Have you ever found some great sidewalk finds?

We were walking home from the ice-cream place -- my younger daughter in the double stroller, my stepsons walking along beside her, and my older daughter in my husband’s arms, about half a block back because she wanted to WALK! And then have UPPIES! And then WALK! And then have UPPIES!

We passed an interesting-looking end-table. “Free!” said a neatly-markered sign placed on top. My stepkids didn’t skip a beat. “Do you want to try to put that in the stroller?” Max asked, as my husband slowly shook his head, knowing exactly what was happening.

The sidewalk bandit was striking again.

Before you ask, the answer is yes: I am paranoid about bedbugs. And I am probably kidding myself that a careful inspection, and a refusal to take home anything upholstered, will keep me safe. But I can’t resist sidewalk finds!

The side table was definitely my best find. And I am still haunted by a set of brightly-colored plastic shelves that I missed because I was late picking Penny up from nursery school. But the amazing bouquet of peacock feathers sure came in handy for our last rainy-day craft project!

Of course, back in Brooklyn, it wasn’t so catch-as-catch-can. We had regular “big garbage” pickup days and knew that if you drove around early on the right morning, you’d find all sorts of treasures ripe for the picking. (This was in the days before the Craigslist Free section and Freecycle, of course.) That’s how I scored my vintage kitchen cabinet, an amazing dining-room table, and a stunning chest of drawers.

But I’ve done all right here, without even trying. Of course I still wish I had been just a touch later and picked up those colorful shelves. But there’s always next time ...

Have you made some great sidewalk finds? Is this strictly an urban phenomenon? Does the word “free” fill you with joy?

Admittedly, yes. Quite a few.

Around here you get fined for putting large items like that out unless it's a scheduled cleanup, which they only have every other year. So no sidewalk finds for me LOL!

A family friend of ours once drove home from work at 1am and found a 35 inch tv with its own stand with a free sign. He knew it wouldn't be there in the morning. So he hawled it into his van at 1am used it for Wii for a year or so. Then when they moved they were downsizing and wanted to get rid of it and they gave it to us!

Oh i found a laser jet printer on the roadside about 7 years ago and seriously, i have not replaced the ink cartridge and still works perfectly. I use it every day for uni and for the kids crafts. We even used it to print all our wedding invites and thank yous. It's like a magical printer with a never ending ink cartridge :)*touch wood*

The week we had our garage sale, our neighbor put a recliner by the road to get rid of. We took it and put $25 on it for the sale. Easiest $25 we've ever made!

My front loader and dryer are off the roadside and have been working perfectly for 4 years. I went and knocked on the persons front door to ask if the washer was working she said yes it works, it's just noisy and she prefered her old top loader (The noise was just bunch of hair pins in the filter that were rattling around). In fact, half the furniture in my house is a free roadside find. I found an old commercial style mix master with the bowl and attachments on the roadside that worked perfectly so i cleaned it up and sold it for 180 bucks just yesterday. My hubby found a kids swing set in great condition but it didn't have the bolts, he was driving past the house the next day there was a big sign on the tree saying bolts for child's play set and a bag with all the bits.
I put stuff out on the roadside even when it's not verge pickup and it always gets taken. Love it.

When I moved to Sydney when I was 19 my entire apartment was furnished off the street , I lived an a very affluent suburb and people would throw out perfectly good TV's , Computers , fridges I had two almost new sofas and a large glass coffee table , My friends got telescopes newly boxed gaming tables .

It was every couple of months the would have roadside pick up and people would put out the most awesome stuff !

we found a perfect condition (slightly dusty which wiped off with a paper towek and water) changemat/baby bath, it has everything you need all the trays for stuff to be put in, it sits in my lounge room and Ive been using it since we got it 10 months ago. Everyone said it was a great find as they are worth $350.

Also a few baby toys, an 8-ball the ones you shake and they give you an answer to a question, story telling bear where you press each one of its toes, kids chain saw, tones of story books, a massive stuffed bear, connecting blocks which the kids both still play with, ste of expensive golf clubs, a scooter with lights, hannah montana microphone, kids carmadagascar bag (we use this for my daughters overnight bag) a pencil case with my aughters name written on it , they obviously had a kid with the same name and a whole bunch of other great stuff (came from the same house). We came home with so much and the kids still love all of it. I nevr used to check road side collections before then lol

In my mums area we saw a slide and chair, great condition my mum still uses them we set the slide up so my 3 yr old slides straight into the pool she loves it

I can't say that I found anything like that but I have found a hundred dollar bill when I was cleaning the parking lot at the gas station I was working at. Nobody was around, it was the middle of the night, so yeah, I kept it.
