Is re-gifting tacky or acceptable?

I have done it :/ I think there is nothing wrong with it if you've never used it and it still has tags.
Besides, how are they going to know? Why waste?

It is Tacky if you just want to re-gift junk you don't want. If its something you know a friend might actually like its not as tacky. If you know its not something anyone would want don't re-gift it, maybe give it to charity.

People have way too much when they become soooo picky and choosy. Back in the day people were just grateful for a gift and recieved them graciously, people shared their gifts with people who had a need for them; the poor and underprivileged. They did this by visitation and learning about their family members and their needs. We tend to only circulate among people who party and move as we do, thereby ignoring the less fortunate, which is what the spirit of Christmas and giving is truly about... not ourselves and superficial or extravagant desires.

As long as it's un-opened etc, I've no problem with it. I have had some awful gifts off-of my Dad and his wife when they first got together, like opened foam bath and make up, oh and underwear! (hopefully new, had no tags though - eek!)

I've done it, and I wouldn't mind if someone gave me a gift knowing it was re-gifted. I am all about being fiscally conscious. If it's a good gift the person will enjoy, then I say go for it. Oh, and I agree with everyone else, needs to be new and in the box, never used.

It's becoming more acceptable. It depends if it's a good gift. If it's something shit that you didn't like yourself/no one would ever like why would you give it to someone else. Why bother giving someone a gift if it isn't something they need or would like.

A little bit of both. I think regifting for something like the white elephant (Is that right?) it is fine. But if there is a chance you forgot who gave you the gift, and you give it to someone that knows the person who gave you the original gift, yeah that is tacky.

I've regifted items that were never opened or used. Sometimes people just guess wrong and if I know someone who will appreciate it or use it, then they should have it. Also, it is less waste. Reduce, recycle, reuse! Now, if any of you gets a pasta maker for Christmas, and it's just not you, I would LOVE the regift! ;)

I've regifted, but only if it's in perfect condition and in its original packaging, and it's something that I would have been very likely to buy for that person ANYWAY. So if, for example, someone buys me a lovely scarf, in a colour that makes me look bilious, but that would make my mother look radiant, and the tags are still on the scarf, then I would have no issue with either popping the scarf in WITH my mom's birthday or Christmas gift, or even just giving it to her for a non-occasion, saying, "Someone gave this to me, and it's lovely, but the colour just doesn't work on me. It's absolutely your colour though, so if you want it, I'd love for you to have it."

Re-gifting is awesome! If you're doing it to get rid of crap that no one would want... not good, but if you have something in perfectly good condition that you don't want/need... why not give it to someone you love that WOULD want/need it? ;)

Of course, I'm also the 'queen' of accepting second hand stuff.

LOL i have done it as well. I end up with stuff that is not my taste or style or dont ever use so I just regift. I feel its okay as long as the person understands why you did and make some ground rules when buying gifts- you know like - please get me something that I will actually use or is my taste.

I've done it, possibly a couple of times. It's not just about waste, it's about money at the end of the time. If times are hard and you have something that you know someone would like then why not!

As long as it is just like new, and you don't accidentally give it back to the person who gave it to you, why not? It beats selling it in a garage sale.

If it's never been opened or used, I don't see a problem with it! Why keep something that's a duplicate or that you know you are never going to use? You just have to make sure you don't give it back to the person who gave it to you! :)

Editted to add, we've done it with wedding gifts and kid's presents that were duplicates and we didn't have a gift enclosure for so we couldn't return them.
