New mom BF Monkey!

Consider this the coolest -- and strangest -- breastfeeding story you'll read all week. A monkey in China has all the breast milk she could use -- human breast milk that is. The wife of a vet at the zoo in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, heard a lion-tailed macaque at the zoo had been abandoned by its mother and would die without sustenance.

Having just given birth to her own child, Splash News says the woman offered to donate her own milk. Kudos to her, but this puts donor milk in a whole new realm, doesn't it?

This is no Tori Amos with a piglet to her breast. Pictures show the little guy with a bottle in his mouth, so it's pretty safe to say she pumped and dumped to breastfeed. And it worked! After two months of human breast milk, the monkey -- who is one of only 3,500 of his kind remaining in the world -- has doubled his weight and he's healthy.

Said feeder Yang Yi, "The best food for a newborn is breast milk." It's worked before -- one woman saved not one but two baby pandas with her breast milk at a Beijing zoo. Huzzah!

But, please, let's not all run out to the zoo and offer up our boobies. The standard donation banks in America are for women with an overabundance of milk who donate so premies and babies with medical conditions can partake. But it's hard to get in if you're in need. Just ask Neil Patrick Harris -- the actor and proud new papa has reportedly been having a tough time getting a hold of breast milk for his daughter Harper Grace. He's a celebrated actor with a hearty bank account. He would have been better off as a monkey.

These sort of novelty acts are heartwarming on the one hand, but entirely depressing on the other. Zoos shouldn't have to depend on this kind of good Samaritan, and hospitals shouldn't either. With the number of rabid breastfeeding supporters out there (not that that's a bad thing!) the best way to support the cause is to fill the breast milk banks with the way blood banks are filled -- with regular drives and regular donations.

If one mom can breastfeed a monkey, you can breastfeed a child in need. What do you say?

Its so normal for a cow to donate to humans, but the other way around is apparently surprising. What a backwards world :P

I think it's great, although I too would rather donate to a human than a monkey. Just because there are many human babies out there who need the milk too. I have actually donated to a human baby.
I am glad she pumped and gave the monkey the milk in a bottle, not straight from the breast. I read a story once about a woman who breastfed her dog right from her breast. Ick!

awwwwh---- i think its sweet. I actually donated some of my milk simply b/c my chest freezer couldnt hold any more, and i dindt want it going to waste. I would totally donate to a monkey baby in need!!!!!

I think it's really sweet that the monkey lived and thrived thanks to donated human breast milk. I would much rather see human milk go to human babies, like Neil Patrick Harris's daughter but's a warm fuzzy that there's a rare species monkey out there alive because of breast milk.

Edited to remove my semi-snarky remark.

yea sherri i seen that, and my comment was not directed at you :P if it was, it would have your name in it.

I think it's pretty cool and would do it in a heartbeat, I would also donate to a milk bank if I was lactating.

Sherri, no one even said anything about breast milk being the only way, you're the one who brought it up.

The post wasn't to start a debate about breast v formula, just a warm fuzzy :)

oh man, i want to donate to Neil Patrick Harris!!! mean, his daughter... i am so in love with that gay man hahahah.

as for donating to a monkey? nah, i'd rather donate to a human...but that because i'm not around a monkey that needs my milk. if i were the wife of a zoo vet, i honestly probably would. does anyone know what this monkey would have been given if this woman had not donated???

If there were a breastmilk bank where I live I would be more than willing to donate to it.
If this actor dude wants to pay for mine to be shipped to him, he can have all I can pump out. (which isn't much at this stage of the game!)
I have always been a supporter of milk banks and hope they become more readily available to people in need.
I'd donate to the zoo, but would rather donate to people.

My moms cat had kitties, and the mom refused to feed them, so me and my sis pumped and gave it to the kitties, they died anyways though :(
