never been interested in marketing my line of work is nursing and in home health care. But that doesn't mean I don't understand what they are/were trying to do...one thing I dont like to brag about.. im not an idiot :)
Do you really think pulling this can because of the color change was justifiable? Honest question.

So you have studied marketing then? if that is the case, I do apologise for my assumption.

[deleted account]

Jodi we half the laws we have because people can't be happy living their own lives they have to interfere with others.

[deleted account]

Don't try to assume you have any idea what I have studied sweetie, im not one of these idiots that goes bragging about EVERYTHING I know, or dont know for that matter.
If you can't see how stupid it was to complain that much then I can't help you. They do this every year, every year a new marketing scheme is hatched to sell their product, but turn a can white and "oh my god we can't tell the difference" is beyond idiocy.

Yes, Jenny, but that's also the reason we have half the laws we do. Because people are idiots and common sense isn't so common.

And that's okay if it doesn't make sense to you. You've probably never studied marketing. But it does actually make good marketing sense for the company to have made the decision it made. And I was simply trying to point that out. That's all. Just because I understand why they didn't doesn't mean I think people shouldn't be so blind.

LMAO....."where the fuck" is a figure of speech. You don't know me at all well if you think if I swear it means I'm upset about something.

[deleted account]

No honey but you started swearing, in my experience that only happens when someone feels they have nothing else to say.

I never said or implied that I more intelligent than anyone, I also know for a fact that I am not the only person who shops like this, every mother I see in the store shops like this. And I have time management skills, I can be in and out of a store in 30 minutes top, regardless of how I shop.

I just think it was ridiculous that so many people complained to the point that Coke pulled it, I have never heard of that happening, I LOVE the Coke products and was really looking forward to having one of these cans, and now its gone. Regardless of how anyone shops it just doesn't make sense to me to pull it. Thats all.

I'm actually not getting upset over this at all. Not sure why you think that. It's a debate, sweetheart, get over it. Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I'm upset over it. Sheesh.

Of course I sometimes grab things from the shelf that I always purchase and don't read the entire label. If I did that for every single item I purchased every time I did my grocery shop, I'd be there all day. If it is the same thing I have always purchased, I don't read the label at all. I recognise it. It doesn't mean I don't care what I am putting in my or my family's bodies.

And for the record, in the past, you would never have HAD to double check you didn't pick up Diet Coke, because it was never in a red can......just as regular Coke was never in a white/grey can.

Just because you would read it, doesn't mean everyone would. And that doesn't make you more intelligent than them either. It just means you do things differently.

[deleted account]

And do you see how upset your getting over this? Are you really that bored that complaining about a can is the highlight of your night?

[deleted account]

Umm yes Jodi I do. One I hate diet soda so Ill double check to make sure I don't grab it. And two I like to know what I'm feeding myself and my family so again... I read.

It being pulled ruined it for those of us who might collect coke products, thats how the fuck it ruined it.

Do you not bother to read what you buy or do you just automatically assume its ok or the same thing you've been buying. I honestly don't know a single person that doesn't read what the buy that they will be ingesting later.

And how the fuck is Coke pulling the can "ruining the rest of us"?

Personally, I don't think it is a big deal either way, I certainly don't see it as *ruining* anyone. But I do understand why they have made the decision to pull the can.

Jodi - posted on 12/02/2011

So you read the entire label of everything you purchase at the supermarket every time you purchase that item?

[deleted account]

Yes, but with those who may not be able to read.... there is still that fact that the two cans are a different color, read or not that at least should aid them... and another thing im not taking about someone who cant read, im taking about those who are just in so much of a hurry they can't be bothered to read the labels. Like it or not it is a ridiculous thing to be bitching about. To the point that Coke had to pull it, really? Way to ruin it for the rest of us.

Well just because you don't do something shouldn't make you so close minded to see that someone else may not and be able to understand the confusion it could cause.

It is never done purposefully Beautiful but if you are used to buying something that you always buy that is marketed a certain way you tend to just grab it without reading it especially if one is red and one is grey. Red coke is always regular and grey is always diet. So it isn't so hard to realize that you would just grab the lighter colored can and assume it is diet.

They don't even look that similar, really. If the writing was the same, I could see the complaint, but on the Diet Coke, it's vertical and on the white cans, it's horizontal.

[deleted account]

Its really quite simple.... READ what you plan on putting into your body. Is that really so hard to do, is it asking too much of people. I don't think so... but anyway, ridiculous to me still.

Becky - posted on 12/02/2011

It's a bit annoying because the coke cans now look very similar to my husband's beer cans. But, I can read what's written on the can, so it's all good. :) Plus, I can't drink Coke anymore anyways. (diet is gross, I'll just take a pass on the whole soft drink thing until baby is born!)

[deleted account]

Well lol im sorry but to me that is just ridiculous, when I go into the store I don't just walk through grabbing anything without looking at it first. Its seems kinda lazy to me for people to just rely on color coding especially when its something your putting into your body. That's all. :)

I know what a Diet Coke can looks like. And they have used the white/grey as part of its branding. The reason people can mistake it is because their marketing for the brand has worked. People see the colour and ASSUME it is diet coke.

When it comes to shopping for brand, yes, people shop with their eyes closed. They blindly reach for familiarity. That's why branding works.
