This man is claiming he is suffering from PSTD as a result of his actions. He killed 100 dogs as population control due to a failed business, his defense? He was following orders.
He used a rifle, a shotgun and a knife, he buried them in a mass grave, some of them still alive..
What do you think, should he be in a mental institution or jail?

I don't know. I live where this happened. He was faced with the choice of allowing them to starve slowly to death as he had no money to feed them, releasing them, going public or killing them. I do not think he made the right choice, and I seriously wonder about his mental and empathetic capacities but from what has been talked about in our local media, he did make great efforts to find someone, anyone to save them. A couple of "rescue" organizations he contacted first claimed that they never heard of him, but it turned out they were lying. What kind of rescuers just guilt-trip a desperate guy and leave the dogs to die? There are a LOT of people to blame in this scenario, from the government regulators, to the company owners, to the rescue societies & SPCA, and the guy who committed this horrific crime.

The one thing it brought to mind for me though, is I wonder if mafia hitmen can also claim PTSD from their jobs. If they work for a "legit" businessman and are on payroll, they would pay into WCB and be entitled to payouts for job related stresses. If this guy got it, why couldn't they. Not to mention that our WCB NEVER reported this crime to the cops, an employee leaked the info to the media after he was given the payout. Seriously questionable ethics on behalf of our Worker's Comp Board.

That's honestly the thing that bothers me the most Tara. Obviously there are depraved human beings like this man walking among us, and sadly, there isn't much we can do to prevent them from enacting cruelty upon the living. With no prior criminal record, it's not as if there was some sort of notice that he'd off and commit this slaughter. The thing that really gets me is that the WCB knew about it and did nothing. Sick. Doctors, social workers, etc. all have a "duty to report" when they hear of a crime that has been committed or know of a crime that will be committed. Does the WCB not have the same rules? And why not? Can you get coverage for PTSD if you shot a bunch of your colleagues in a fit of anger at work? Their role in this is really disturbing.

I know if he had contacted the media about this, those dogs would have lived. If he had written to Dog Town some other dog show, they would have gotten enough press coverage to have those dogs adopted out to people all over the continent.
He didn't try hard enough in my opinion. And he admitted to having previously killed dogs as part of his job (culled is the correct word but sounds wrong in this case)
but then suddenly after brutally murdering 100 dogs he has a break down??
WSB approved his claim of disability and yet didn't call the police to report this heinous act of animal abuse?

I heard about this recently - notice how they hardly mention the Olympics link. It makes me sick - in Alberta there have been a number of concerted rescues by animal groups where sled dogs have been at this kind of risk and I have no doubt that if dude had gone public about it, the dogs would have been saved. This is fucking horrific and I hope they nail his ass, together with OAW and the WCB, to the wall.

Thanks for posting this, Tara.

What a load of bullshit. No one told him to inhumanely kill the dogs. He should be in gaol.

Do you have mental hospitals that are jails like Broadmoor in UK?

If this man killed so many dogs and has PTSD (which I do not know much about) is he likely to harm people? in which case he should be in solitary confinement wherever he ends up.

And if he has successfully proven the PTSD diagnosis, he would also be likely judged as "not fit to stand trial". Our legal system just isn't that strict, especially not where animals are concerned.

He should be declared non-human and thrown out of the race.

It is not PTSD. Its genuine remorse but he doesn't FEEL remorse. He's not sorry at all. If he offs himself. I'll believe he actually felt bad. But I don't. After ONE HUNDRED killings he suddenly feels bad? fuck him.
