Then what is a nymphomaniac ?
# a woman with abnormal sexual desires
# nymphomaniacal: (used of women) affected with excessive sexual desire
#Hypersexuality is the desire to engage in human sexual behavior at a level high enough to be considered clinically significant.
#a disorder in woman characterized by an overactive libido, extreme or obsessive uncontrollable desire for sexual stimulation. It is generally associated with hormonal imbalance or neurological disorders.

Its diagnosable , so if a woman can be addicted surely a man can , i think they cop more flak over it simply because people assume men are sex "addicts" anyway , which is unfair to those who truly have it .

Nothing funny - I was organising breakfast for kids.

I agree Loureen, they are very real disorders, but I think the term is abused. It has become a great excuse for people too. It absolutely IS unfair to those who truly have it, but it is like ADD and ADHD. Very real disorder, but overdiagnosed, and therefore making it difficult for those who really have it.

So was I. I've been thinking about it, but can't really come up with anything. I did find a Wikipedia listing for vibrator addiction which left me with this image of a woman walking around permanently trembling, but that's about it.

LOL, Carol, their dick gets the shakes and explodes.......

In all honesty, however, I do think it seems to be the "in" excuse these days. While I do believe that it is a very real addiction for SOME, I don't think it is nearly as prevalent as all these men in therapy seem to think. I nearly fell over laughing when I heard the latest, with Jesse James heading into rehab for help. "Look Sandra, I'm gonna fix it". I had been putting bets on it with my hubby only a day before - you could see it coming. Some of these men are just sorry they got caught.

I know that when I stop drinking coffee (my addiction) I get terrible headaches. I hear that alcoholics get the shakes and the DT's. I wonder what happens to sex addicts when they stop having sex?

Sex addiction is very real... it's the needing of a certain feeling to keep you happy (what's the name of the feel-good-hormones? are they endorphins? the word escaped me). Just like drug/alcohol addiction, even shopping addiction.

It's just sad that everyone who gets caught with their pants around their ankles uses it as an excuse to get out of trouble.

Impulse control problems.. I think it's a convenient excuse for most, there may be cases where this is a real issue, but I highly doubt it's as common as we are led to believe.

Exactly, it's like any other addiction.....drug or otherwise! There's always a deeper issue! Drugs, sex, food......they're all just SYMPTOMS!

I think sex addiction is just indicative of a deeper emotional problem. I do believe that people can think they are addicted to sex and use it as a coping mechanism for their deeper-seeded issues.

I think anything can become "addictive" if the person is abusing it to the point that it controls and destroys their lives (drugs, alcohol, gambling, eating, shopping, sex, exercising, etc). However, I feel that a lot of people CLAIM to be sex addicts when really they are just people who have no desire to be faithful to their partners in the first place and get caught cheating.

I dunno, I think it can be real but I think most men use it as an excuse. "Honey, I cheated on! But it's OK, I'm a sex addict, I'll go to councelling and it'll make me all better!"
I thought it was normal for men to think about sex every 3 seconds, that's pretty time consuming. I think most men have lied to get into some girls knickers and my hubby loves porn, I don't mind a bit myself but I think this is a bit over the top. A celebrity craze that's been carried on.
I spend my days thinking about my laundry pile, after I put the first load on I'm wandering how long it's gonna be til the next one. Am I addicted to laundry???

I think it's possible that a small amount of people are sex addicts not every cheating Tom, Dick and Harry.
