No X-rays Before Getting Period

So I have been getting lower back pain lately that sometimes radiates up my back giving it a burning/tingling sensation. I saw a doctor and she gave me a referral to go have an X-ray done. She never mentioned this to me, but when I got there, the technician asked me when I had my last period. I told her, not thinking anything of it. She then stated that I wasn't in the 'safe zone' and that I needed to come back once I get my period (within 10 days) to prove I am not pregnant.

Here's the thing, they don't take pregnancy tests there so basicallyit's my word if I tell them I just got my period or just finished it, they will give me my X-ray.
Honestly, how do they know i'm not pregnant just by me saying I got my period?
There are many women out there who bleed during their pregnancy so they don't realize they are pregnant.
How do you ladies feel about this? Do you agree or disagree?

Leah, I didn't make a big deal about it. I had not even thought about. I was kind of surprised because of the past I was not expected to hear this. The thing is I don't know if I am 100% not pregnant. My guess is no because I have been getting my period (or at least I believe I have been). But my guess is as good as anybody elses. They didn't even ask if I was on any form of birth control, but I really don't think it would have mattered as I know someone who got pregnant on the pill and another on the Depo shot.

Heather, when I say stupid women I am talking of women who swear they cannot be pregnant but do not use any contraception or who are having pregnancy symptoms but choose to ignore them because there is no possibility they could be pregnant, then they find out oops they are pregnant. There is only NO risk of you being pregnant if you abstain from sex and sexual contact otherwise there is always a risk, a tiny one if you are using contraception properly but there IS a risk of pregnancy.

Not realising you are pregnant due to no pregnancy symptoms does not make you stupid, ignoring symptoms does!

Yup I know. I just don't understand why they wouldn't just give a pregnancy test there.

I needed x-rays at the hospital and they asked if I was pregnant. I said I didn't know, so they gave me a pregnancy test just to make sure. I can't believe medical professionals would be so careless (not to say that you would lie!).

I say I am not sure 100% if I am or not. Yes I can say no i'm not pregnant, but look at all the women out there who have gotten pregnant while using protection or who have thought they have been getting their period for the past 5 months, but really it was just bleeding from the pregnancy.

Hmm, well your alot calmer than I am lmao. I guess if your not 100% sure your not pregnant, then not worth it to take the risk but if you know for a fact that your not, I hope that you can insist they give you the xray, especially if your not sexually active.

Seriously? Never heard of that before. So you went all the way there to get an xray and they turned you away because you were due for your period?? Its like they're not taking your word for it. I think I would freak out if they said it to me, I didn't put my entire day on hold to come to an appt to be turned away. If you know that your not pregnant b/c a) your not sexually active or b) using contraceptives, you should have been able to insist. And what if your on the depo shot and don't get your periods or one of those fancy birth control pills where you don't get a period for months. Wonder what they would do then....

i guess i have always been in the safe zone..i used ot work in radiology and i never heard of that, and i was the MA who took the people back, got their history, triaged them, mixed the barium for their x-rays etc....They give you a shield routinely anywho..the heavy lead apron they lay on you...yeah that...It's not up to the people in radiology to give you a pregnancy test, so they are not going to..lol...and you are correct, someone can tell them anything and there is no way to check it out...

Heather, I know what you mean. There are so many women out there who don't know they are pregnant until 4-6 months into the pregnancy because they don't have any symptoms. I know of a few personally. Have you ever seen or heard of the tv show, 'I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant?'

Elizabeth, this is why I am debating going out myself and getting an HPT because even though I don't feel pregnant and I know we use protection, there are women who get pregnant even using protection. For all I know the uncomfortable pain I am having could be a sign of pregnancy.

That's dumb. If they want to know whether or not you're pregnant they need to give pregnancy tests. Whether or not someone just had a period doesn't mean their not pregnant. Some women don't even know they are pregnant because of regular bleeding.

It wouldn't bother me because I would rather wait and be sure I wasn't pregnant than have a X-ray while I am pregnant because of the risk to the baby. As others have said they are just covering their backs which is understandable as their are too many stupid women out there.

I went into the ER with severe abdominal pain (seriously, labor was a cake walk in comparison) and they wouldn't give me an x-ray because I wasn't in the safe zone either. Thank God they took precautions! An ultrasound tech came to make sure I wasn't having any internal bleeding and there was my baby girl!!! (Well, actually two, but they were so small we only saw one!)
They have to cover their own asses, think of all the stupid women out there who have gotten x-rays either knowing they were or could be pregnant and screwed up their babies...at least this way they aren't responsible for any of that...if you lie and are pregnant...then it's all on you and they can't be held accountable. It's a crazy messed up world and no one can trust anyone anymore to not sue them!

I had x-rays done for back pain and when they asked if I could be pregnant I said no...I didn't think I was...they did the x-rays and I found out a week later I WAS pregnant. Fortunately, no side effects to baby...unless having a monster attitude is a side effect!! ;)

I think they're just trying to be safe. And if you broke your leg, no, they aren't gonna make you wait until you get your period. That would be considered an emergency. I've been denied xrays before because of my period (or lack of it) and it never bothered me.

Overall the whole thing doesn't really bother me. They want to protect themselves. Although, I had an X-ray done about 5 years ago and I was never asked then. Unless they recently changed the policy. The thing that does bother me is, what if I bleed around the time of my period (I think it is my period), I go get the X-ray done, and then find out i'm pregnant? I am beginning to think that maybe I should go out and buy a test just in case. But then there are tests that come out negative. The whole thing is a little crazy if you ask me. Now i'm starting to get paranoid.

Eh, I get that they're trying to be safe. It wouldn't bother me, I suppose.

That seems kind of stupid.. So if you break your leg, but are due for your period in 2 days, they make you wait? Just do a urine test!

They are probably just being careful in case you are pregnant and sue them in case an x-ray damages the baby.

They gave me a pregnancy test (pee test) before I got x-rays. They waited on the results before they would send me up there.

I think it's stupid, to be perfectly honest with you. I don't see why they couldn't just send you with a referral to the lab and get a quick test done.

*EDITED TO ADD: I don't agree with the whole lying thing b/c if you WERE pregnant and the x-ray affected your baby somehow, you would feel guilty about it. Just take the stupid test*

[deleted account]

I think this is completely ridiculous. There is no "safe" zone... You can be pregnant and bleeding... and not be pregnant and not bleeding... It's a ridiculous rule and if you know you are not pregnant just lie to them. I would anyway ;)

[deleted account]

When I had to have X-rays done when I was at school I was asked if there was any chance I could be pregnant AKA had I had unprotected sex...I wasn't sexually active anyways and even if I was I wouldn't have been stupiud enough not to use protection.

I think it's ridiculous just going by when your last period was really, but then again everything is so different in the US than here in the UK.

As for the fact you could be lying, at the end of the day it would be you putting your baby at risk if you were pregnant and knew.

i think that's stupid. they always have asked if i think there is a chance that i am pregnant, and i say yes or no, and then proceed from there.
i think it's kindof stupid honestly, like you said you could just lie!! i understand that srays are harmful to a fetus, but it's a bit overkill if you ask me.
