Computer purchase (not a debate...just need advice :)

[deleted account] ( 20 moms have responded )

Ok, I may be buying this computer tomorrow. It's a Gateway and I've never owned a Gateway before but it's in my price range (with my fantastic BJ's membership :). I don't know a whole lot about computers, except for how to use them....but as for internal parts? The only thing I really pay attention to is memory. My HP Pavillion has 1GB RAM and 225 GB Hard Drive. Memory wise, the Gateway blows my current computer out of the water (4GB RAM and 1TB Hard Drive). So....here's the link to the exact computer. I'm pretty much just looking for opinions on whether Gateways are good computers, long lasting, good performance, etc. I don't play any RPG games like WoW or anything, so I don't need a super computer. All I do is email and FB (with a little Frontierville on the side lol...ok, maybe more than a little Frontierville lol). Anyone who doesn't like Gateway, what would you suggest? I have about a $600 budget plus about $200 for a monitor (will be my first flat screen, yay!). Ok, thoughts? Thanks in advance :)

This is a great computer its a core i, which is the only TRUE dual core, it actually does use two processors properly unlike other so called dual core processors. This computer will not slow down due to photos, the harddrive is huge, and so is the ram, I would be shocked if anyone can fill a 1Tb harddrive with just photos, those that actually fill these types of computers are dling movies, music, and video games. Its a great price and a great buy.

I'm looking at purchasing a laptop for my course sometime soon. I was looking at a laptop with the same specs as the one you are looking at and it's going to cost me $1000 minimum.
So not that i know the company but it looks like a good deal.

That's the same memory and ram as mine and I find it great for my needs. I don't play games but I do download a lot of movies and stuff. Mine is dual core which means it if faster when doing a couple of things at once.

I would recommend getting an external hard drive when you have the cash spare, and keep all your photos, videos ect on it, even with a lot of memory on your computer it will slow quickly when you start to fill it up.

What operating program does it have? windows 7?

That's true about everybody's experience being different. And it can vary from product to product. Who knows -- the Acer desktops might be fine. But my husband hated his Acer laptop. He now has a Toshiba and loves it. I usually go for a Dell for a desktop, but have also heard good things about HP. That's a good tip about tigerdirect -- I haven't thought to look there. Thanks!

Gateways notoriously have problems. I would not suggest it. I've been in th IT business for almost 30 years and I actually work for HP. HP pc's are good but expensive. Go to www.tigerdirect.com and look there for Asus or Acer. Both very reliable and good pricing and tigerdirect has great customer service if anything ever goes wrong.

Edited to add: everyone's experience is different. Seems like some don't like acer but our experience has been good. Gateway.....bad. But that's just me.

Hm. Good to know. It'll be a little while before we can get a new one anyway -- I want to see if I get an income tax refund this year first. So by the time we're ready to shop, there will probably be some different deals on.

Krista, that computer you're looking at getting...that's the one I just replaced. It worked great for the first year and a half and then it started giving me problems. In the 4 years I've had it, I can't tell you how many times I've had to run the restore........maybe the newer ones with Windows 7 are better? Or maybe I just got a dud.

OMG, our old computer sounded like a jet engine! Seriously loud! It was like the fan was on all the time in full on BLAST mode. I tried taking it apart and cleaning it but nothing would calm it down. This new one is soooooo quiet, can't even tell it's on.

I've heard the same thing about Acer laptops. But I have a friend who bought the Acer desk top and she likes it. Then again, this friend only turns hers on maybe once a week lol I have another friend who bought an eMachine and likes it but she doesn't understand that the particular one she bought, she can never change. Everything is integrated and there are no slots to add memory so what she has is all she'll ever have with that machine.

Yeah, flat screens are so much nicer, aren't they?

Definitely don't get an Acer. My husband had an Acer laptop, and it was the shits. I've heard good things about Gateway.

We'll probably be replacing our computer in the next few months. It's 6 years old and the fan is dying -- it currently sounds like a cow trying to give birth. Fortunately, we don't have to buy a new monitor, so that will keep our purchase price low.

We're contemplating this one: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/hewl...

Oh and Nikki, I got an external hard drive too. It's got 500GB of space so hopefully it will hold all of my pictures and then some.

[deleted account]

I ended up buying the Gateway and so far I LOVE IT! My memory has quadrupled and my hard drive space????? Ohhhh I'm so happy with it! I'd forgotten how smoothly a computer can run lol Now, I just need to get used to the keyboard. It's smaller than my old one and I keep mistyping. Thanks for the input girls :) Oh, and I bought a new monitor too. A Samsung 20" for $119. I also got it at BJ's. The ones at Wal Mart were around the same price but smaller and brands I've never heard of (except for Acer, I've heard of Acer before). Flat screen monitor....where have you been all my life!?!?!?!? LOL

it really doesnt matter what brand of computer it is, all the parts are made by the same company. The brand is just the people who assemble it. Duel core is outdated technology, tri-core is the new "best" when it comes to computer processors. as soon as everyone has one of those processors, they'll start selling the better ones they already have invented....if it can be a dual core, it can have as many as they desire, nanotechnology allows that :)

I don't know all that much about computers or Gateway, but what you are willing to spend is about what we paid for our computer and it works well. We basically use ours for email, Facebook, Internet searching in general, and my husband has a couple of programs for work where he can view his scheduling, etc. It sounds like a good deal for you!

[deleted account]

Thanks girls :) And Nikki, YES! I was already going to look at an external hard drive to keep my pictures on because I have a LOT! Thanks for the suggestions :)

Ok I just got the page up, was having trouble loading it. I think it's a good deal, it also has dual core and windows 7 which is good.
