Freedom of the internet

How do you feel about freedom and restrictions on the internet? Should government be able to shut down the internet in event of a cyber attack or any other reason?

Wikileaks has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Is a free internet and unbridled access to information the key to world peace?

I think the internet is our last hope of ever acheiving freedom. Look at places like Egypt where the state controls what the people here. They show video of small crowds on the streets and have reported the death toll at 11 when it is really in the hundreds. How scary to be totally under the thumb of the authorities like that.

I believe all information should be free even in governments. It gives accountabiltiy. Governments should not be doing anything that should be kept secret in the first place, including in the military. They are there to take care of their citizens first and foremost not run the world.

I just wish I could bypass corporations to get access to the information. The Zeitgeist Movement was talking one time of launching a public satelitte for unrestricted internet access. I think that's the only way, keep it out of the hands of governments and corporations to begin with.

I don't feel the government should be able to shut down the internet for any reason. I think the right people causing the attack would need to be caught and put a stop to it. Too many people use the internet for work purposes. It's not all just fun and games.

Saying that the government could shut down the internet if they suspect an ensuing "cyber attack" would give them the right to shut it down whenever they feel like for whatever reason they feel like.

It would be kinda like if they could suspend ALL of your human rights if they suspected you of being a "terrorist" without ever defining the word. Oh wait, they CAN do that. (Do you think that speaking out against the president will someday be considered reason to suspect somebody of being a terrorist? cause it sounds reasonable to me.)

My problem with governments being able to shut down or control the internet is that once they have the power it will be a very slippery slope to what is and isn't allowed. It may start off as only using the power for anti terrorist purposes but who knows what will end up being viewed as unsuitable and blocked.

I think some of the wikileaks have been life threatening and really unhelpful. Disclosing home addresses to the public of people who make and test drugs and of people who work for anit terrorisum is just irresponsible as they are putting both them and there children at risk. Do we really need to know these things. For the safety of our country we do not need to give away such information. Ok some of the stuff they have released is just embarrasing stuff to the government and quite amusing but I think it should stop there. I think the general public is best shielded from the work our anti terrorist people do or you would never go out the house again!

Julian Assange is going to get people killed. He has no morals, no sense for anyone but himself and I don't feel badly for all the crap he's reaped upon himself.

Some secrets, the govt shouldn't be keeping. But you shouldn't be spilling secrets that will get people killed.

No the government shouldn't be able to shut down the internet in the case of a cyber attack. I think thats weak and a bogus argument.

They shouldn't be allowed to shut down the internet. But certain people should be banned from it. NOT Julian Assange though. Wikileaks LOL the government gets what they deserve.
