So I went to the OBGYN again today for my weekly ultrasound and check up. I'm 1cm dilated (YAY!) and he said that when I finally go into labor I can have a sundae! I HAVEN'T HAD A SUNDAE IN YEARS! I couldn't have one before because of my pancreatitis and now that I have GD I can't have one because of the sugars. But he said that I could have one the day I go into labor. I did a little dance in the office and he laughed. :P

So, I just had to share with you ladies. Hopefully I'll pop soon. :)

Sorry, Kate...but yep, pretty sure it is prodromal labor. Sadly, it can happen, on and off, for days. While it may not be making significant cervical change, it's not entirely useless; it is "priming the pump", so to speak.

Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear =(

There's not a whole lot I can suggest that you probably haven't already tried. What seems to work best for most women is soaking in the tub. Tylenol, or tylenol pm (benadryl) can sometimes help a bit as well. I did this a bit at the end - what worked best for me was drinking one beer IN the bathtub...it usually bought me at least a few hours of sleep.

A last resort is to go in to the hospital for what we refer to as "therapeutic rest". For women who are both too early to induce, but contracting painfully without cervical change, we have given them an IV (which can sometimes, by itself, knock those pesky suckers out), as well as some type of narcotic, such as morphine, dilaudid, or stadol. It usually stops those ctx's (at least for a while), and allows you to sleep (although you are in a hospital bed on a monitor). You would be able to go home after 4-8 hours. I know your aversion to the hospital, but just know it's an option if you truly get desperate.

I'm sorry, Kate - I know just how much this sucks. I wish I had better answers. I can pray to the labor Gods that your water spontaneously breaks (and the Catholic in me will hit up St Gerard - the patron saint of motherhood - as well)!

((((hugs))))

Mandy: Oh, I'm a natural birthin' Momma. No epidurals for me. Actually, I really can't have one. Too much of an infection risk (I have an immune disorder).

Hey Kate.
When you're out today, pick up some Evening Primrose oil pills.
When you get home, shove two of them up there as close to your cervix as you can get, and take two by mouth. Do this at bedtime or when you lay down for a few hours.
This will help to soften your cervix which will help those labour pains do their job. Also start knocking back as much red raspberry leaf tea as you can stomach.
Go for a walk!!!
Have sex.
Play with your nipples.
Have a bath.
Go to the local pool and float.
Good Luck today.
:)

Fuck waiting until tomorrow. I'm going back today for pain relief and sleep. Apparently 4 days of labor pains and 37 weeks is still too early to induce. I hate this.

I'm calling the doctor in the morning and moving up my appointment. I need some sleep and a pain-free day so I'm hoping he'll admit me tomorrow night, give me some pain relief and a sleeping pill. Or maybe I'll luck out and he'll induce me. Either way, I need a break. I can't do this any more. *sigh*

I swear, Mary. I have no idea what we would do without you. I mean, you're already awesome and wise and very decorative, even without all of your medical knowledge, but man, oh man, it is SO good to have our very own Batnurse coming to the rescue!

Honestly, as long as the baby is moving well, and nothing else has significantly changed, I'd wait...unless you are out-of-your-mind-miserable...in which case, page him this weekend. Sometimes, it's not just about your physical discomfort, but your emotional state (and sanity) as well. Sleep deprivation makes it a hell of a lot harder to cope with anything.

So, should I step up the appointment to Monday or wait it out? I mean...I dunno.

...I like dilaudid, though. They gave me that for my pancreatitis and it works great. Didn't know I could have that while pregnant.

Another update, ladies.

Day FUCKING 3 of irregular contractions. I get them most frequently when lying down on my side (don't get that at all) so sleeping has been challenging to say the least. No bloody show since Wednesday night, no fluid leakage, and I doubt there's been a change in my cervix. I'm still refusing to go to the hospital unless I'm dying or something. :P

My next appointment is Wednesday morning and I don't know if I should bump it up to Monday or just tough it out. I've been looking this up on the internet and prodromal labor seems to fit the bill. However it says it usually only lasts 12-24 hours. So I'm not sure what I should do...I'm tired and sore and ready for these contractions to stop or have this baby.

Just got back home. I waited until about 5 to go to the hospital. Probably should have gone in sooner. I've been having contractions all day, still am, but I'm only 1cm dilated and my cervix is still pretty thick. The lovely nurse (sarcasm here, she was a real bitch) said his head isn't far enough down either. Yesterday his head was engaged but today it's not. Don't know how that happened. Anyway. They said if I went into labor on my own they wouldn't try to stop it BUT because I'm not far enough along they won't help it along either. I think they need to make up their damn minds. The doctor (whom I never saw and wasn't my normal OBGYN) tried to give me Ambien (because I'm "obviously exhausted") and a shot of demerol wanted to send me home. I refused both and went home. I'm already on sleeping pills and I can't sleep because of the constant pain I'm in PLUS the damn contractions. I didn't want the demerol because it probably wouldn't have done anything and I didn't feel like drugging myself.

I'm pissed. I'm frustrated...and I feel like an idiot. I just want this to be over with.

Kate that's great news, I agree with Erin, it certainly sounds like early labour, your close to the end now and then you get to finally meet your fabulous son for the first time :-)

Geez, after I had my kids, the first thing that was brought to me was a coffee lol I wanted it so bad as I disallowed myself coffee while pregnant. It was soooo good!

You sure your not in the beginning stqges of labour? I know this might be tmi but I started having alot of bm's...atleast I was at home and didn't poop on the delivery bed! My contractions were semu irregular...I would seem to have them every 12 minutes, then I would get up move around...they would stop....then start up again. That was on my second baby....with the first, my water broke....not with the second baby so it was much harder to tell I was in labour, until it was almost to late! Lol...

Update: I was having contractions at one point an a bit of bloody show but they stopped before I went to bed. Then throughout the night they started up again but weren't regular. Now I'm having brown show (?), chills but no fever, and cramping. And I'm hungry. I did not have a good night ladies. :(
