Looking for advice on sleep patterns for a 21 month old

I guess I'll put it in the Debating forum because often these things get heated! ;)

Usually my son goes down for a nap at around noon, and sleeps until 3. Then he goes to bed at 7 or 7:30 and sleeps through until 7 or 8 the next morning. Even though this is a lot more sleep than some kids his age get, I think it's good for him, based on his behaviour when he gets that much sleep vs the days when he doesn't.

Here's the problem: This week, he's been staying up for an hour or more when I put him down for his nap (not crying, but sometimes shouting, complaining, and chatting with his stuffed animals or making mischief by getting all his bedding wet with his sippy cup) Then he sleeps later, almost until supper. Sometimes I feel bad and go and get him (and change him because of the sippy cup mischief), then put him down later, like 2:30, but as soon as he wakes up he's SO MAD about everything, and it feels like something is wrong with him.

I don't know what to think. If he doesn't need such a long nap, why is he sticking his thumb in his mouth and lying down on soft things in the morning before I put him down? And if I do take out or shorten his nap, do I need to do something crazy like put him to bed at 6?

Today we were outside and shopping all morning, and he was in bed by 12:30. He muttered and played until 1:30ish, when he finally fell asleep, and stayed sleeping until 4:30. Then during his bath at 7, my husband told him not to play with the faucet and he cried hysterically for a long time (not normal for our easy-going boy) which makes me think he's over-tired.

Anybody have ideas for me?

Welcome to the terrible twos, they can be much worse then the 3s. Personally I would drop the afternoon nap for a week and see how things go. My children dropped all naps by 1 to 1 1/2, in turn they all went to bed at 8 pm and would sleep until 8 am.

It sounds to me hes realized he doesnt have to nap he can play and do other things with his time, perfectly normal for his age.
