I'm with Carol on this one. I don't really give two shits about Miley. My daughter is too young to know her and I haven't exposed myself to her enough to have a real opinion. I haven't seen the video in question, and wouldn't have a problem with an on-screen kiss necessarily.

The concept of the transition from child to young woman automatically involving revealing clothes and sexualised performances is what I take issue with. She's posed for nude magazine spreads if I'm not mistaken. Covered or not, that is inappropriate for a teenager IMO. It is portraying an over-sexed image that 15 year olds just don't need.

I always love that they keep saying she's 17. I guess "technically" she still is but she will be 18 on November 23rd.

Also, role model, smole model is what I say. She was a Disney kid but she's not anymore. My parents were 6 years apart. My grandparents? 10 years apart. My mom was 19 when she met my dad...my grandmother was 17. Yes, I realize it was a long time ago but maturity hasn't changed, in my opinion. Girls are more mature than guys.

I wish people would leave this girl alone. She's an entertainer. If people don't like what she does, then don't watch...that's my opinion of the whole thing!

Wow mini skirts ( usually denim ) are a summer wadrobe staple around here , every one has on , my mum has one ( she has great legs LOL ) !

I know people like to preserve the famous especially young ones but Miley is getting closer to becoming an adult and she needs to find her own identity reguardless of what her fans or society want her to be she is an individual person and as an actor and entertainer i could imagine it would be a hundred times harder to find your identity when your swimming a world of characters .
I know i can look back at photos and say "wow what was i wearing " but you know every phase i went through was one step closer to becoming me .

I don't really follow Miley and the latest trends with her but isnt kissing a 26 year old for a video the same as say kirsten dunst kissing tom cruise for a movie(interview with a vampire).... wasnt she like 11 or something? i mean these are both work related and are viewed as completly legal.....doesnt that make it a bit of a stereotype?

Edited to say.....

I don't remember there being a huge uproar with that...I just remember everyone thinking that Kirsten Dunst was SO lucky to have gotten to kiss a huge hunky(personally, i dont find tom cruise attractive at all....) movie star

Age of consent has to do with SEX people...not kissing. My goodness. She kissed a 26 year old guy in a video...so the hell what. She was acting. KISSING is not illegal, it's SEX where one is under a certain age and the other is above a certain age where it can become a legal issue.

Here's a good site that talks about age of consent for SEX!

In my opinion if 18 is the legal age, then she should wait until she is 18 to kiss a 26 year old boy. Exactly young teens look up to her so what kind of example is she setting by doing this.

[deleted account]

Role model my arse...my role models were my parents not singers. I don't think it matters that she's kissing a 26 year old...she's 17 and over the age of consent anyways and here in the UK kissing someone under the age of consent isn't illegal lmao! Someone I went to sixth form with is with somone ten years older then her and to me it's wierd but if they're happy so be it =] Kissing a minor being illegal is pathetic......

Loureen, the legal age here is 18 so if you're under 18 and someone older kisses you then they are kissing minor, which is illegal (technically). I think each state can be different too though, some of them might allow for a 17 yr old to kiss someone older.
It's been a big issue here sometimes because boys have gone to prison for being 18 while their girlfriends were 17, the parents don't like the boys and they press charges. On top of that, the boys are labeled as child molesters. It's a law that needs some changing, obviously.

Hell No! thats just asking for more trouble. She should be setting an example. My 12 year old daugther was complaining the other day that she a bad example to girls her age, and that she wouldn't listen to he music anymore. I am at least proud to say she has a mind of her own that can make sensible choices and won't follow the crowd.

I never saw celebrities as role models as a kid. Maybe coz I'm Australian and here we just make fun of people rather than worship celebrities. Britney Spears was big when I was about 10 and I see nothing wrong with wearing bikinis to the beach and shorts and a singlet, it's hot here.

I actually dont have a problem with her age and her boyfriend 5 years isnt that much as for the guy in the film clip , she was acting so was he in a paid gig like someone else said earlier kirsten dunst was a little girl when she kissed tom cruise in interview/WTV
She is 17 her boyfriend is 22 i actually think thats a nice gap , i know quiet a few people who were and still are in relationships with the same gap starting around the same age .

And here in Australia it isnt illegal for a 17 year old to kiss an older guy , as far as im aware anyone over the age of consent can kiss who they like as for the kissing in the video isnt it a recent video wasnt she 17 when it was made ?

One thing about whether she's a role model or not, when you're catering to a younger demographic, you put yourself in the role of becoming a role model. Don't want to be one, don't go after the kiddies.

I think it's pretty messed up for an underage girl to be kissing a MAN. It's illegal. What I find more bothersome is that her overage boyfriend lives with her and her parents. Two years ago she was 15 with a 20 yr old boyfriend who lived with them too. Her parents are messed up.

I'm absolutely not a fan of Miley - I find her "talent" to be "talentless" - but regardless....

I do agree that she has to grow up - obviously....and unfortunately that is happening in the spotlight and the scrutinizing eye of the public. I do think that she hasn't made the best choices....but isn't that the case for everyone? Everyone makes mistakes.....just not in the spotlight.

I also think - at least for me - I loved to have crushes on celebrities while growing up...and to look up to the famous women and teens of the early 90's...but they were never my role models. Role models were my teachers, and relatives.

I do not allow my 8 year old daughter to wear short skirts, not because I feel that she is too young, but that I feel it is immodest for her to wear clothing that appears as if it were made for a child 3 sizes smaller.
I think allowing her to dress how she likes to an extent is fine. So we compromise, she can wear the short skirts if they have the sewn in shorts. or she wears the thick wooly tights. But the idea of her wearing a short skirt, boots and bare legs to me is sexualizing her in a way.
It's unfortunate but true that people do make assumptions about others based on appearance, and personally when I see a young girl dressed in a short mini, tight tank top and ankle boots, I think it's inappropriate and trashy looking, sort of along the same lines as pageants turn me off, so does that style of dress on children.
I don't think "oh she must be a whore or slut." but more "Why does she dress like she wants people to think she is a bad ass, open for business kind of girl".
I want her to dress appropriately for her age. That's all. And as far as I'm concerned there is no age for a micro mine, no undies and the rest.
But that's my taste.

i agree with cathy. she's an actor playing a part in a video, or on stage. she's there to entertain. it's not her fault who her target audience happens to be. if you are uncomfortable with her appearance or music, then don't let your kid watch or listen to her. simple.

and to address the adult means wearing slutty clothes thing. i do see what carol is saying, but on the same token people don't want short shorts and skimpy clothes on children, so the only logical place for those things to be associated with is an adult. hence how people automatically link the 2 together. :)

Entertainers are not role models, they're entertainers and that is where their responsibility to society ends. Explain to your kids that they are individuals too and they make different choices and have different experiences then the rest of us.

[deleted account]

I think even role models have to grow up. While I don't care one way or another about Miley, I think we need to let her grow up, role model or not. If a parent doesn't like the way in which she is growing up, then they need to not allow their kids to look at / listen to it. In my opinion, a not so small part of the reason things went so horribly wrong with Brittney Spears is because she grew up, but the rest of the world kept reminding her of how much of a role model she was to young girls. When really, the young girls (13ish and younger) who idolized her when she was 17 and starting to get nasty shouldn't have been even allowed to watch that stuff, IMO.

I'll be sure to tell my daughters not to wear short skirts for fear that someone may then perceive them to be a slut or whore. Hmm....I wonder if that would then make it OK to make crude comments, or even rape them? After all, that is the look they're portraying, right?

@ Jenn... wearing a short skirt does not make you a trashy whore, but it may make the people who are seeing you think you are. I have been known to wear short skirts, and it was at a time in my life where I didn't care if that was the image I projected. But I wasn't silly enough to think that everyone would just know that I wasn't. People make assumptions based on appearances. If you don't like the assumptions, then don't portray the look.

Cathy, I'd agree that the video isn't that bad. And no, short doesn't automatically mean slutty, it's pretty much in the way it is done. Right now, here, short skirts with thick tights and slouchy boots are popular for teen girls, and it doesn't look slutty at all. I was actually more thinking about Miley's stripper pole performance in regards to this thread. I'm not sure I could see how anyone could argue that it didn't portray a hyper-sexualized image of an underage girl? It's not just about the video, it's about how it seems that as teen singers get to a certain age, the "machine" determines that it is time for them to become a "sex symbol" so that they can show the world that they've grown up. What ever happened to just making better, more adult music?

Like I said, it's an image. It projects an idea about who and what you are. Whether or not that is the truth, doesn't matter when people look. Unfortunately, most people make blanket assumptions and base their behavior on what they see on the surface. It sends a message, especially to boys, that a girl is "available".

And I ask again, why does dressing "slutty" and sexing it up get connected to "growing up"?

I think the point is that it IS possible to project a "cool" and hip image without going the trashy whore route. NOT that I think she is a trashy whore or looks like one and no I haven't seen the video.

AND I made a mistake and in my original comment, I wasn't thinking so much of the video in question as her advertised off screen behaviours.

Thankfully my daughter is not so much a Miley/Hannah fan any more. Because I don't like the way she presenting herself very much.

But its a harsh switch for our girls to go from the Hannah image to the new Miley image.

As for the video - I have no issues with who she kisses. She's an actress and at 17 she's adult enough for a stage kiss. Trust me, from what I've seen in parking lots and bus stops, thats mild for what our teens are doing.

NOT that I approve of it.

Really, my biggest issues is how my daughter would reconcile the two images of Miley vs. Hannah in relation to herself.

But this is my point - why do clothes = slut? The way you dress has nothing to do with your sexual behaviour. Lots of girls I knew in school wore short skirts and those thigh high tights because that was the style then, just like now kids wear what's in style - ripped jeans, mini skirts - it's all the same recycled fashions from 20 years ago. I don't see how that means you're giving blowjobs behind the school and being a slut.

Johnny - posted on 11/04/2010

It does not make someone a slut. I never said that Miley was a slut. I said that it projects an image. That image is connected to an idea about how people behave and about what they value. Often when young people follow an image, be it slutty-dressed music star or gangsta rapper, they don't just dress the part. They act the part too. I suppose if it doesn't matter to you that teenage girls might be walking around in super short mini's and CFM boots giving boys blow jobs behind the school gym, then you'd be okay with it. I'm saddened by the fact that as mature adults, we seem to connect "growing up" with dressing like a slut. I always thought "growing up" was about learning how to behave responsibly and make positive life choices.

So in one breath you can say that she's a child and shouldn't be dressing the way she is and kissing men, then in the next breath it's OK to call her ugly?!? So we're all cool with calling kids ugly now? Wow! :/ And perhaps her music isn't your style, but I'd be willing to put money on her sounding better than ANY of us on here. And if her Dad is a dork, well then I like dorks! He's made more money than most people and seems to be real and didn't get sucked into the Hollywood lifestyle - seems to me he's actually quite successful and intelligent.

Johnny - posted on 11/04/2010

I'm slightly perplexed as to why so many people seem to connect wearing slutty clothes to growing up? Is it not possible for an artist to become more mature and change their audience as they grow without going the Christina Aguilera Dirty route? I've got no real issue with the kiss or the acting, but this idea that we're telling teenage girls that become a grown up is the same as becoming a slut. Miley Cyrus herself seems like a nice, fine person with some talent, the image, I can do without.

Considering I have an 8 year old who worships the ground she walks on, I'm not too happy about the clothing of late. But that said, she is growing up and she is allowed to do so, it just means that I have to be more scrutinizing when we are deciding which videos we allow her to watch. She loves the music mostly so we try to just keep it to the cd player or her mp3 player and not much in the way of visuals.
She's a big girl now, let her be one. I think she has a horrible voice and isn't very pretty at all, but I just hope that as she grows up she doesn't go down the same road as Britney etc.
As much as I think her dad is the biggest achy breaky dork in the world, he seems to really have a good relationship with her and is protective but realistic about her hollywood life.
