Downloading media for free

I'm kind of curious as to what others' opinions are on downloading media- movies, tv shows, music, software- without paying. Is it inevitable due to the level of technology everyone has access to nowadays? Or should the government/other organizations keep trying to control it?

I do it all the time. Stuff rich "artists" who make more in a day than I do in a year.

I download a ton of music. I still buy CD's for the bands I support though. I prefer to give them my money at live shows. I buy a shirt at every show I'm at. So they get $75-$150 from my partner AND myself instead of $10ish for a CD. I also buy alot of concert DVD's so they get a cut that way too.

Most of musicians (on major labels) profits come from merchandise and ticket sales, they make very little off itunes/cds. Not a big deal. Unless its metallica. lol.

Seriously, I think that movie stars and musicians are being paid far too much as it is. They are not going broke by us downloading music, whereas I would certainly be broke if I bought all of the CDs and DVDs I've gotten for free online.

I had downloaded a shit load of music for free. Most of it was music I had purchased previously and wanted on my computer without the hassle of going & digging up lost cds.

some of it was more current stuff that I was considering buying.

Now we find sites to listen to music for free then if we like it - we buy it. my kids can earn music by doing extra chores.

I watch shows I miss (and forget to sky+) on the channels website which is free and legal - I pay my tv license.

I never download movies or music from anything but legal sites. I think that if I want to watch a movie or listen to a cd I should pay for it because people deserved to be paid for their hardwork!

IMO it is part of the gov's job to control this - otherwise we are expecting people to work for free which is not fair. Also theft is theft - if somebody was to walk into a store and steal a cd or dvd they would be arrested, just because the movie or music they are stealing is online they are still stealing it!

I stream movies and television. It is technically legal. The people who upload the content may be doing so illegally ;) but I'm in the clear lol. If I didn't do so from the criminal uploads I still wouldn't be paying to support the movie industry so I really don't see any harm, other wise I'd just be waiting for it to hit free broadcast. It isn't cheating them out of any money because I would still refuse to pay $15 to see a movie that's probably going to be total crap anyway.

Television, I usually stream from the networks site so they can get in their advertising, if the network site is a piece of crap that only has a couple recent episodes available, I may go ahead and stream it from an unauthorized site.

I pay for music, because I listen to mostly indie artists and feel the need to support them. So I buy their itunes, I buy their merchandise, I see them live, same for comedians.

But other than music I don't download anything, streaming only. I don't want to own this crap, I'll never use it again and I probably won't enjoy it the first time ;)

Many TV shows are there for free use family doesn't pay for cable, because I have to have the internet for my job, and we can watch more then enough tv for free on there. My husband and I used to be guilty of the occasional movie download, but we don't do it anymore...we have BB online, and get plenty of movies to watch through them...I think it's probably really bad to download stuff for raises the price for everyone else...I've never downloaded music or software for free...
