That's insane! Like you said, Meghan....no one can ever know for certain what they would do in a situation like that BUT I CAN say that I can't imagine being able to do that. AMAZING!

When your adrenaline is going and survival is at stake people can do things they would never think possible. Saw a show once where a scrawny 14yr old boy lifted a car that had pinned his grandfather down after it rolled off of a jack while he was working underneath it. So if my arm was pinned down and I smelled rotting flesh I'd probably be hacking away at it. I'd rather die bleeding out trying to be rescued than die sitting there knowing I had no chance.

I didn't watch the video but if its the most recent case in the news..

then the man knew his arm was beyond saving and that the infection that was eating the dead hand could possibly kill him if it advanced to the remaining portion of his arm.

Could I do it? Yes. There comes a point when logic over rides your squeamishness. When you KNOW if you don't do this then you'll never get a chance to tell your family all those things you wish you had said or that last good bye.

Self amputation, you ARE going to cut an artery - but in the two cases I know of, the arms had been pinned for so long the artery had been pinched off. You should also have tied a tourniquette before starting.

AND if murphys law kicked in and someone waltzed in the door 5 minutes after you cut off your decayed arm... you are out NOTHING. With decay set in - it can't be saved.

AND if you managed to cut off your perfectly good arm and help arrived - then chances are it could be reattached.

That's true Jodi. I bet there is a certain part of your brain that just takes over and you would have no control over it, wouldn't feel the pain. The human body is amazing and we have no idea just what we are capable of.

He did say he was starting to smell the flesh rotting, so I guess his survival instinct kicked in.

I have heard of similar situations before:

I think it is easy to sit here, being so safe, and say I could never do it, but the human will to live is an amazingly powerful thing. I am honestly not sure if I would have waited longer or not, I don't think that is a question anyone could logically answer when it really is an instinctual decision.

I really don't think I could do it. Maybe if my child was hanging from a tree with a bear trying to get at him and the bear said "cut off your arm or I'm going to eat your baby" then I'd have to give it a try. But if it was just me out there, yup, I really doubt I could do it.

I do want to know one thing though. How freakin' large was that boiler to actually have managed to pin this guy? Jeez.

I didn't watch this particular video as I've seen it on the news a few times now..

He did cut into arteries/veins. Fortunately he did still have his wits about him and fixed his tourniquet before he bled out, which he almost did.

I would have waited longer than he did, but eventually I would have cut something off. This is why I always have my cell phone in my bra or my pocket ;D only need 1 arm to dial 911.

I honestly don't know what I would do!!! I can't say that I wouldn't but Murphey's law is usually against me LOL, If I did hack off my arm I am pretty sure 5 minutes laster someone would waltz through the door...so I would probably fight it until I died..sucks being stubborn

I could never do it. Not only am I a complete wussy, but there'd be a part of me thinking someone would come rescue me any minute now. Plus, there's always the chance that you could go wrong and cut into a vein/arterie and bleed out before you could even finish the amputation.
