Newt's Morals

So, I'm hearing a lot of liberals spouting the kind of stuff about Newt's moral character that they would have attacked conservatives for if they were talking about Clinton's ability to govern despite his sexual adventures.

Personally, I don't think who a man/woman has sex with or how they act in their private sexual lives has anything to do with how they govern. This goes for people from both sides of the aisle

I think Newt shouldn't govern because his views are bat shit crazy, but there seems to be a real double among the liberals out there. I get it, Newt is crazy...let's attack him the way he attacked Clinton...or at least that's what Newt's ex thinks:

From ABC interview:

"All this happened, she said, during the same time Gingrich condemned President Bill Clinton for his lack of moral leadership."

So what do you think? Does a person's sex life affect their ability to govern and is there some hypocritical bashing going on out their from liberals (and I as this as a liberal) that should know better?

The only reason why Newt's love life is at all relevant is because a) Republicans continually tout themselves as being the "party of family values". So the irony is just too delicious to resist, and b) he is against same-sex marriage. So if he is going to talk about gays threatening the sanctity of marriage, then I think he absolutely opens up his OWN marriage habits to scrutiny.

That being said, though, I do hope that people focus more on his positions. There's a lot to work with...

I don't think I care too much about Newt's sex life (or any other politician's sex life -- I'm Canadian, and you guys can't imagine how bizarre American political rhetoric on "morals" and sex and religion looks from up here). I do care about other aspects of his moral character, however, such as the fact that he is, as far as I have been able to determine, sexist, racist, homophobic, and batshit insane with respect to most important policy issues. The details of his past marriages, and the fact that he's publicly campaigned against marriage equality despite having a daughter who's gay, certainly don't make me more sympathetic towards him, but you're right, we really should be focusing on candidates' policy platforms and their political records, not on their sexual histories or what churches they belong to.

It doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the blatent and yet oh-so-ignored hypocrisy! Clinton was bad for getting a blow job and (to quote the vile Dr Laura) 'taught all our young people that oral sex isn't sex at all' but Newt is ok with HIS continuous affairs and multiple marriages.

Rebecca, I didn't mean it doesn't matter (and actually I'm a dual citizen, although I was born in Canada and have lived here most of my life, so I even vote in US elections), just that we tend to look at the whole travelling circus and think either "Dude! What's with the obsession with politicians' sex lives and religious affiliations?" or "OMFG are these policy platforms for real?!"

It absolutely matters. It matters enormously. There's a famous story about a Canadian PM (I think it was Trudeau, but I could be wrong) saying that sharing a border with the US is like being in bed with an elephant -- everything that happens there has repercussions up here. Just ask anyone who works for any business that sells in the US (which is most of them) ...

We're simultaneously fascinated and repelled by these kinds of antics in US politics, because we feel like there's a possibility someone like Newt could actually be elected, and who the hell knows what would happen?

Sylvia, I can imagine what US politics are like from a Canadian view...I live in Canada and am an American. It is true the political climate in Canada is different...although Harper seems to be swinging things towards a more American tone.

I think though, what happens in American politics actually does matter in Canada. So much of the Canadian economy and manufacturing is tied into that monster under the stairs.

Believe me, I'd love to close my eyes and drive on by the car wreck part of the border, but it does affect us up here.

Of course, that has little to do with Newt and his little Newt and what he does with it. God, just thinking of him naked makes me a bit barfy. Why can't Obama get involved in something like this just for visualization reasons....I don't mind picturing him naked.

Elfrieda, I think we are!! My dog had more sexual morals, and that was before I had him fixed! He also didn't look over the neighbors fence and scream "WHORE" at their dog!

I'm really disappointed here - I thought we were going to talk about the moral life of amphibians... :)

I'm Canadian, haven't been following all the hoopla. Kind of like when you see a family reunion in someone's front yard where all the crazy relatives are bickering, throwing plates and swearing... the politest thing to do is just avert your eyes and keep on walking! Good luck, you guys!

Clinton WAS bashed for his morals, but it was lying under oath that really pee'd me off, and many others. The sex bothered me a bit, as she was very young and he was her supierior and all, but my real thoughts were 'why in the hell do I even know about it!?!" And that sums up my thoughts on all the sex talk in politics- I don't give a rat's behind! It just keeps them from talking about the real issues.

Newt is a hypocritical pig. He is a rich jerk, that has probably never even known someone who has struggled. He lacks empathy, and therefore will never be a good, effective leader. He IS intelligent in thought, but it will never make up for what he lacks. I'd throw rotten eggs at the man if I could!!

I REALLY dislike Obama's policies, but if the Republicans can't find someone besides the clowns they've been finding under rocks or in pond scum, guess who's getting my vote! I am a very conservative person, but a leader has to be likable and has to have some give and take.

No one is without faults, so unless it broke the laws, lets let our politicians keep their skeltons in the closets, their private lives private, and stop scaring good people from running for office. It's the people who are embaressed and ashamed about past mistakes that we want in office, but as it stands, they will never run!
