Funny or offensive?

A Melbourne woman is outraged after discovering a Borders book store was selling a 'control a woman' remote.

The toy product, similar to a TV remote control, is being sold as a novelty gift for $14.99.

Katie Robertson saw the remote in a Borders book store last week, after attending a lunch celebrating International Women's Day.

"There are certain buttons on there. For example, the male may decide that he wants beer, sex or food. He may press a button in which he requires the woman to remove her clothes, cook, clean, leave, [or] say yes," she told ABC Radio's Jon Faine.

"There's also a button in which you can increase her breast size."

Ms Robertson says she has no doubt it was intended to be a joke, but that argument does not wash with her.

"I think it's actually about respect and what's appropriate to sell," she said.

"I'm troubled by this item, mainly because it encourages a stereotype of women as submissive, who are to be controlled."

Lauren Thompson of Borders says the product is intended as a joke and says they are also selling a 'control a man' remote, which has sold out.

"All I can say in its defence is that it is base level humour," she said.

"But it's meant to be a bit funny, a bit of a gimmick, something you might buy for your best mate before a stag night or a hens night."

Ms Robertson has complained in writing to the store, but Ms Thompson says they will not take it off the shelves on the basis of one complaint.

"We've probably got a number of products, books and literature which could fall into that category... so we need to be quite careful," Ms Thompson said.

What do you think? Funny or offensive?

I think it's frickin' hilarious that the control a man remote is sold out!!!! Of COURSE we want to control our is called "training" and I have finally gotten mine trained!!! LMAO! He would need a remote (that actually worked btw) to control this independent, confident, out of control, woman! lol!!!

I often wonder how people get through life with absolutely no sense of humor. They must be incredibly uptight and dull. If anyone looks hard enough anywhere to find something that offends them, they will. They even said they had a man controller, that was sold out! Someone's has been buying that, and my guess is it was women. If I saw this, I would laugh because it's obviously a gag gift. But maybe I'm just too laid back to get bent out of shape over something that doesn't deserve that much credit...=)

Personally, I think it's funny. Kind of lame, but not offensive at all. It's a freaking toy!

A few months ago there was a huge issue over a urinal in a bar where I live. In the men's washroom, there was a urinal shaped like a mouth... it almost looked like the Rolling Stones logo, the big red lips and a tongue.. HUGE scandal over it, and eventually the bar had to remove it. I really think that people need to lighten up. This is not earth-shattering stuff.

Katie needs to get laid...has she seen the man remote control? ohh she probably wouldn't find that funny..and how about that book with topless men cleaning called porn for women?...yeah I can see where she's coming from but ffs! lighten up!

They do have a man. I think it's called the 'perfect' man or something. So that's funny. The woman is kind of funny. The man is MORE funny. Make sense? I guess that's hypocritical....

Funny along the lines of a "Spencer's" but not a book store. I alway thought "Borders" had a classier image than that. It was a poor stocking choice, IMO.

Of course, if the "man remote" were available right next to it, at least it would be equal!

Spencer's is a shop around me that sells humor items, gag gifts and adult novelty stuff. Heck, they probably already have that remote!

Very funny and the woman who complained has her panties all in a twitch for nothing!

It's no different than all the things for sale that slam men in general. Sexist humour has been around forever. Comedians make oodles of money all the time with comedy bits completely composed of sexist humour, directed both at men and women.

I bought a fridge magnet that says

"If a man is alone in the woods and speaks but there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong?"

lol. I can't see any man getting his boxers in a knot about that one!

That lady needs a hobby. :)

Lol its funny..if it actually worked then maybe now it wouldnt be as funny or wait increase my breast size I'm liking just a joke harm.:-)i thought of stag&hen parties as soon as i read what it was..come on for heaven sake women drink from penis straws at hen

Elisabeth - posted on 08/26/2010

Funny, I wonder if she's ever heard of a penis enlarger, thats not even a joke it's serious. I don't think most men would be offended that there would be a product that is actually meant to be used and apparently works (I wouldn't know myself...8-?) in order to enlarge a mans penis. Nevermind a pretend remote, personally I wouldn't buy one...unless the 'bigger breasts' button worked. But by the sounds of it she is so high up on herself she would never go into an adult store, who knows she probably thinks it's degrading. She must have such an easy/boring life the only thing she has to worry about is a joke toy.

I think it's funny. I'm sure some women would want a man remote that says "do dishes", "bigger penis" etc.

[deleted account]

Bah not funny, not offensive... It is obviously using an archaic stereotype to make people smile and it has nothing to do with degrading women or whatever she freaked out about... jeez, she needs to get laid...

[deleted account]

Funny that woman needs to untwist her panties and realise that a gag toy is not going to affect anything in the grand scheme of things.

I would buy one for my hubby for xmas and allow him to use every now and then - he would LOVE it - it's only a little role play ;-)

Brittney - posted on 08/26/2010

Oh my God, it's funny! She's acting like it fucking works! lol I would buy that as a gag gift for my boyfriend any day.

Tah - posted on 08/26/2010

ironic that she is fighting si hard for women who are buying the control a man remote so fast they were sold

Brooke - posted on 05/13/2010

It's funny. They should make one for men too! Sometimes I would like a remote! Haha! I mean it's not split your sides funny and I don't know that I would even pay a quarter for it but I'm secure and confident as a woman and nothing poking fun at that could ever make me think or feel differently about myself and being a woman. =)

Terri - posted on 04/28/2010

I think that is so funny!! Only idiots with no sense of humour would find that offensive.

Celia - posted on 04/27/2010

Why is it in a Bookstore? I have no issue with it being sold at a sex shop with all the other gag gifts but a book store? I have never heard of this book store but would I bring my kid in there to get some books? If its like every other book store I've been to I'd say not the place to be selling it. It's not funny to plant ideas of how to treat women where kids can see them. Would you want a little boy to see anything saying "small dicks suck", or a girl to see "bend your mans cock to hit the spot!" Why would I want my son to see a boob increase button? Its the same thing and its a body issue problem thats affecting our kids enough already, you'd think they'd be insulated a bit in a book store!

Adult shops is fine... I want the bend your mans cock version, it'd be fun if it worked!

C. - posted on 04/26/2010

I didn't really find that funny OR offensive.. To me it's just not an important issue b/c I don't think that has anything to do with how men really treat women. The men that have been rude to women like that, have been doing it for years and years.. I hardly think a toy remote is going to make it any worse.

Amy - posted on 04/26/2010

Just another fun NOVELTY item...chick def has her panties in a bunch...and OMG Sharon and Kate, Ya'll have me in stitches...sometimes I think i just automatically look for your comments! Luv your sense of humor :D

Emma - posted on 04/26/2010

LOL Really its a bit of fun, nothing else,
She dose know they are just pretend and don't actually do anything......
It would be cool if they made a remote for kids, it should have a mute button, a sleep button, a tidy up your toys button ect......
But i would want it to really work lol

This is hilarious! Pretty sick, but funny.I feel very sad for people who have no sense of humour!

Kayle - posted on 04/06/2010

I think thats hilarious and would even consider buying one for the hubby. Now where do I get the remote to control him. I would like a change the baby button, along with a do the dishes, take out the trash, walk the dog, give me a back rub, and a tell me I'm pretty button. LOL

[deleted account]

i think its fine, they have men ones. i find them funny. we dont have any but i mean since theres one for both sexes they arent offensive. but then again today everyone gets offended over every little thing. no one has a sense of humor anymore.

Patricia - posted on 04/02/2010

FUNNY....Some people just don't have a sense of's obvious that it's these same people, that will some how ruin it for others..what a shame.

Charlie - posted on 03/27/2010

funny , he has the control's to the woman remote , she can has the on / off switch to a vibrator same / same right ? LOL

Caitlin - posted on 03/27/2010

I think it's cute.. I could see it as a funny gag gift - i'd never buy it, but i'm sure I know a bunch who would. Even if there wasn't a man and woman version it wouldn't matter to me, I've seen a ton of books and joke items about men being brainless/single-minded so I think it's fair both ways. Heck we even get our own gyms, but when a gay bar in Montreal tried to ban women, there was a huge uproar.. I think she needs to go get something extracted from her behind, maybe loosen her up a bit.

Lisamarie - posted on 03/27/2010

What a ridiculous thing to be offended by! LOL. You can get guy one's too, sure, it's kinda sad if you buy one but where I live they sell them in joke stores or "mens gadget" stores. I personally think you must have a very boring life to actually make a complaint about something like this.

LaCi - posted on 03/27/2010

Its really not funny OR offensive. Unless maybe it shouts commands. In which case if I had a girlfriend I would buy one. "clothes OFF! make me a sammich!" could be fun. Yay naked lunch.

[deleted account]

I'm not offended as long as one for man and woman is offered. But it's stupid. If I saw it in the store, I'd probably look at it, laugh a little and put it back on the shelf. I'll keep my $14.95 in my pocket, thank you!

Dana - posted on 03/16/2010

Oh, yeah...I should add that I'd never *buy* one. lol The idea is funny, thinking about what's on the "man" control is funny but to own one, not so funny.

Cassie - posted on 03/16/2010

I think the idea of both the male and female remote is a ridiculously stupid waste of money but I think it's even sillier to be offended by them. How insecure must you be to be that offended by a fake remote?

Dana - posted on 03/16/2010

Funny and it's even funnier that the man one has sold out! I have a sense of humor that's all over the place, from childish to intellectual wit. I couldn't live without any of it.

Kate CP - posted on 03/16/2010

I think she need a hot pink vibrator with it's own kick stand and pull start. That puppy should rumble like a Harley.

In short: she needs to lighten up. :P

Sharon - posted on 03/16/2010

oh puhlease. I once proposed a shock collar for men complete w/gps tracking and nuclear detonation for when they really piss us off.

My co-workers were in stitches. I would probably buy that remote for my husband myself and tell him "here hunny, for your dreams!" hahahahaha that woman from australia probably starches her bras and "blow job" is a dirty phrase.

Sunny - posted on 03/16/2010

Funny, funny, funny..... I bet her partner wishes he had one lol! (olny jokes) :)

Jess - posted on 03/16/2010

I think its hillarious.... and the fact that the man remote has sold out is just the icing on the cake ! It reminds me of the stepford wifes. The husbands had remotes just like that. I would love to know if this goodie two shoes has a copy of that movie !

If women jump up and down at everything that appears "Repressive" than we are going to look like such babies !! If we can do anything a man can, than its time to learn how to take a joke like a man !

Now I'm off to buy a remote to control my man !!!

Ez - posted on 03/16/2010

I don't see what's offensive about it, when they have both a male and female version. Is it lame? Pretty much. But I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it. People need to learn to pick their battles.

Amie - posted on 03/16/2010

LOL! I'm with Lindsay on this one. It's nothing to get bent out of shape about. Laugh and move on if you don't want to buy it.

Jocelyn - posted on 03/16/2010

I agree with Krista, it's not funny, but it's not offensive either. A little stupid imo. I think the woman is overreacting, it's just a fake/gag remote.

Carolee - posted on 03/16/2010

I think it's funny that the "control a man" remote toy was sold out!!! I think that goes to prove that, while some women are still submissive, there are definately those of us who have the "upper hand".

It was a joke toy! Not everybody has the same sense of humor. They actually had one of those remotes in "The Stepford Wives"... the version with Nicole Kidman (I haven't seen the original yet). That was entertainment with the base line that a woman made up a town of Barbie Doll housewives that the men controlled. People didn't boycot or make a big fuss about that movie that I remember. It's the same controller from the movie!

Krista - posted on 03/16/2010

Not funny, but I'm not all twisted in knots about it either. I've seen similar-type gag gifts poking fun at men.

Things like this are immature, yes. But I don't think they're a major contributor towards the attitudes of those men who DO oppress women. They've been managing that quite nicely well before gifts like this came along.
