This stems from the Lil Wayne Thread. I am trying to work out why is it ok for some group the degrad themselves and call themselves certain names and yet when another group uses the same words in similar formats it becomes a problem and becomes racist or anti-semitic. I find this to be so everywhere in the World, Here in South Africa its ok for a black man to call his girlfriend or friends any number of thing and yet when a whiteman uses the same words. I is all over the newpapers and a huge uproar that involves lawyers. A negative term is still a negative term no matter who uses it. Whether in music or in any other format.

Has this become some kind of cultural thing or is it a way of saying... Well I am not sure what they are trying to say. Whatever happen to whats good for the goose is good for the gander?

I think it's one of those things that depends heavily on context. For example, if my best friend mentioned that the pizza delivery guy was flirting with her, I can teasingly say, "Well, that's 'cause he knows you're a great big slut!" And she'll just laugh and go, "Well yes, of course!"

Now, if some stranger came up to her and called her a great big slut, obviously the INTENT behind the words would be very, very different, wouldn't it? And she'd be hurt and offended, and rightly so.

I think this is similar in scope. And when someone gets in shit for calling someone an offensive name, and then says, "But they call themselves that!", question to them is "And did you know that person well enough to KNOW that you could call them that without offense being taken? No? Then just don't frigging say it."

I don't think it's cultural. It's just a matter of WHO you're saying it too. Like Krista said, if you don't know the person, don't use derogatory words.

Krista is right it is the relationship you have with people that allows certain phrases to be used without causing offence. Some of these negative phrases are terms of endearment between two people that know each other well.
