google maps and street view

Has anyone else ever gone onto google maps and used the "street view" option for looking at your neighbourhood?
Not everyone can do it, sometimes you need to pick the name of a business close by and go from there.
I can actually "walk" around my whole village, save for going onto private property. But I can see my house, my vehicles, can zoom into my windows, and look over the fence into my backyard. I can also "walk" to the bar, the store, the LCBO, the docks and the post office. I was even able to find my son riding his bike down the road at the time the pics were taken by the "google" van with the camera mounted to a pole on top.
And our dogs are also on the "walk". One is taking a pee on a pole!
I haven't looked this season yet, but all the pics from the last time I checked were from the summer of 09'. I can tell by the flowers in my window boxes!
It's kind of neat but at the same time I'm not sure I like it, not sure if I feel my privacy has been invaded.
Anyone who knows my mailing address can "see" my house, yard, pool etc.
How do you feel about this option?
And anyone who wants to take a "walk" around my village just msg me and I'll send you a link. lol

I think it's pretty cool and have done it in my neighborhood too.
I know there has been controversy about it because police have been using it to look at people's property and see if they are doing anything illegal. That isn't okay with me; if they need a search warrant to be on the property, they shouldn't be able to do it virtually.

I do think people should be able to opt out if they don't want their homes on it though. I'm sure that they can blur a house out.

If it was a live-view, I'd be creeped out by it. But since the pictures are at least 2 years old, I think it's cool. The picture of our current house was before we moved into it, so I googled our old house, and sure enough, there was my truck in the driveway! They blur out the license plate numbers though, so that's good. I couldn't see into any windows - don't know whether they blur those out too or it was just the sun - or into our backyard.

way back when google earth/maps came out you couldn't find mine that way either. I had to google a house on the main road then drag the map around until I found my property. It kind of sucks that its on there now.

Like a lot of other posts...

It's cool & creepy.

I'm thankful though, that we're to remote to get the "street view" my yard is a wreck. I did see the google car in town recently so that may change.

I have used it when I was house shopping though. I used it when I needed to track down a person who was MIA. using their address I google mapped them, then went to street view to find businesses nearby that I could call and see if the whole area was affected by a hurricane or if it was just their phone. The business answered, so I called the police to do a wellness check. They were fine, btw.

It doesn't bother me. There are plenty of weirdos walking around outside anyways. I think it's kind of fun to look at the places I used to live and see how they've changed. My old house in Qualicum is so pretty. I'll try and find it.

You can't actually "walk" around in my neighborhood, but you can zoom pretty close from the over head view. I live in an old neighborhood around a lake--no businesses, so I think that's why. You can "walk" around the main roads though and see those houses, and the school, and such. I think it's kind of cool.

I don't know how I'd feel if you could "walk" up to my house, but I don't think I'd be too concerned. Names are not attached to the addresses on Google so people would have to know the person in the residence to know who lives where, and if they know my address anyway, they can just drive by and see everything Google shows. The pics are only taken like once every year (give or take depending on the area), so it's not like they are monitoring activity--just cataloging the area. Overall, I think it's fine.

Yep, I did it with my house. You can tell it's my house from the stained glass in the front and the basketball-sized (and shaped) ceramic pig on the front stoop. ;)

I'm gonna echo Jennifer, here. It's cool, but kinda creepy.

Yeah, it is neato.... but it does feel a little Big Brotherish to me. I guess it's cool that it's not a live feed and they only update the pics (I think annually or bi-annually). I guess I'm not too worried about it as long as it stays that way. ;)

I too, am curious about what others think about it.

Actually, come to think of it there really is no such thing as privacy in our society anymore... personal imformation is obtained from us through credit cards and using the internet, for example. There was a time when our homes were our sanctuary. Now I can't even hide from people trying to sell me crap and get me to fall for scams in my own home. We actually had some Triton Global scam long distance company charge us $50 for a 6 min collect call at 3am that no one in my house answered.

There is no sanctuary or privacy in our own homes anymore.
