I'll have a Heineken with my fish & chips...

I was bored, and perusing the headlines on MSN when I came across this little tidbit about the upcoming Summer Olympics in London. Apparently, they have chosen the Dutch beer Heineken a the "official" summer beer of the games. What? If I were British, I think I'd be offended, and as an American, if I had traveled to London for the games, I'd be after a traditional English ale - not some (imo) sub-par beer from another county.

What's even more outrageous to me is this: McDonald's, a huge sponsor of the games, has forced the Olympic official to ban the sale of fries at all food vendors unless they are part of the traditional British fish and chips. So unless you are eating at a McD's, or have a hankering for fish, fries are a no-go.

Read the memo that is reportedly going to be posted for customers about this:

Is it just me, or is this seriously out of hand? Growing up, I used to really love the Olympics, and waited anxiously for them to come around. My whole family would sit and watch it for days. However, this over-commercialism leaves a rather bitter taste in my mouth, and makes me less than enthusiastic about watching.

I would love to participate in the discussion, but the wankers that run COM have yet to fix yet another glitch in it's operations.

I have notifications that tell me other have posted, but I can't see anything after Jaime's post. :[

I wouldn't be going over there and eating McDonalds anyway but its poor form on their part.

As for the beer, I wouldn't be drinking that any way.

I'd be in the pub, drinking a pint of English beer in the beer garden and then a kebab on the way home, true British style.

We have HDD recorders on our tvs now so we don't need to watch it in the middle of the night to see the diving... the only thing worth watching out of anything in the olympics.

But who is going to drink a British beer......?

But seriously, with regard to the over-commercialisation, it left a bitter taste in my mouth years ago with the Sydney Olympics when many US/American TV stations, in bidding for rights for televising the Olympics, were forcing the Aussies to change the timing of certain events so that all the best TV would be available *LIVE* in the US, because they were concerned they would lose advertising revenue. You know what? We watch the fucking live Olympics in the middle of the night MOST of the time, so suck it up princess.

Apparently they did the same in Beijing.

I think this is crap too. Seriously McDonalds... aren't you already the international monopoly on fast food?

Yeah, they're really out of control with the copyright stuff.

And I agree with you about the beer -- I don't doubt that it's simply because Heineken ponied up the most sponsorship cash, but still. When we had the Winter Olympics here in Canada, if the "official" beer had been Coors or Budweiser, people would have been PISSED.
