Do you read Neil Gaiman to your kids? Have you heard him read? What do you think of him?

Crazy Hair

I loved this book from the moment I saw it. The art is beautiful and I really liked the way things were worded. My son loved and repeated certain parts to himself, like, "twisting, tangling trails and loops. Treasure chests and pirate sloops.."

The Graveyard Book

I checked the audio book out from the library and have listened to it with my son and on my own. I worried it wouldn't be the right book for me when I first started listening to it, because it starts with a man killing a family, but the way the scene was described was so clever and appropriate for a child to hear. The event was moved past quickly and well and the rest of the book was amazing. I really liked it. I almost wish it had gone on longer.

Neil Gaiman read this book himself and his voice is just incredible. I got another book of his on audiobook and it was read by someone else and it just wasn't the same.

Mirror Mask

I went to the theatre to see this movie and IMO it was eye candy. I found it boring. After I went to see it, I was ready to dismiss Neil Gaiman and move on with my life. Luckily one of my friends let me borrow their copy of Coraline and I read it and it restored my faith in Gaiman.

Stardust was great! But Neverwhere (the book) is awesome. Mind the Gap. ;D

I love Neil Gaiman, he's one of my fav authors. I love love love his short stories. American Gods was a great book. I really liked Stardust, too. And if any of you read graphic novels, he does Sandman as well.

My son is still a little young for Gaiman but he'll be hearing his stories soon.

I love Neil Gaiman. My daughter is not really old enough to understand his books yet. I do love American Gods though, if you're into Gaiman as an adult writer.

Butcher is awesome. He really can draw you in. I like the Dresden series. And no, the TV show was NOTHING like the books. The show sucked. :P

Terry Pratchett is funny but I've never read Jim Butcher. Another good fantasy author for kids (I'd say starting around age 8-10 and up) is Garth Nix. I like his stuff as well.

My other favorite fantasy authors are Terry Pratchett and Jim Butcher. Terry Pratchett is okay for kids but Jim Butcher is definitely an adults-only author. :)

so I was looking through shel silverstein's poems and I recognized one. When I was a kid, Invitation was one of my favorite poems:

INVITATION

If you are a dreamer, come in.
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer . . .
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire,
For we have some flax golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!

I had it posted on my door when I was 8 or 9 years old.

Very neat.

The first paragraph in the book is different from the first paragraph that he reads out loud. Both versions are good:)

Shel Silverstein is an old folk singer/poet from the 60's and has AMAZING poetry books that I loved as a child, and now my 5 year old loves them.

I am now officially in love with Crazy Hair! I have taught Shel Silverstein's poem "Sarah Sylvia Cynthis Stout" in my poetry unit for many years, and now I am adding "Crazy Hair". Awesome!

Crazy hair - Neil Gaimen

This is Bonnie, this is me
I am 40, Bonnie is 3.
She says: "I don't mean to stare.
Mister, you got crazy hair"

Crazy hair, oh me oh my
Crazy hair I thought I'd die
I said: "miss how do you dare
Talk about my crazy hair?

This hair you know, is all my own.
Since I was two, my hair has grown.
Birds fly down from everywhere
nesting in my crazy hair.

Butterflies and cockatoos,
reds and yellow greens and blues,
make me look beyond compare
walking with my crazy hair.

In my hair, gorillas leaps
Tigers stalk and ground sloth sleep.
Prides of lions makes their lair,
somewhere in my crazy hair.

Hunters sending expeditions
writing back their positions
still we lost a dozen there.
Lost inside my crazy hair.

you hear music? dances too?
I can hear them well, can you?
They play tunes beyond compare!
Dancing trough my crazy hair.

Huge balloons comes down to land
People weave, it's very grand.
They take off from everywhere
drifting cross my crazy hair...

There are pools and water slides
carousels and pony rides
all the fun at every faire
waits inside my crazy hair.

Twisting tangling trails and loops
treasure chests and pirates loots
Those awaits you once you dare
navigate my crazy hair!

"here's my comb" young Bonnie said
"run it now across your head.
That is what I do, with great care,
when I have such crazy hair"

"Child, are you mad?" I cried
"combs and brushes has bee tried!
One was eaten by a bear
brought into my crazy hair."

Bonnie said: "you bend down here
I will comb it, is that clear?"
I said: "miss, just be aware
this is really crazy hair."

I bent down, and Bonnie swiped
Combed and carried rubbed and wiped
"now!" she said,"you look..." but there,
came a rumbling from my hair.

one huge growling head peered out
said: "what is this all about?"
one huge arm reached out of there
pulled her in my crazy hair.

Bonnie has the finest time
teaching lions how to rhyme.
riding slides and red balloons
finding hunters loosing moons

play with the pretty birds
teaching parrots naughty words
sewing up the pirates west
digging buried treasure chests

Hibernating with the bear
dancing with the dancers there
happy as a millionaire
safe inside my crazy hair.

I love Neil Gaiman, Nico's only two, but I've saved all my previously read Gaiman books for when he's older. All my other old books as well, actually.
