Gothic kittens' with piercings deemed animal cruelty

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A U.S. woman who marketed “gothic kittens“ with ear and neck piercings over the Internet has been convicted of animal cruelty.

A Pennsylvania jury on Wednesday convicted 35-year-old dog groomer Holly Crawford of one misdemeanor count and one summary count of animal cruelty, but acquitted her on two separate counts. She will be sentenced March 31.

Crawford was charged in December 2008 after animal welfare officers took several kittens and a cat from her home. Deputy District Attorney David Pedri told jurors that Crawford inflicted pain on three black kittens to make money by selling “gothic kittens” on the Internet.

Defence attorneys argued that parents allow children to get pierced ears at young ages, and it would be wrong to hold cat owners to a higher standard.

Um weird yes. Animal cruelty? I don't know.

Refering to castrating piglets It's done here in Canada too, I'm a farm girl and I'm sure I'll catch it for saying so but we used to do it to our piglets and we docked the lamb's tails too. I guess its all in how you look at things, I understand where people are comming from but it is done for a reason. The testosterone hormone actually does make meat taste and smell strong and the sheep actually get dung stuck to thier tails and matted wool if they keep thier long tails. That having been said, we didn't use any cattle prods or tatooing or anything else that would hurt our animals. And when it came to slaughter it was done as humanely as possible.

Jo, I absolutely think that it's still cruelty. And I hate that the business runs that way. However, I know that my eating meat is not going to stop those practices. The industry simply doesn't care if a few hundred, or even a few thousand, people stop eating meat. So I just try and buy as much free-range product as possible and support any efforts to help regulate the meat industries and make them more humane.

Mary I completely agree; I'm a fellow veggie (7 years and going strong) and also have many piercings and tattoos, and yes they hurt, so why would anyone force that on an animal?! There's a slaughter house in between Okotoks and our neighboring town; so I'm constantly seeing trucks of animals go by... if I was brave enough I might hijack one and set all the animals free!!! Lmao :)

I was a vegan for about 11 years, and have been a vegetarian for 16 years...cruelty to animals makes me pretty angry!!! I have two cats who are like smaller furrier children in my family, and slaughter houses and mass produced meats are horrifying, imo! I can't imagine treating my pets this way...I wouldn't make piercing or tattoo decisions for my children, why would I make them for any sentient creature!?!? I have a tattoo and piercings myself, but they were painful and a personal choice...If Miles wants them, he will make that choice after he is old enough to do so!

that's true and i think it is the same level Jo ...i saw a baby pig have his testes removed with no anesthetic on a jamie oliver special..it is common practice in Europe because apparently because it makes the meat taste better?! Guess its one of those things tho..out of sight out of mind. I still had pork and the crackling at christmas:(
I don't think farm animals deserve to be treated with less respect or dignity than pet animals. Humans are donkey'd

I just wanna throw this out there... if ear piercings, docking tails and cropping ears are painful, unneccessary and cruel... what are your (in general) thoughts on slaughter houses? Farms that brand/tattoo their animals/livestock? Chicken houses? Other mass meat productions where animals are literally caged, fed, branded, pierced, tattoo'd, poked, prodded and then slaughtered?

All of those cruel, painful, unnecessary things are done to those animals before it is murdered to be put on our plates :P lol I'm genuinely curious if you (in general) think these are the same levels of 'cruelty' or if it's different cause cats & dogs vs cows & chickens...?

Yeah, I have to say that it's the neck piercings that irked me. I mean, ear piercings are weird, and I think they're borderline cruelty to inflict on an animal, but a neck piercing is awful. But, personally, I think that docking tails and cropping ears are cruel practices because they're unneccessary and painful, so maybe it's just me...

Krista, my aunt has pugs - she makes costumes for them... she sent me a picture of "Emo Boop" she had sewn this black 'dress' and had made fake 'running eyeliner' and black 'lipstick' things that she just kinda sticky taped onto Boops face... I pee'd a lil bit laughing at that picture, I'm gonna have to see if I still have it or ask her to send it again lmao

I cropped my dog's ears, I don't see the big deal from the ethical standpoint. I do think it's weird though.

I'm going to make money selling emo kittens -- it'll be cruelty-free, because they'll just be wearing lots of eyeliner.

I don't think it's any worse then docking a tail or cropping the ears. I think that's bogus too though.

On a side note, I just heard on the local news about a guy tattooing a toddler

I don't see how piercing an animal is cruelty but piercing your baby is just fine...personally

Hmmm... While it's not cruelty per say, I do think that it is incredibly stupid and unnecessarily (just like ear piercings on babies are incredibly stupid and unnecessary). There's just so many way's a piercing on a cat could go wrong. Now that woman who covered her cat's chest in a big sphinx tattoo, that would be cruelty.

I think she's a dumbass, and I think whoever bought them, is an even bigger dumbass.

So that's what the docking tails thing was about. There was another article that claimed she had docked their tails but I didn't see one without a tail so I went looking and found this one instead.

The neck piercing didn't really bother me after looking at it. It's on the back with no bigger a hole than the ears that are done. Think belly button piercing on a human.

Though if she was abusing them too it makes sense on why she was convicted.

Neck piercings...yea, that's cruelty. But ear piercing is something that isn't really all that cruel, to me. I mean the Egyptians did it thousands of years ago before veterinary technology was even invented. But doing this to make a buck is what pisses me off. :/
