I am a Gemini, and I have always proudly identified with my sign and its attributes. But now, scientists say I'm not a Gemini? According to these new zodiac sign dates they've introduced, you may be reading the horoscope for the wrong astrological sign too.

It's all very scientific and has to do with the moon's gravitation pull of the earth and how things have shifted over the years, but astronomers at the Minnesota Planetarium Society say it's so. Apparently, the way the stars are really aligned mean a lot of people think they're a sign they're really not.

"This is not something that happened today. This has gone on for thousands of years," astronomer Parke Kunkle told NBC-2. "Because of this change of tilt, the Earth is really over here in effect and Sun is in a different constellation than it was 3,000 years ago."

Thanks for telling us now!

Important life decisions have been made according to horoscopes; jewelry and clothing proclaiming one's sign have been purchased. Lives have been forever altered because someone in a bar didn't like the response they heard when they asked one of the most famous pick-up lines of all time: "Hey baby, what's your sign?" They can't just go and change it!

But they have. Here are the new dates, see if yours is affected:

Capricorn: Jan. 20 – Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 – March 11
Pisces: March 11– April 18
Aries: April 18 – May 13
Taurus: May 13 – June 21
Gemini: June 21 – July 20
Cancer: July 20 – Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10 – Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16 – Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30 – Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23 – Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 – Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 – Jan. 20

Well, I for one refuse to accept it -- science or not. The description of Gemini has always fit me accurately. Now I'm supposed to be a Taurus? I want to be a twin, not a bull! I'm an extrovert, not an introvert! Gemini is the sign of writers; the twins help explain my mood swings. And I'm going to continue to be a Gemini regardless of what anyone says. I'm stubborn like that ... which is a hallmark trait of Taurus. Hmmm ...

Does your sign change under these new dates? Are you going to start reading your new horoscope?

Awwww I was actually pleased!
I'm right near the cusp of Capricorn and Sagittarius, but have always felt more like a Sagittarius! With the "new" signs, I would have been!

Ah well!

AND I FEEL LIKE AN ASS............

Today much of world's blood pressure went through the roof with news that our astrological signs as we know them are all wrong. People were ready to end relationships, remove tattoos, and hawk heirloom jewelry because of a "new" report that the earth has moved on its axis and is now out of line with the stars. But astrologers are calling the new zodiac signs 2011 bogus, and say we all panicked for nothing.

In an article titled Here We Go Again with the "Zodiac Is Wrong" Scam, astrologer Rob Brezsny explains how this isn't the first time panic has set in about zodiac changes, and why it's ridiculous.

"News Flash: The zodiac isn't wrong. Your sign isn't changing. Ignore the misinformation."

Oh how I want to believe him and go back to my Gemini status, but how can he dispute the sage wisdom of scientists?

He says it happens about once a year, and minces no words about how he feels about scientists meddling in astrology. He specifically calls out Parke Kunkle from the Minnesota Planetarium Society, who's behind the recent bout of hysteria.

"I understand that scientists like him would prefer not to lower themselves to the task of actually doing research about how astrology works. But if they're going to question its foundations, they should at least learn it well enough to know what they're talking about."

He says Western astrologers don't do their work based on stars, but rather on "the patterns of planets and the moon as they pass through 12 zones defined by the relationship between the Earth and sun." He said while the zones have the same names as constellations, they're not related to them. Therefore, no one's sign needs to change.

And Brezsny is right, this has happened before. In October 2007, Live Science published an article titled Your Astrological Sign May Not Be What You Think It Is. It basically contained the same information we're panicking about today, but for some reason didn't erupt into mass hysteria like today. I'm guessing that has something (or everything) to do with the growth of social media like Facebook and Twitter. How many posts about the new zodiac signs of 2011 and Ophiuchus did you see today?

So, phew! it sounds like we can all relax, and go back to our original signs and personalities if we choose to believe astrologers. Gemini, I'm back! But if you were digging your new sign and choose the more scientific opinion of astronomers, then have at it. And if on a day you don't particularly like your horoscope, feel free to choose the other one.

Are you relieved to know that your astrological sign can remain the same?

Interesting Becky, I'll have to go check that out, because it's headline news everywhere.
Well Yahoo and Time and such. I wonder why they did that?

An ASTRONOMER came up with this nonsense not an Astrologer. The 13th sign is very very old news. Check the forums at astro.com and see what astrologers are saying about this.

There are still 12 signs in the zodiac. There has been no changes.

what!! one day off not being a virgo!! but me and my sister are classic virgos! and my son is a classic scorpio trust me he is no Libra

[deleted account]

I don't care what the article says, I'm still a Cancer through and through. I can see traits of me in all of the signs, but Cancer is usually dead on.

Red-headed, Irish Cancer. Temper much? LOL

[deleted account]

No it isnt. The Julian calender was introduced in 37bc which had only ten months.

The Gregorian calendar (the one we use currently) was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII, after whom the calendar was named, by a decree signed on 24 February 1582.

Before the Julian calendar was the 13 month calendar based on the natural 13 times the moon orbits the earth each year...

I saw on Yahoo that this was because the Earth had tilted. I didn't see anything about it being 2009-2010. I looked at Yahoo and Time....

Mine wouldn't have changed either way, but where does it say that it is only for those born after 2010? And why is that? That makes no sense to me. How can someone have the same birthday as you, but a different horoscope?

Whelp, mine would change, my fiance's would change and my daughter's would change...however we were all born before 2010 so whatever. I'm a classic Taurus, my bro is an Aries and I don't fit it at all.

Not to mention that would make my fiance a Sag...and Sag men and me make awesome lovers but wicked evil partners. He's not at all like my Sag exes.

I'll stick to the old farts way.

Well, I have always identified as a Libra, it has fit me to a T. My sister-in-law, upon finding out my zodiac sign (she's really into this stuff and I'll have to send her this link for the fun of it!) couldn't believe just how "Libra-ish" I am! Now I'm supposed to be a Virgo and I can't find one trait that I actually identify with. My sister is (or was I guess, or actually, still is! lol) a virgo and she fits that description to a T, but not me. I like the idea of the 13 months and could go with it, but my "new" zodiac doesn't fit me at all.

[deleted account]

Apparently my whole families now changed.
My son born last year is now changed to a gemini. Well i refuse to go with it because i already have a tattoo of his sign on my ankle along with my other 2 children.

[deleted account]

I believe they are trying to fix a great injustice. Its not just the zodiac signs. The months of the year was changed, removing the 13 month. Its suppose to line up to the 13 moon phases and the astrological changes throughout the year. The 13 zodiac changes is just the beginning, its part of the Mayan prediction. Soon the months will go back to ancient times as well so we can flow better with nature and be more connected to natural time. It makes so much more sense then what goes on now. If the months were to change as well then there would be 13 months all with 28 days, each month would have 4 weeks and every 1st would be a sunday and the 28th would be a saterday. 364 days of time, then one day a year when time doesnt exist. Its much more simple..

Its not a new sign, the ancient Babylonians got rid of it 2000 years ago.
They chose to start it back up again in 2010, but it does actually effect all zodiac signs. The 12 list was wrong.

COOOOOOOOL

I wish I was an Ophiuchus , the serpent holder .

Read this it's really interesting .

New Zodiac sign 2012

Amazon.com Widgets
Ophiuchus
According to astrologial principles, the Sun travels from the constellation Scorpius and goes directly into the sign of Sagittarius, but due to the constant motion of the cosmos, the Sun enters, for a few days of the year, the star constellation 'Ophiuchus' before entering Sagittarius from Scorpius, thus creating astrologically the birth of a thirteenth sign of the Zodiac, which is named as Ophiuchus the Serpent Holder.
The constellation of Ophiuchus is the only sign of the Zodiac which is linked to a real man. This man lived in ancient Egypt around the 27th century BC, and his name was Imhotep. The attributes of Imhotep can also be found in the Biblical Hebrew man Joseph, son of Jacob.. Imhotep is credited with many accomplishments including the knowledge and use of medicine. It is said of Imhotep that he brought the art of healing to mankind. The symbol of a serpent, which is still widely used today to represent the medical profession, was used to represent Imhotep. Imhotep was also known as 'Aesclepius' to the ancient Greeks

ATTRIBUTES THAT DESCRIBE THE SIGN OF OPHIUCHUS
• interpreter of dreams, premonitions
• attracts good luck
• serpent holder
• lofty ideals
• a seeker of peace and harmony
• doctor of medicine or science
• to add, increase, join or gather together
• poetical, inventive nature, expanding
• seeks higher education
• overseer, supervisor of work
• fame - either grand or completely misunderstood
• longevity, aspirations of healing the ills of man
• architect, builder, reaches for the stars
• tax assessor or levys taxes
• astrological talents, intuitive
• large family indicated, but apt to be separated from them when young
• the number twelve holds great significance
• foresight to benefit from hard times
• has secret enemies in family or close associations
• many jealous of this subject
• notable father, apple of father's eye when young
• high position in life expected [depending on aspects] highest fame and legend comes after death however
• feelings of granular, wise,
• likes to wear clothing of vibrant colors
• receives the favor of those in charge
Ophiuchus in the Planetary Zodiac:
The planet Pluto was found in Ophiuchus until the end of 2003, after which it passed into Serpens Cauda, the Serpent's Tail. The Centaur object, the minor planetoid Chiron, was visible against the stars of Ophiuchus until November 2001, after which it passed over the border into Sagittarius. Venus and Mercury can be found in Ophiuchus for a time each year.

Could do Jullianne I don't know , Im not an astrologer from what I am reading online it is conflicting .

Still cool though .

[deleted account]

OMG so my true-to-an-aries self is a pisces now?! wtf that is so weird. Thats like how they say pluto doesnt count as a planet now, you dont think it would make a difference but it does. You go your whole life thinking one thing and pfft some person is like "No!" I dunno I get along with pisces people the best they're my favourite sign so not really much of a biggie.

"they only effect children born in 2010"

Oh well, in that case, I'm still a screwed up Virgo.

Why did they have to throw in a new one though? Now it outdates all those Trivial Pursuit questions......

[deleted account]

I for one am glad that they added a 13th sign. Its a step in the right direction. There are 13 moon phases in a year, thats why 13 signs should be there. the Mayan calendar has 13 months. It fits perfectly, there should be 13 zodiac signs and 13 months. It makes a lot more sense then the crazy nonsense we follow now.
