For the cat people

Don't forget to click the link to view the cat that has a wig on.

Cat people, beware. There's a new trend in the world of kitty grooming, and it's wacky to the max. Simply put: There are now wigs. For your cat. And it's totally for real.

Called Kitty Wigs®, the product is the wild dream of a woman named Julie Jackson (and her Siamese cat Boone). As the story on her website goes, she used to work for a newspaper, and then went freelance. Before you know it, she was making wigs for her cat, taking pics of other cats in wigs, and writing a book about it called Glamourpuss: The Enchanting World of Kitty Wigs. I kid you not.

Apparently, there are people out there who believe putting a wig on their favorite feline is indeed enchanting. Or fascinating. Or so crazy that they can't help themselves and must gawk at photos of cats doing their best impressions of Pippi Longstocking and Britney Spears in her club-hopping, umbrella-wielding days. I know this because the book, which was originally published in 2009, is now in its FOURTH printing.

I'll admit, I've never even understood putting little tiny clothes on your dog. I think it's pet torture. Do you think they really want to be wearing rain boots over their paws? Doubtful. But I can understand maybe if you've got a short-haired dog like a chihuahua in a really cold climate (like, say, Minnesota!) and you put a mini-puffer coat on it to keep it warm. That at least seems ... practical, in a way.

THIS? Kitty wigs?! No. No, no, no. There is no realistic objective here. It is nonsense. No cat wants to be put in a wig. You can tell just by flicking through the pics of Jackson's model kitties that they're thinking, "Humans are so freaking stupid!" They're totally rolling their eyes at the whole thing. And I don't blame them!

But who am I to judge? Jackson even has celeb fans. Well, at least one D-lister ... Bobcat Goldthwait. He's actually quoted on her site, singing Kitty Wigs' praises:

Why are kitty wigs so awesome? It's simple: cats play it straight. They don't lean on the joke. They get it. Cats are the Buster Keatons of the animal kingdom. Cats in wigs and the people who take their pictures bring me a lot of happiness and make me feel not so alone in the world.

Really? That's all it takes to make Bobcat Goldthwait deliriously happy? Uhm, okay. If cats in wigs are really that heartwarming to people, then I guess more power to people who dress up their kitties and get off on looking at pics of dressed-up kitties. But I still don't get it.

Do you understand the appeal of kitty wigs? Would you put one on your cat?

I have 6 cats I shudder to think what they would do to me if I turned my back for one second after having put wigs on them... They may actually decide they are going to take over the house...Oh wait thats already happened, but they may try to have me committed, And my husband will help them. Nope bad idea.

My cat would probably kill me in my sleep if I attempted to put one of these on her!

I put a Santa hat on my cat once. A cat-sized one. She just repeatedly shook her head trying to remove it until I took it off. I don't see her going for a wig, no matter how great I tell her that she'll look.

Hahahah Sharon and her melon helmet.

Zander would never dignify wearing a wig. :P

$60 for a cat wig?! How the hell do they keep them on the cat, anyway?
