Since we're always on about male circumcision......what about female?

Female genital cutting (FGC), also known as female genital mutilation (FGM), female circumcision, or female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), is any procedure involving the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs "whether for cultural, religious or other non-therapeutic reasons."[1] The term is almost exclusively used to describe traditional or religious procedures on a minor, which requires the parents' consent because of the age of the girl.

When the procedure is performed on and with the consent of an adult it is generally called clitoridectomy, or it may be part of labiaplasty or vaginoplasty.[2][3][4] It also generally does not refer to procedures used in sex reassignment surgery, and the genital modification of intersexuals.[5][6][7]

FGC is practiced predominantly in North Africa and parts of the Middle East and Southeast Asia,[8] although it has also been reported to occur in individual tribes in South America and Australia.[9] Opposition is motivated by concerns regarding the consent (or lack thereof, in most cases) of the patient, and subsequently the safety and long-term consequences of the procedures. In the past several decades, there have been many concerted efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO) to end the practice of FGC. The United Nations has also declared February 6 as "International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation".[10][11]

Sara B: MOST men are able to enjoy sex and still function after circumcision; but definitely not all men. Same with girls and FGM. Most are still able to function and enjoy sex (to a degree) after the "procedure" is done but not all.

I think that FGM is horrible. In my mind, where it differs from male circumcision is that it's an attempt to control a woman sexually, to make her stay "pure" for her husband and not want to sexually stray once she is married. That's just disgusting. The most extreme cases of FGM make it impossible for a woman to experience pleasure from any sex they may ever have and in some cases make it painful when intercourse does occur. I'm not sure in that respect it can be compared to male circumcision, as a man is still able to have sex and enjoy it after a circumcision.

Yeah, female, male, doesn't matter. Strapping someone down against their will and cutting off healthy functioning body parts is wrong.

To me it is equally as barbaric as Male Circ….unnecessary!

I disagree, Donatien. I do not think we should tolerate a practice that violates the rights of any human being.

These girls (and boys) have no say in what is happening to THEIR bodies. They will be forced to wear these scars for the rest of their lives--It is not something they can un-do when they are old enough to decide for themselves.
If a culture's beliefs are to clip a woman's clitorus so that sex is not enjoyable, that is fine, but they need to wait until the woman is old enough to decide for herself whether she shares those beliefs and wants to be clipped, otherwise the people forcing her to endure this surgery are infringing on her rights, and that is NOT okay.

Thanks, Katherine, for a neutral point of introducing us to FGModification.

I want to bring up one point that has not been addressed yet here: Tolerance. While we may not agree with the procedure we should tolerate that other people think different and that other cultures are different. Just because we don't understand we condemn.

FGModification should be performed my a medical doctor under appropriate conditions. Not in the jungle with a rusty knife.

I do not agree with male or female circ. Unless there is a genuine, medical reason for it, it shouldn't be done. Sick.

Always disgusted by this custom. And after reading and listening to women who had it done, the pain, the incontinence, the lack of pleasure during sex, the inability to menstruate properly or urinate properly etc. etc. etc.
Disgusting. I have issues with circ. on both sexes.

FGM was practiced in the US not too long ago. It became illegal in 1997. Both male and female circumcision were performed to cure all sorts of ill 'humors' and also in an attempt to curb masturbation.

something interesting that i recently read.... a woman in Guinea who was considered the "chief" cutter in the capital Conakry recently came clean saying that she after all the years that she "performed" the FGM she never actually cut! she would cinch thier clitorises to make the girl scream, bandage them up and send them on thier way in order to make the parents beleive the procedure had been done when in fact it hadn't...... just goes to show that there are a lot of individuals within those cultures who don't even agree with the practice.

I'm not pro-circ for women or men, but in my mind what I stated above in the difference, though I'm thinking in terms of the extreme cases of FGM that occurs in some cultures.

ITS MY RIGHT TO DECIDE WHAT BODY PARTS I WANT REMOVED FROM MY DAUGHTER. VAGINAS ARE UGLY AND GROSS AND IF SHE EVER WANTS A MAN TO SLEEP WITH HER SHE NEEDS PARTS REMOVED.

My Aunt had this done as an infant because they felt that her clitoris was too large and penis-like. :( I think they just trimmed things up a bit - but not removal of a full body part. Then again - her parents (my grandparents) are the same ones who tried to force my Mum to have an abortion when she got pregnant with my sister - then they made her give her up for adoption but they fought to get her back and did after 6 weeks. They also tried to tell me to make sure I cleaned under my son's foreskin - needless to say I never let them change his diaper! :S Anyway, I'm against circumcision or mutilation for both boys and girls.

I'm absolutely against any unconsenting minor having their body permanently altered if there is no medical need for it. Full stop.

Something like club feet or a cleft palate is different, because you are correcting a defect that can have a very negative effect on a child's health and functioning. But normal, healthy genitalia do not need to be "corrected" in any way shape or form, and I think that the child's right to bodily integrity far overrides anybody's culture or religion.

This procedure was developed centuries ago in order to keep women from having affairs. they basically take away all of the pleasure of intercourse and make it something for reproduction only. but in my opinion it is disgusting.

There are movements in place to stop this, but of course they can't stop it all.

This makes me want to cry, I saw a doco once where they performed FGC, it was so traumatising I couldn't watch it all. This poor girl, it was done without anaesthetic in filthy conditions. It makes me feel sick, for me I find it a million times worse than male circ, because it takes so much away from the woman, it denies them any pleasure from sex, not to mention putting their lives at risk. It's just awful.

I watched a movie once about FGM, I wish I could remember the name of it. It was horribly sad! It wasn't being done on newborns, it was done on girls who were 12-13 years old, and it was horribly painful. It was about a woman who tried to protect girls who refused to have it done. Anyway, there was just so much fear and pain involved! It was horrifying!

Last add: Female circumcision is currently practiced in at least 28 countries stretching across the center of Africa north of the equator; it is not found in southern Africa or in the Arabic-speaking nations of North Africa, with the exception of Egypt.6 Female circumcision occurs among Muslims, Christians, animists and one Jewish sect, although no religion requires it.*

Disgusting.

Its a cultural thing..

Why is FGC practiced?
There are many reasons FGC is practiced, including social, economic, and political reasons. Those who support FGC believe that it will empower their daughters, ensure the girls get married, and protect the family’s good name. In some groups, FGC is performed to show a girl’s growth into womanhood and, as in the Masai community, marks the start of a girl’s sexual debut. It also is performed to keep a woman’s virginity by limiting her sexual behavior. FGC is believed (by those who practice it) to stop a woman’s sexual desire. In some groups, women who are not cut are viewed as dirty and are treated badly. While FGC pre-dates both Christianity and Islam, religion is also used to promote the practice. Some communities believe that in order to be good Muslims, parents must have their daughters cut.

There are also many superstitions about FGC, such as:

•The clitoris will continue to grow as a girl gets older and so it must be removed.
•The external genitalia are unclean and can actually cause the death of an infant during delivery.
FGC is often part of a community’s tradition. Most parents who support FGC believe they are protecting their daughter’s future marriage prospects, and not hurting her. It is seen by parents as part of a girl’s upbringing.

It's supposed to be a rite of passage.

http://www.alanguttmacher.org/pubs/journ...

Female circumcision is an integral part of the societies that practice it, where patriarchal authority and control of female sexuality and fertility are givens. In communities where a person's place in society is determined by lineage traced through fathers, female circumcision reduces the uncertainty surrounding paternity by discouraging or preventing women's sexual activity outside of marriage. Although the societies that practice circumcision vary in many ways, most girls receive little education and are valued primarily for their future role as sources of labor and producers of children. In some communities, the prospective husband's family pays a brideprice to the family of the bride, giving his family the right to her labor and her children; she herself has no right to or control over either.

I am against female genital mutilation.

I am not against ritualized nicks.

The problem is - as I once read it - these "surgeries" were taking place in the filthiest places, with no anesthetic and isn't performed by a skilled surgeon or a medical practitioner. Not even someone trained to do it. These mutiliations leave the patients unable to have normal intercourse, unable to orgasm, some are in constant pain, many die from insane raging infection.

This isn't a simple circumcision, it is mutilation in every sense of the word.

[deleted account]

...So what is the point of female circumcision? If that were included in this I might have reason to give my opinion but as of right now, without all the facts, I can't...
