It looks like they are finally going to be doing away with this policy. I personally cannot wait for it to be repealed and I wish they had done so a lot sooner. As a matter of fact I don't think it should ever have been implemented in the first place.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Mullen) stated before Congress that he personally believed the policy violated a core principle of the US military: integrity. He said that requiring servicemembers to lie as part of their duty to their country violated their integrity as soldiers and the military's integrity itself. He said, in other words, that the current policy is dishonorable. I agree with him.

Is there anyone on here who doesn't?

What's up with this??

Quote: 59% of Americans agree that "homosexuals" ought to be able to serve in the U.S. military. But 70 percent believe that "gays and lesbians" ought to be able to serve in the military. So what are we to make of these confused Americans?

I could care less who is screwing who. There are guys & lesbians in every work sector out there, why should the military be so different if these men & women are doing their job to protect their country?

You don't necessarily have to use missionary, Michelle. This is the GOP we're talking about, so as long as two wetsuits and a dildo are involved, you're golden.

The Republican party is NOTHING like what it used to be. They used to be very much about government staying out of peoples' lives. Now? They're practically under your bed telling you what positions you can use.

No, I don't think so. I think some of the positions conservatives took decades ago (like Goldwater's pragmatism on homosexuality which was pretty much the same as Reagan's) would be frowned upon in today's GOP. Nixon would probably be considered a flaming liberal on many issues. For example under Nixon social spending came to exceed defense spending for the first time. He approved massive increases in funding for Great Society programs such as the Model Cities program and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He supported changes in spending policies such as automatic cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients and other entitlement programs. Federal spending for the arts quadrupled during his administration.

Seems to me that "conservatives" were a lot more progressive a few decades ago than they are now.

The quote is a shorten version of a quote made by Barry Goldwater in which he said, "You don't have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight."

I agree Dana will be hard for awhile and the adjustment will be slammed with problems amongst unaccepting soldiers. I mean it was when minorities were let into the military, but no great change occurrs without pain, sacrifice, and mountains to climb.

I think it's about time but, I also think it will be a rough row to hoe. I think there will be plenty in the military who don't welcome this and will make it really hard on gays.

[deleted account]

I agree with him. And I think that it's awful that our military isn't held to at least as high a standard as business and public schools, who get in trouble if they fire/refuse to hire/refuse to admit an openly gay person. It's ass-backwards.

Besides, what would a chickenhawk like Chambliss know about what goes on in the military anyway?

About Time!!!!

I hate to admit this but I live in the state of Georgia and good ole Saxby Chambliss is my Represenative. BELIEVE me I worked my butt off during the last election to try to get that ass out of office. I volunteered for Democrat Jim Martin who ran against him. Jim Martin is a great guy, retired from the military and a lawyer who specializes in childrens rights. He almost won and it went to a run off vote but unfortunately a slight majority voted that ass back into office.

Both his Democratic opponents in the last 2 elections, Martin and Cleland are retired military men and he attacked them with a vehment nasty smear campaign claiming that they were unpatriotic. Both served in Vietnam and Cleland is disabled and in a wheel chair due to his Vietnam service. Saxby got 4 different exemptions from serving in Vietnam. Instead he stayed home and went to college while they risked their lives for service of this country and he has the nerve to question their patriotism based on the fact that they are Democrats who agree with Obama.

That man knows NOTHING about the military and has never served one second of his life.He would due well to keep his mouth shut and let soldiers speak about military service and he can focus on passing BS laws that help out his son who is a lobbyist for the biggest farming industry.

BTW my husband who has been in the US Army for 10 years..drinks and has a full sleeve tattoo on one arm and 2 other tattoos on his other arm.

Most soldiers drink, most have tattoos, some already cheat on their wives...just go take a look at the military spouses with children community on COM because you will read a crap load of posts about spouses cheating...getting rid of DADT will not open up the flood gates for immoral activities and it is mostly the older Republican right wingers on the verge of retirement that have an issue with gays in the military. Most of the soldiers I know between the ages of 18 and 35 already know of at least one openly gay person in the military and they could careless.

Ah man, you guys have been hanging out with gays?!?!? Now i'm going to have to send you out to be de-gayed...damn.

Yeah, I thought gays were the ultimate recruiters. That's why kids can't be exposed to them right because they would inevitably join the throngs of queens.

Oh, and a gay friend of mine wrote this little gem:

I’ve always had an issue with the right’s assertion that recruitment will decline if gays are allowed to serve openly.
It’s as if they have never heard of our legendary recruiting abilities or something.

Well, Saxby Chambliss has provided us with our entertainment for the day:

Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said that if they began to loosen one restriction, others might unravel, leading to a louche atmosphere brimming with “alcohol use, adultery, fraternization and body art.”

Oh noes! Can you even imagine?! Up until now, men in the military NEVER drank, got tattoos, or visited whorehouses while on R&R! If this kind of stuff starts up, it'll be all the fault of teh gheys!

I agree as well. Though I think the homosexual lifestyle is morally wrong, it shouldn't prevent anybody from being in the military or having any other type of job. There are so many other people who are morally wrong and are not persecuted like homosexuals. Its hypocritical. And I know I will probably face some backlash for my view, but hey, its a debate board. =) But to answer the main question, DADT should be done away with.
