Ok, so I literally just got home from McDonalds...and yes, I got my son a happy meal...with the toy. Yup...I am a bad momma...LOL....This is the first time we have gone in about 8 months or so.

How often do you frequent fast food joints, is it ok occassionally? Or just never! (this includes pizza places also)

I'm also surprised at how people think only McDonald's, Hungry Jacks and the like are fast food. Fast food is any food that you get ordering from a counter and comes in packaging. So even that Chinese takeaway from a restaurant is fast food.

I thought you guys meant to McDonalds once a week! lol

I guess I consider fast food anything from a burger joint or something similar.

I don't count pizza as fast food nor do I count Subway as fast food.

If we go it's usually because we are stuck out longer than anticipated. Going out to eat for us is more like a family diner than fast food. I just found out from someone wendy's changed fries and doesn't have oranges anymore. Not sure how long ago that happened. thought oranges were a newish thing.

I stay at home and we have a garden every year that provides most of our food. Since I am at home it's easier and faster for me to make it here than drag kids out to force them to eat there. My poor daughter. We went to a burger king a few months ago and i told her what the options were to eat. she was less than impressed. chicken nuggets? ugh. ground cow? no thanks. Finding food for her was a waste. Think kids ended up just eating fries and looking at the other food like it was poison. and they were out of juice. Pop? oh hell no. my daughter thinks it's poisonous. She was like....um...just a water, then. i was actually pretty proud of all of us that we don't eat out so often.

and subway.....nitrates!!! yikes. look up lunchmeats and nitrates and cancer. oh the joys. If you're in a bind, eat out. Won't kill you every now and then. But i sure wouldn't on a regular basis - even once a week is too much for us - if you're concerned about your health.

My husband jokes that he may as well not eat mcdonalds and just flush the money in the toilet because it upsets his stomach so much he just craps it out right away - like within ten minutes. poor guy.

My Definition of "Fast Food" is "Any restaurant without white table cloths, cloth napkins, and a wine list."

Based on that definition, we eat fast food about 1-3 times a week. During the school year, my son gets an order of fries from McD's or Chick-fil-a every Monday during the mad dash between school and Taekwondo class. It's easy to eat in the car, high carb to give him energy for taekwondo, and tides him over till dinner without filling him up.

During Baseball season, we have Pizza for dinner with our team after weeknight games--once a week there.

And my husband and I have a date almost every week where we grab Quizno's or Subway for a picnic after a long motorcycle ride. Sometimes we'll stop in at this really good, REALLY BAD, burger place, or even Applebees or some place like that. We rarely hit the high-end, non-fast food places for regular dates (too pricey), and I'm not cooking.

I don't think fast food is "evil" as long as it is eaten in moderation and is only a small part of an otherwise healthy diet. My son and I are both underweight, but healthy, and my husband is still fairly fit--no six pack anymore, but he's not carrying a keg around either. I still think he's hot for his age ;) so over all, I do not think our frequent fast food consumption is hurting us because I do cook healthy meals most days.

Well, my definition of 'fast food' is junk food that you get as a meal by ordering at a counter. And typically that fast food has fillers, nitrites and nitrates, loads of sodium, minimal nutrition, low-grade meat, MSG, trans fats, corn syrup, is processed, etc.

I've had Subway tuna. No way does it come from fillet of albacore, and I felt like I got two days worth of my sodium requirement. To me, it doesn't matter if it's better than Mc'ds. It's still junk on a relative spectrum.

Albacore tuna has mercury levels so high that they have actually put a cap on how much we are supposed to eat (once a week TOPS)

I have to agree with Kelly also, any restaurant or place that sells food that doesn't have a wine list or table cloths I pretty much consider fast food.

We go as needed; I am sure there are people on here who say never, but that is just not realistic for us. For instance, it has probably been about 3 weeks since we had gone, but this weekend we were literally NEVER home, so my whole family ate WAY TOO MUCH fast food. The real kicker is is that my son really only likes french fries! :)

I'm pretty sure that it's the other way around- nitrite is broken down to nitrate. Humans don't fix nitrogen. Bacteria do- we can get nitrates from vegetables but not in enough concentrations to be harmful. Nitrates and nitrites can both be environmental toxins and can be harmful. Nitrites are definitely toxic.

i just have to say something about the nitrates. nitrates are in everything. when our body processes foods like vegetables, and grains it turns the naturally occuring nitrates into nitrites. you get nitrites from veggies folks.

Well, there's a difference between real albacore and regular canned tuna. And then canned tuna filled with extra salt. I was just making a point that fast-food 'healthy food' isn't all that. I really don't care if you eat it. In my opinion, Subway is just as icky as any other fast food.

[deleted account]

Who the heck is talking about 'fillet of albacore'? It's canned tuna. The same thing I eat at home.....

my definition is any type of food not prepared at home. theres a nice little deli around here that makes AWESOME sandwiches with organic bread, and yummy deli meats, but i still consider them fast food. i didn't make it myself.

All this talk of junk, nitrates, and sodium has me craving a burger. I may just have to make a run to In-N-Out. Thanks guys :P

I guess it's one good thing about my daughter being picky. Sge won't eat typical kid-favorite fast food. No pizza, burgers, grilled cheese, etc. If we go out it's either chicken or if we go to our favorite mexican place, rice and beans.

So Marina, when you posted the OP, were you trying to gauge who had ordered UNHEALTHY fast food, or all fast food? I interpreted it to mean the unhealthy type, but perhaps I was wrong.

[deleted account]

P.s. The line is the ordering from a counter and food in packaging. Fast doesn't always mean bad.

My local Chinese is 85% counter, 15% dine in... Not far off being a Noodle Box actually.

[deleted account]

Well, thinking about my local Chinese, I would actually consider it fast food even if we ate in. The reason is because the restaurant itself is more a front for a fast food joint, if that makes sense. The food that comes out of the place is just like you'd get at the fast food Chinese at the shopping center. I have been to proper Chinese restaurants who's primary business is dining in with little to no takeaway, and the quality of the food is much higher than the takeaway joint. But even the dining in one has it's fast food section for higher turnover.

If you think of someplace like Noodle Box, you can eat in there too, but it's still fast food. Counter service and food in a box.

See, the term 'fast food' has such negative connotations for many, but it's not necessarily equivalent to bad food. To me, it's just like takeaway... food that is ordered and comes in packaging. That's it. Some are worse than others, but not all fast food is unhealthy.

Jodi - posted on 06/04/2011

So Donna, when you go an eat IN the Chinese restaurant, do you consider it fast food too? Because Many Chinese restaurants are proper restaurants making things from scratch just like I would at home when I cook Chinese.....

So where does one draw the line?

We don't eat any other fast food as a family (an incidental benefit of vegetarianism), but my husband does get cravings for micky-d's and taco bell once in a while...I don't care if he gives in to them here and there...

We never go to McDonalds (eww gag lol), but I do take my kids to a taco place about once a week. It's fantastic food, and fairly healthy. I get a taco salad (in a baked shell bowl, not fried) and my kids get quesadillas and beans and rice. Everything comes in vegetarian or vegan choices as well.
We normally alternate every second week between pizza and our local burger joint.

We have Maccas if its a last minute thing. Coz my husband and I cant stand it, so Maccas is normally only something we would get the kids if we were dropping them off at Nannas for the night(or she would pick up some takeout with them). Otherwise our once a week takeout meal is Subway.

[deleted account]

There is no way a tuna sandwich w/ lettuce is worse for you than a grease filled cheesburger and fries.

Granted, I know the nutritional content of iceberg lettuce is non-existant, but at least it IS roughage.

[deleted account]

I've never seen a Subway with a drive-thru. If they had them, I'd probably go there instead of McD's when I want a quick meal.

We go about once every six months- because my husband wants to take the kids. And I sulk the entire time, knowing what they're consuming. *shivers*

But at least they have fun in the play area.

Is it OK occasionally? I'm not so sure it is, but I go along with it because my husband already thinks I'm off the deep end on the subject of nutrition.

[deleted account]

A few times a month for lunch. I live in a small town/suburb and go to the city once a week. While there we attend a toddler music class and run various errands that can't be done where we live. Because we are generally 'in town' all day and we have to eat, we end up at McDonald's, Wendy's or Chick-fil-A. I've been trying to make a point of going elsewhere...like Jason's Deli or bringing sandwiches and finding a park with playground to eat. I cook almost every night at home, but my husband's weakness is pizza. So we order that about once a month.

I don't have a problem with my daughter having it that often (she generally eats a handful of fries and a chocolate milk), because the rest of the time she eats well and I don't keep junk in the house.

I'd say on average, maybe twice a month. Some months we don't at all, other months, like when we're travelling, we do frequently. Usually, it's when we're out over a mealtime. We rarely actually intentionally go out for fast food. And we almost never order pizza anymore, we buy the frozen ones from the grocery store. Much cheaper. Once in a while I'll order from Boston Pizza as a treat, but that's not actually fast food.
However, I do have a pretty bad Timmy's habit, so if you're counting that, we go for fast food quite a bit more. But we don't generally get donuts and pastries - I get a sandwhich, Cole gets a bagel with cream cheese, and Zach gets a yogurt and berries. And I get my horrible for me iced cappuccino!

I looooove fast food. I have a french fry craving at least twice a week. Sometimes I'll stop on the way home from running errands and get the chicken kids meal with fries and the kids soda... go home, eat the fries and soda and let my daughter have the chicken and give her some fruit and milk with it.

The one place we frequent a couple times a week is our local Vietnamese Vegan place. It's one of those restaurants that isn't fast food, but it's fast and does takeout and delivery, and only has a couple tables inside. Probably doesn't count.

[deleted account]

We usually do fast food once a week or once a fortnight as well. I like getting the Brodie's family feast (a whole roast chicken, large peas, large steamed carrots and roasted potatoes. And a large gravy which only my husband eats).

Just because it's fast, doesn't mean it's crap. I love sushi and Nando's (grilled chicken place) too.

I love Atkins. Since giving birth to my son I've lost THREE dress sizes (he's 4 months old) and I'm the smallest I've been since I got married 8 years ago. I'm still losing weight and I'm loving it.

So, hell yea I'll stop at McDonald's and get a double cheeseburger. I pull the bun off (no bread at all) and get a diet coke and I'm a happy camper. I do miss fries, however. And onion rings *drool*.

But we like to do take away Chinese a lot of those times, not sure that is quite the same. But we do McDonalds on the odd occasion for breakfast on those cold football mornings when I have an hour to kill waiting for the game to start.

I think we might hit up either Chick Fil A or McDonald's once a month, but here's the kicker - we don't usually eat there. If the weather is crappy, we will eat lunch at home, and then just go there for the play yard. I usually buy a small iced tea for me, and that's it. The girl could really care less about the food at those places; at 2 1/2, she's all about the slides!
