Fears (not a debate)

My daughter has recently developped a fear of flies. IT started when she would be afraid of fluff blowing around on the floor a few months ago, and I showed her that it was just lint or a loose thread or whatever, then she learned about bugs, and doens't like them at all, but tollerates them somewhat. We've had a house fly now in the house about a week and I can't catch or kill the darned thing it's too fast and she FREAKS out everytime it comes close to her. She will screech a very high pitched screech, run away if she can and cry for about 10 minutes after. I have NO idea how to deal with this fear, since I can't catch it to show her and she refuses to take a closer look. I've had it land on me and walk on my leg, arm or whatever, i've named it, sung songs about the fly, but nothing is working. Is it time for one of those bugs catching jars and a fly net or something so we can catch them and look at them safely where they wont fly at her? She'll be 3 in a few months, and I thought it might be a little to advanced for her, but i'm really not sure. ANy ideas?

Ooh, good choice. I wouldn't trust my son with the flyswatter if his cousins were here. I already worry about the cat, who can get out of the way fine if she needs to. It's just too tempting for those little ones!

I had thought about the fly swatter idea, but with her 16 month old sister walking around and her tendency to turn everything into a weapon, I think it would be a bad idea. I'd rather teach her about them and to like them instead of killing them right now.

Have you offered the fly swatter to her? It might make it more of a game and less of a threat if she can run around the house trying to swat the fly with a "special swatter made just for killing flies". (I'd wash it before giving it to a swat-happy child, though... ew, fly guts)

My son is 20 months old, and loves to use our fly swatter. (We have way too many flies in the house because he insists on opening the doors and slowwwwly getting over the doorframe all by himself.) He's not scared of flies, but if he were I think the joy of smacking things with the swatter would cure him. He also thinks it's funny to watch me try to kill them, especially if I exaggerate my movements and make tennis-like grunting noises each time I swat.

Just as a practical suggestion, if you get the fly to follow you (with light or a sticky bib) into a small room with white walls (like the washroom) and then close the door, it's easier to find and kill it.

This is a great series for kids about bugs, it's fun and my kids love it!! It might help her to think of flies as cute rather than something to be afraid of.
Check it out, they have tons of episodes, all under 6 minutes long on youtube. All about different bugs. Try it and let me know what she thinks!
